West Point Island lies off the northwest corner of West Falkland. It is a working sheep farm but home to numerous species of plants, birds and marine mammals. The main destination for visitors to this island is Devil’s Nose – a rocky promontory with over 2,000 pairs of black-browed albatross and about 500 pairs of rockhopper penguins. Spectacular cliffs are a feature of the coastline. As well as the rich wildlife, the picturesque settlement and small harbour often teeming with dolphins make this island well worth a visit.

Things to Do in the Falkland Islands: West Point Island Trip

Lying an hour offshore from Carcass Island is the smaller island of West Point. Inhabited by only four people this remote spot is a also inhabited by a massive colony of Black Browed Albatross that make use of the spectacular cliffs as their breeding ground.
There is also a large colony of Rockhopper penguins and a large population of Striated Caracaras (known locally as Johnny Rock) which, given half the chance, will pinch anything you may leave lying around!
The journey from Carcass, on board Condor (an ex-German Fishing Boat that is perfectly suited to the conditions being comfortable and very safe although not what can be described as luxurious) with her captain Mike, one of the four occupants of the Island takes around one hour over seas that can be a little rough at times as you need to cross several cross-currents.
The journey over is spectacular and there are often sightings of Peale's Dolphins, Sea Lions, occasional whales (although these are a little rare in this stretch of water) and countless sea birds, including penguins in the water.
On arrival you have the chance to walk up to the Albatross Colony (although Mike will drive you if you prefer) where you are able to watch these magnificent birds use the wind that rise up the cliffs as they swoop and come into land next to their hungry chicks.
This trip really deserves time and is often frequented by cruise ships in the region, we will, wherever possible arrange this on a day when you can be in as small a group as possible to enjoy the wildlife in peace.

Shane Reynolds (aka Shane O ) started tinkering with video in the early 90's on his local high school morning show, and carried it on to a degree at the University of Florida in 1998. After cutting his teeth professionally in Nashville, Shane started Color Earth in 2002. Today, he continues to produce for the biggest names in the business in the most adventurous destinations around the world.
Whether he's in front of the camera or behind it, Shane O’s musical background, adventurous spirit, and laid-back humor are the not-so-secret ingredients in his unique hosting, shooting and editing style. As a part of the team or a one-man-band producer, Shane O's creativity and adaptability have made him a force to be reckoned with in the world of TV and video production.

Brazil 2015 Part 5
Part 5 starts back on the Rio Cuiaba where we see white-rumped sandpiper, great black hawk, white-throated piping-guan, common iguana, little cuckoo, a male jaguar resting, then a female jaguar hunting along the river bank.
Back at the hotel we have toco toucan, black-tailed tityra, southern crested caracara, rufous hornero, thrush-like wren, greater thornbird, yellow-rumped cacique, double-collared seedeater, lined seedeater, saffron finch, short-crested flycatcher, baywing, hyacinth macaw, Brazilian porcupine and white woodpecker.
We then take an evening boat trip to the Rio Negrinio where we see black-collared hawk, helmeted manakin, white-wedged piculet, boat-billed heron, Lafresnaye's (buff-throated) woodcreeper, white-throated piping-guan and lots of roosting cattle egrets.
Next morning we start at the hotel and see grey-breasted martin, southern screamers, wattled jacanas, fawn-breasted wren, picui doves, greenish elaenia, grey-crested cachalote, chaco chachalaca and a butterfly. Back on thr Transpantaneira heading north, we get a better view of fawn-breasted wren, limpkins, great horned owl, white-headed marsh tyrant, marsh deer, great black hawk, an ocelot crossing the road and a happy pig.
Before dawn next day we see a crab-eating fox with a pup, a giant anteater, savanna hawk, buff-necked ibis, ruddy ground-dove, plumbeous ibis with wattled jacana, great white egret, guira cuckoo and finally ending as part 1 started with a southern lapwing.

To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 2,200 fishes, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. One in five of all the bird species in the world live in the rainforests of the Amazon, and one in five of the fish species live in Amazonian rivers and streams. Scientists have described between 96,660 and 128,843 invertebrate species in Brazil alone.
The biodiversity of plant species is the highest on Earth with some experts estimating that one square kilometer (247 acres) may contain more than a thousand types of trees and thousands of species of other higher plants. According to a 2001 study, a quarter square kilometer (62 acres) of Ecuadorian rainforest supports more than 1,100 tree species.
One square kilometer (247 acres) of Amazon rainforest can contain about 90,790 tonnes of living plants. The average plant biomass is estimated at 356 ± 47 tonnes per hectare. To date, an estimated 438,000 species of plants of economic and social interest have been registered in the region with many more remaining to be discovered or catalogued.
Cable car Benalmadena. Amazing view and birds of prey
The Telecabina takes you on an amazing 15-minute journey in a four-person cable car right up to the highest point on the Málaga coast at an altitude of almost 800m above sea level. From this superb vantage point, you not only have the most magnificent views of the Costa del Sol, but also the awesome panoramic vistas of the Sierra Nevada mountains (white with snow in the winter months), the Guadalhorce Valley and on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the coast of Africa.
You can also see a demonstration on how the birds of prey live alongside humans and watch the speed and feeding habits of a peregrine falcon or the majestic flight of the eagle. So successful is the bird of prey sanctuary on the Calamorro Mountaintop that four rare Royal Owl chicks were successfully bred there recently, news that hit the local papers. There are more than sixty birds of different species, including vultures, royal eagles, peregrine falcons and white-headed vultures as well as the Royal Owls. All of this makes the cable car ride exciting, educational and enjoyable for the whole family.

Napo Wildlife Center - Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador
My trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon back in 2009. We stayed at the beautiful Napo Wildlife Center. Highly recommended! The food there is as fabulous as my camera work is shoddy. Sorry about that.
