Part One: Amazing Princes Islands Istanbul Tour | Büyükada | Travel Vlog
Join with me to the amazing Princes Island Istanbul Tour, to the biggest of the Islands, Büyükada.
The Princes’ Islands (Adalar) are nine small islands in the Sea of Marmara, near to Istanbul mainland. Four of the islands are big and can be visited. The names of this islands are Büyükada, Kınalıada, Heybeliada and Burgazada.
I took the public ferry from Bostancı (Asia Side) to reach Büyükada, the biggest of the Princes' Islands. Of course, you can also take the ferry at the European Side, from Kabataş or Sirkeci, direct to the Princes Islands. My ferry stopped briefly on Heybeliada Island to unload some passengers before it moved on to Büyükada.
Büyükada Island (5.46 5,46 km²) is the biggest of the Princes’ Islands (ADALAR) in the Sea of Marmara, near to Istanbul. It was known as Prinkipos (Greek:Prince). In Byzantine times princes were exiled blinded, to remove them from the political scene. Nowadays people come voluntarily. Often there are large crowds of townspeople and tourists, especially weekends. To avoid the crowds i arrived approximately at 4:30 pm. The last tourists were already leaving the island.
Main transport in Büyükada are horse carriages. On the board of the horse carriage station are fixed prices for the rides, depending on where you want to go. You can also make a short or a long Island Tour with the horse carriage. (Turkish: Küçük Tur and Büyük Tur)
The conditions in which these horses on the island are living is criticised by animal welfare groups. Many locals refuse using horse carriages. As an alternative you can explore the island by renting a bicycle or walking.
On the seaside promenade are see few seaside fish restaurants (seafood) with a impressive view of the Marmara Sea and Istanbul. You have in Büyükada a selection of restaurants with different price categories. Some shops, coffees and bars are also available. And during the Summer people can enjoy the beaches of Büyükada.

PRINCES ISLANDS NEAR ISTANBUL - QUICK TOUR
During my recent visit to Istanbul i made a day trip to the Princes Islands. The ferry was just over an hour ($3) and the largest island of the four accessible islands was really quiet with a beautiful walk and scenic views.

My Amazing Journey of Buyukada (Big Island)
My Amazing Journey of Buyukada (Big Island) is a short video about Princes' Islands which is an archipelago of nine car-free islands and a popular getaway from the city. Büyükada (meaning Big Island in Turkish) is the largest of the nine so-called Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, near Istanbul, with an area of about 2 square miles (5 km2). The population of the island today is about 7,000 people. As on the other eight islands, motorized vehicles – except service vehicles – are forbidden, so visitors explore the island by foot, bicycle or in horse-drawn phaeton carriages which function like taxi cabs, also offering round-the-island sightseeing tours. Buyukada has many historic churches, monasteries, and mansions that tourists can visit. You can also feed the birds not knowing soon you will be surrounded by a gang of cats.

Prince Islands (Adalar) - Istanbul, Turkey top attractions | Guide
The Princes’ Islands (Kızıl Adalar or just Adalar) are a chain of nine rather small islands in the Sea of Marmara. They evolved from a place of exile during the Byzantine era, to a popular destination for tourists and Istanbulites alike. Of those nine islands, only four of them are open to the public: Büyükada, the biggest and most popular, Burgazada, Heybeliada and Kınalıada.
The main feature of any of the Princes’ Islands is the sound of silence. All motorized vehicles are banned, making the islands an oasis of peace and quiet. Horse-drawn carriages and bicycles are the main transportation means on the islands.
You’ll find yourself walking or riding through narrow streets flanked by either untouched pine-forests or fine, wooden Victorian cottages. During the Byzantine period, princes and other royalty were exiled on the islands, and later members of the Ottoman sultans family were exiled there too, giving the islands their present name. During the nineteenth century, the islands became a popular resort for Istanbul's wealthy, and Victorian-era cottages and houses are still preserved on the largest of the Princes' Islands.
The Halki seminary, formally the Theological School of Halki (Greek: Θεολογική Σχολή Χάλκης), was founded on 1 October 1844 on the island of Halki.
In 1912 on the islands lived 10 250 Greeks and 670 Turks.
During the summer months, the Princes' Islands are popular destinations for day trips from Istanbul. As there is almost no motor traffic on the Islands, the only transport being bicycles and horse and cart, they are more peaceful than the city of Istanbul. They are just a short ferry ride from Istanbul, with ferries departing from Bostancı, Kartal and Maltepe on the Asian side, and from Kabataş on the European side. Most ferries call in turn at the four largest of the nine islands: Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada and, finally, Büyükada. Ferry and ship services are provided by six different companies.
In spring and autumn, the islands are quieter and more pleasant, although the sea can be rough in spring, autumn and winter, and the islands are sometimes cut off from the outside world when the ferry services are cancelled due to storms and high waves. During winter, with the addition of the biting cold and the strong winds and the resulting ferry cancellations, the islands become almost deserted. As for cultural tourism, Büyükada happens to have the first and only city museum in İstanbul, the Museum of the Princes' Islands in Aya Nikola Bay.
Büyükada (meaning Big Island; Greek: Πρίγκηπος, romanized: Prínkēpos) is the largest of the nine islands comprising the Princes' Islands in the Marmara Sea, close to Istanbul.
As on the other islands, motorized vehicles – except service vehicles – are forbidden, so visitors explore the island by foot; by riding a bicycle (numerous bicycle shops rent them with hourly prices); or in horse-drawn phaeton carriages which function like taxi cabs, also offering round-the-island sightseeing tours.
A convent on Büyükada was the place of exile for the Byzantine empresses Irene, Euphrosyne, Theophano, Zoe and Anna Dalassena. After his deportation from the Soviet Union in February 1929, Leon Trotsky also stayed for four years on Büyükada, his first station in exile. Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid was born on the island.
Heybeliada (meaning Saddlebag Island; Greek: Χάλκη, romanized: Chalkē, also rendered Halki) is the second largest of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara. It is a neighbourhood in the Adalar district of Istanbul. The large Naval Cadet School overlooks the jetty to the left as you get off the ferry. There are two interesting pieces of architecture on the grounds of the school. One is Kamariotissa, the only remaining Byzantine church on the island, and more importantly the last church to be built before the conquest of Constantinople. The other is the grave of the second English Ambassador to be sent to Constantinople by Elizabeth I of England, Edward Barton, who chose to live on Heybeli to escape the bustle of the city.

Coveted by empires across the centuries, straddling both Europe and Asia, Istanbul is one of the world's great metropolises. Founded around 1000 BC, the colony of Byzantium grew into the Byzantine Empire's great capital of Constantinople and after the Ottoman conquest of the city, retained its glorious place as the heart of their empire. The city (officially renamed Istanbul after the founding of the Turkish Republic) is liberally scattered with glorious remnants of its long and illustrious history, and the sightseeing here will impress even the most monument-weary visitor.
