Today we are exploring Chiang Mai, the largest and most visited city in Northern Thailand. It’s also Thailand’s most cultural city. People come to explore its temples, food, markets and its fun-loving culture. Chiang Mai means “new city,” it got its name when the Kingdom of Lana moved its capital from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai in the year 1296. Now come with me as we explore the top 10 things to do in Chiang Mai!
First stop is Wat Chedi Temple in the old town. This temple has two parts, the new temple and the ruins of the old temple that date back to the 15th century. People believe that this is where the Emerald Buddha was first kept before moving to Bangkok. Its free to explore the grounds and it’s a must visit in the old town of Chiang Mai.
The one thing you have to do in Chiang Mai is get a foot massage. Head to Loi Khro Road, a street that is full of massage parlors. The best place to get a massage is at Young and Beautiful massage. A half hour foot massage costs 80 baht or $3. It’s definitely worth it!
Next up we head to Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar. It starts at sunset and ends at midnight, and is open every night of the year. Its 1 km in length, you can do some shopping, eat some food and enjoy one of the main attractions of Chiang Mai.
Wat Phra That is a temple located on Doi Suthep mountain. It’s a 30-minute drive to the entrance of the temple, and from there you must climb 200+ steps to the top. The walk isn’t so bad because of all the vendors selling fruits, shakes, food and souvenirs. From the temple you get incredible views of Chiang Mai.
Another night market you have to visit is the Sunday Market. It is the biggest market in Chiang Mai and it receives over 100,000 visitors in high season. You can buy everything here, including decorative masks like I did.
Warorol Market is Chiang Mai’s biggest whole sale market. It is a huge complex full of vendors selling souvenirs, clothing and food. You need to try Chiang Mai’s pork sausage, the most famous dish in the city. It’s very spicy!!
Now we head to Tiger Kingdom, a Tiger sanctuary. These tigers are all born in captivity, they eat twice a day and are cared for by veterinarians.
Bo Sang Village is a small community that creates bamboo umbrellas. Visit the handicraft center to see how they create these beautiful umbrellas from start to finish. Afterwards you can do some shopping and don’t worry about paying for extra luggage on your flight, because they will ship the umbrellas anywhere in the world! I had four of them custom made and shipped to me in the U.S.
Lastly, we visit the Elephant Nature Park, an Elephant sanctuary located about a 45-minute drive north of Chiang Mai. They have 47 elephants that were rescued from the logging and trekking industry. Lek Chailert, is the found of the sanctuary. She started working with elephants in 1992, then in 1995 she started her first sanctuary. Her goal is to educate the world about the situation with the Asian elephants. There currently are no fences so the elephants can roam wild 24/7!
We hope you enjoyed our top 10 things to do in Chiang Mai! Please subscribe, give us a thumbs up and leave us a comment below!

1- Ayutthaya / Ayutthaya Historical Park
Founded in 1350, the city of Ayuthaya is located in the Chao Phraya River valley in Thailand. It sits on an island surrounded by three rivers connecting it to the Gulf of Siam. It is a fascinating historical park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ayutthaya was the second capital of Siam (Thailand) for 417 years from 1350 to 1767.
2- Bangkok’s Grand Palace
After the destruction of Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam was established along the Chao Praya River in Bangkok. The Grand Palace complex was built for the new capital; a 218,000-square-meter walled city comprised of royal residences, throne halls, government offices, Buddhist temples, and priceless works of art.
3- Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is about an hour and a half drive from Bangkok. Although it has become quite the tourist attraction, it is a completely functional marketplace with food, souvenirs, clothing, and fresh produce.
4- Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is known as the “Rose of the North.” Surrounded by the mountains of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a flourishing city often used as a base among both backpackers and tourists wishing to explore the lush landscapes, hill tribes and outdoor adventures of the region.
5- Elephant Nature Park
When in Chiang Mai, a day at the Elephant Nature Park is an exciting and unforgettable eco-tour for animal lovers. Elephant Nature Park is a rescue and rehabilitation center for abused, elderly, and injured Asian Elephants.
6- Tiger Kingdom
Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai provides the rare opportunity to come eye-to-eye with some of nature’s most impressive predators, tigers. Tiger Kingdom is a short half-hour drive from Chiang Mai’s city center to the town of Mae Rim.
The center allows guests to interact with tigers of all ages and sizes (from three months to adults).
7- Bo Sang Umbrella Village
Just a 30-minute drive east of Chiang Mai town is Bo Sang, a viilage that specializes in handmade bamboo parasols, or umbrellas. The “Umbrella Village,” as it is nicknamed, gives visitors the opportunity to see the entire process and purchase whatever designs they like.
8- Chiang Rai White Temple
Wat Rong Khun, or the “White Temple,” is a visually striking, ornate Buddhist temple located a 20-minute drive south of Chiang Rai.
Conceptualized and built by Thai artist, Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, the White Temple has become a highlight on many Thailand itineraries.
9- Long Neck Hill Tribe Villages
The hill tribe villages of Thailand are known for their colorful dress, handmade crafts, and unique customs. The hill tribes that live in the outskirts of Chiang Rai include the Akha, Lahu, Palong, Lu Mien Yao, and the Karen “Long Neck” people.
The women of the Karen Long Neck Tribe have the most striking appearance – many wear the brass coils wrapped around their necks. These coils can weigh up to 30 pounds!
10- Golden Triangle Park
The Golden Triangle Park is an area about 45 minutes north of Chiang Rai where the Mekong River separates Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
It is one of the most elaborate museums in the country and contains several exhibits, film clips, photographs, pipes, tools, and information. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.
11- Khao Yai National Park
At 300 square kilometers, Khao Yai National Park is the third largest national park in Thailand. It is also the country’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Khai Yai is a 2.5-hour drive from Bangkok. There are dozens of hotels and restaurants just outside the park along the main road.
Most visitors come for the day or long weekend to get a nice break from busy, noisy Bangkok.
12- Phuket Island
Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. It consists of the island of Phuket, the country's largest island, and another 32 smaller islands off its coast.
Phuket has an area of 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi), somewhat less than that of Singapore, and is the second-smallest province of Thailand.

10 Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai
10 Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai
Doi Suthep
Gleaming like a northern star from the heights of Doi Suthep (the regal mountain overlooking the city from the northwest) is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. It is one of the most historically and spiritually significant places in Thailand and is an impressive embodiment of the Lanna culture, with its origins dating back almost 700 years.
Chiang Mai Zoo
Covering 200 acres of land in the foothills of Doi Suthep and providing excellent views of the city in addition to fascinating wildlife exhibits, Chiang Mai Zoo is certainly worth a visit. Nearly 400 species of animal are kept here, including the two 'cultural ambassador' or pandas from China.
Chiang Mai Night Safari
Modeled after a similar attraction in Singapore, Chiang Mai Night Safari features three animal zones – Savanna Safari, Predator Prowl, Jaguar Trail – which you can tour via an open-sided tram or on foot. Enjoy a range of activities designed to keep you entertained throughout your visit, from hand-feeding wild animals and petting tiger cubs to a laser light show and ‘dancing’ fountain.
Wat Chedi Luang
Built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty, Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline. At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic.
Wiang Kum Kam the Underground Ancient City
Located in attractive countryside about five kilometres south of Chiang Mai along the Ping River, Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient city dating back to the eighth-century Haripunchai Kingdom. Expect to see many interesting items and structures such as stone tablets with Mon inscriptions, Buddhist sculptures and architecture, earthenware and pottery.
Mae Sa Elephant Camp
Having secured their names in the Guinness World Record, the elephants at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp are no ordinary beasts. Apart from going about their daily routine of bathing, eating, sleeping and just being domesticated elephants, these extremely intelligent animals have been trained to paint, play football, dance and perform a string of talent shows that will change the way you think about Thai elephants.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, rises 2,565 metres above sea level. Known as a sanctuary for a wide range of animal species and perhaps the best place in Thailand for bird-watching, the park has approximately 362 different species, many of which are not found anywhere else in Thailand. Doi Inthanon is a popular destination, not only for its natural beauty, but also for its historical significance.
Doi Pui Tribal Village and National Park
Doi Pui, at 1,685metres above sea level, is the highest peak in the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. It is famous for its beautiful waterfalls which are easily reached from the main road. But one of the hottest attractions for Doi Pui must be Hmong Tribal Village situated less than five kilometres from the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
Karen Long Neck Tribe & Chiang Dao Cave
At Chiang Dao cave, the caverns stretch many kilometres into the mountain yet only a small part of the complex is possible to explore. Two of the caves, Tham Phra Nawn and Tham Seua Dao, are illuminated by electric lights, but the upper caves are pitch-black and requires a local lantern-carrying guides to lead the way.
Bo Sang Handicraft Village
The handcrafting of umbrellas and parasols in Bo Sang Village is known throughout the country and even abroad – so much so that the umbrella has become one of the symbols of Chiang Mai. Here, you'll find plenty of hand-painted umbrellas, tiny cocktail umbrellas, large parasols for gardens or patios and other handmade products – all made from sa paper in various designs and at reasonable prices.
Chiang Mai Attractions - Bo Sang Umbrella Factory
The Bo Sang Village which is located just outside of Chiang Mai is renowned for its production of umbrellas and parasols. The Umbrella makers of Bo Sang have been practicing their craft for over two centuries. Bo Sang umbrellas are typically made with Saa paper (which itself is made from the bark of mulberry trees) although silk and cotton are also used.
