Top 10 Must Visit Places in the Greek Islands
Top 10 Must Visit Places in the Greek Islands (according to DK)
10. Temple of Aphaea, Aegina
Aphaia was a Greek goddess who was worshipped exclusively at this sanctuary. The extant temple of c. 500 BC was built over the remains of an earlier temple of c. 570 BC, which was destroyed by fire c. 510 BC. The elements of this destroyed temple were buried in the infill for the larger, flat terrace of the later temple, and are thus well preserved
9. Euboea
Evvia is one of Greece's biggest islands, but ever since it was connected to the Greek mainland by bridge, it has lost its island feeling, especially around the area of Chalkis, the capital. Do not expect to see the most picturesque places of the island before reaching the northern and southern tips, where you will definitely see much more from what it has to offer.
8. Palace of Knossos, Crete
Knossos is the site of the most important and best known Minoan palace complex in Crete. It is located some 5 km south of Heraklion. According to tradition, Knossos was the seat of the legendary Cretan king Minos. The Palace is also connected with further legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, as well as the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. Excavation has revealed that the site was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period (7000-3000 B.C.) until Roman times.
7. Phaistos Palace, Crete
Phaistos currently refers to a Bronze Age archaeological site at modern Phaistos, a municipality in south central Crete. Ancient Phaistos was located about 5.6 km east of the Mediterranean Sea. The name, Phaistos, survives from ancient Greek references to a city in Crete of that name, shown to be, in fact, at or near the current ruins.
6. Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos
In ancient times Samos was a particularly rich and powerful city-state. It is home to Pythagoreion and the Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Eupalinian aqueduct, a marvel of ancient engineering. Samos is the birthplace of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, after whom the Pythagorean theorem is named.
5. Delos
Delos was the most important Panhellenic sanctuary, and, according to mythology, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The first signs of habitation on the island date from the 3rd millennium B.C., and important remains of the Mycenaean period have been uncovered in the area of the sanctuary. In the 7th century B.C. Delos was already a known Ionic centre because of its religious importance as the birthplace of Apollo.
4. Nea Moni of Chios
Nea Moni is an 11th-century monastery on the island of Chios that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located on the Provateio Oros Mt. in the island's interior, about 15 km from Chios town. It is well known for its mosaics, which, together with those at Daphni and Hosios Loukas, are among the finest examples of Macedonian Renaissance art in Greece.
3. Monastery of St John, Patmos
The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in 1088 in Chora on the island of Patmos. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. It is built on a spot venerated by both Catholics and Eastern Orthodox as the cave where St. John of Patmos had visions.
2. Rhodes Old Town
Rhodes is the largest settlement and capital city of the island of the same name. It is famous as the former site of the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. 6000 people live and work in the same buildings the Knights of St. John lived in 6 centuries ago.
1. Corfu Old Town
Corfu, known also as Kerkyra, is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands in Greece. Located off of the far northwest coast of the country, Corfu lies in the Adriatic sea, east of Italy and southwest of Albania. Historically Corfu has been controlled by many foreign powers, notably the Venetians, and British.

Sparta - Greece HD Travel Channel
The region of Sparta has been inhabited already for 4000 years. King Otto of Greece founded modern Sparta in 1836. He was the first Greek king after independence. It is impossible to miss the monument of Leonidas, whom we will meet again at the Thermopylae. His heroic fight represents the military strength of ancient Sparta.
Sparta was the only Greek Polis that had no defensive walls until the Hellenistic period, as the city's troops were strong enough to fend off an attack.
Nearby a monument commemorates all the great Greek Olympic champions since the beginning of the Games.
On the former Acropolis, we see only a few remains of the ancient city like the ruins of a Stoa and a theater from the Roman Empire.
Sparta always polarized the people. Here one trained the young men to unconditional fight. On the other hand, one can find the first state order with separation of powers here; the great Rhetra, a document on Greek constitutional history that institutionalized political processes.
The Acropolis offers a beautiful view of the Byzantine fortified city of Mystras. The construction of Mystras led to the desolation of ancient Sparta.

Die Region um Sparta ist bereits seit 4000 Jahren besiedelt. 1836 gründete König Otto I. das moderne Sparta.

Visit Troy | Ancient city, Turkey - Tourism & Vacations in Troy, Ancient, Turkey
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Troy is a city well-known to both history and legend (as well as archaeology), and was situated in northwest Anatolia in what is now Turkey (but which was known in Classical sources as Asia Minor), located south of the southwest end of the Dardanelles/Hellespont and northwest of Mount Ida at Hisaronu. It is best known for being the setting of the Trojan War described in the Greek Epic Cycle and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer. Metrical evidence from the Iliad and the Odyssey seems to show that the name Ἴλιον (Ilion) formerly began with a digamma: Ϝίλιον (Wilion). This was later supported by the Hittite form Wilusa.
A new capital called Ilium[note 2] was founded on the site in the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It flourished until the establishment of Constantinople and declined gradually during the Byzantine era.
In 1865, English archaeologist Frank Calvert excavated trial trenches in a field he had bought from a local farmer at Hisarlık, and in 1868, Heinrich Schliemann, a wealthy German businessman and archaeologist, also began excavating in the area after a chance meeting with Calvert in Çanakkale.[3][4] These excavations revealed several cities built in succession. Schliemann was at first skeptical about the identification of Hisarlik with Troy, but was persuaded by Calvert[5] and took over Calvert's excavations on the eastern half of the Hisarlik site, which was on Calvert's property. Troy VII has been identified with the Hittite city Wilusa, the probable origin of the Greek Ἴλιον, and is generally (but not conclusively) identified with Homeric Troy.
Today, the hill at Hisarlik has given its name to a small village near the ruins, supporting the tourist trade visiting the Troia archaeological site.[6] It lies within the province of Çanakkale, some 30 km south-west of the provincial capital, also called Çanakkale. The nearest village is Tevfikiye. The map here shows the adapted Scamander estuary with Ilium a little way inland across the Homeric plain.
Troia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998.
Visit Greece - Appreciate Ancient Greek History
PLEASE VOTE:
Here I am at The Palace of Knossos in Crete sharing my gratitude for Ancient Greek history that I had learned during my stay in Greece in August of 2012. It's so crazy learning something in a text book and then visiting it before your eyes and trying to imagine how it was thousands of years ago. Coming to the ancient ruins really made me appreciate ancient civilizations. Please Visit Greece and appreciate the ancient history whether they are Minoan, Athenian, Macedonian, Spartan or whichever area! There is soooo much!

GREECE: EXPLORING the historic MEDIEVAL CASTLE, island of CHIOS (ΧΙΟΣ)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the historic Castle of Chios which is a medieval citadel in Chios town on the Greek island of Chios (ΧΙΟΣ). The castle is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea. It consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.
The castle was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.
