Exploring Calakmul, Mexico's hidden Maya city
Visit:
Think Maya ruins in Mexico and you probably go straight to world-famous Chichen Itza or Teotihuacán, Tulum or Palenque. Don't get us wrong – these magnificent places are all worth a visit when in Mexico. But if you’re after something different (and equally amazing), if you prefer less-to-no crowds and more adventure, allow us to introduce you to the hidden ruins of Calakmul. If you haven’t heard of them there’s a good reason: this World Heritage-listed Maya site is set deep into the tropical jungles of Campeche state, hours drive from the busy traveller hubs of Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Merida (not even Google Maps knows how to get there!). But if you ask us, that’s exactly what makes it so special. This more than 2,000-year-old city was once home to 50,000 Mayans; now there are almost 7,000 remaining structures scattered throughout the enormous site, including one of the biggest and oldest Maya pyramids ever (which, unlike the ruins at Chichen Itza, you can actually climb). Plus – the site is located in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, so you’ll have the chance to see monkeys, toucans, even rare jaguars in the surrounding jungle…all while running into few other tourists. You can see why we’re excited to introduce Calakmul as a new Intrepid destination. Be one of the first to experience it (with a local guide, of course) on our 8-day Yucatan Peninsula Adventure:
At Intrepid, we offer more than just small group trips. Our travellers choose to see the world in a way that builds human connection, supports local communities, respects the environment and draws us all a bit closer together. As the world's leading operator of sustainable, ethical travel experiences, Intrepid puts responsible travel at the core of our entire business. And with more than 1,000 itineraries in over 120 countries, there’s an adventure for everyone.

The Most Colourful City in Mexico: Campeche
Campeche is a city full of colourful buildings and colonial charm. We had a great time exploring the old town, walking along the fortified walls and eating lunch at a great local spot in town. It gets pretty hot in Campeche but luckily our Airbnb had a nice pool to cool off in!

Discover the 10 best things to do in Cancun on vacation during this brief informational video.
This city on the east coast of Mexico is one of the top destinations for vacationers in the Caribbean region.
It is well-known for the many hotels that line the strip of land that surrounds Nichupte Lagoon, the many restaurants and shopping opportunities, and the convenient location that makes it easy to reach for U.S. citizens in particular.
Although Cancun has its share of standard vacation activities, such as ocean swimming and other water sports, it also has unique attractions and excursions that make a trip there more interesting for adults and kids alike.
Possibly the most famous unique attraction is the extensive Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, which is located about two hours by bus from Cancun.
This day trip will allow visitors to see massive stone structures including the Temple of Kukulkan, a step pyramid that dominates the city; the El Caracol observatory; the Temple of Warriors; and the Great Ball Court.
Vacationers who don't want to make a day trip to see Chichen Itza can visit other Mayan ruins located near Cancun. Some of these sites include Uxmal, Tulum, Calakmul and Palenque.
Besides Mayan ruins, eco-tourism excursions are popular. Xcaret, also the site of Mayan ruins, has a snorkeling lagoon and the opportunity for visitors to float through an underground river.
Xel-Ha is a water theme park and open-sea aquarium. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is an education and ecotourism center.
One of the most popular things to do in Cancun is a visit to Isla Mujeres, a nearby island accessible by boat. Visitors can go to Dolphin Discovery to swim with the dolphins, see a turtle sanctuary, tour Garrafon National Park or take advantage of places to snorkel.
But people who would rather stay in Cancun proper and enjoy 21st century fun can go to the Parque Nizuc waterpark, the bullfighting ring at The Plaza de Toros or on a unique boat ride called The Rocket.
Cancun also is known for its nightlife, which becomes especially active during college spring break. It's during that time that visits to Cancun spike and the area becomes packed with students.

5 Must Do Adventures in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, world-famous destinations attracting millions of visitors each year with their picture-perfect beaches and high-class resorts. But since we came to Mexico for it’s nature and culture, we were looking for adventures off-the-beaten-path in Yucatan. Today, we’d like to share our top 5 experiences with you.
01:09 Punta Laguna – head into the jungle with a local, Mayan guide, observe spider monkeys in the wild, kayak and zipline over a lively lagoon, spot some caimans and let them lower you into a hidden underground cenote.
02:43 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve – known for it’s natural beauty and sustainable tourism, the reserve contains a beautiful stretch of beach with a off-shore coral reef and lively mangroves where you can spot birds, caymans and manatees.
03:18 Bacalar – not a big secret anymore, but the „Lagoon of Seven Colors“ with crystal clear water in all shades of blue is still worth a visit. Rent a kayak and paddle out to the „Canal de los Piratas“
03:40 Calakmul – one of the largest and most powerful ancient Maya ruins, nestled in the middle of a lush rain forest. Find yourself surrounded by wild animals while hiking through the widespread historical site and climb the highest structures for a spectacular view04:47 Ek Balam – a great alternative to Calakmul is Ek Balam, a Mayan site much more accessible and still less visited than most other ruins in the area
04:56 Cenotes – the natural highlight of the Pensinsula are around 3.000 sinkholes filled with fresh water. They’re an important habitat for plants and animals, considered as the entrance of the Mayan underworld and a perfect place to explore above and below the water surface. Find cliff jumps, rope swings (San Lorenzo Oxman Cenote) and spectacular places for snorkeling and scuba diving (Casa, Carwash, Dos Ojos, …).
If you’re interested in scuba diving the Cenotes or with the bull sharks living close to Playa del Carmen’s coast, check out our previous videos!
