There are lots of luxury resorts in Nicaragua's beach destinations but few in locations that are unique to Nicaragua, namely its lakes and volcanoes. Pacaya Lodge is the first and only five-star resort at Laguna de Apoyo (Lake Apoyo), a volcanic crater lake wedged between Masaya and Granada. It's new, so new that we were among the first guests having visited only two weeks after it opened, and holds a truly beautiful spot.

Active volcano in Guatemala, Volcano boarding in Nicaragua, now a lake INSIDE a volcano, here in Nicaragua, just outside of the beautiful town of Granada. This lake or lagoon (laguna) is outside of Granada by, what should be, a short bus ride, however with the difficulties in latin america, it took longer than expected.
Laguna de Apoyo has to be one of the most gorgeous places you are going to see, anywhere. Nicaragua has the blessing of having ownership of this incredible place. Many people think it is laguna de pollo, meaning chicken lagoon, which is hilarious. Also known as lagoon apoyo, lagoon de apoyo, or lake apoyo, this is a 100 percent must visit when you are in Nicaragua, and even more so, when you are near Granada.
Last couples days in Granada have been something else. Coming from the town of Leon in north Nicaragua, through Managua, the contrast between the three is evident. Leon, is very colonial, in a dirty, grungey but REAL sort of way, Managua is, in my eyes, simply a capital city but Granada, different that the others, is a slow, pristine, colonial town that wow's you from the get go.
From my arrival in Granada, I have been impressed. In fact, I jumped out of the bus, as I arrived in Granada, many stops before I should have, simply because I was awe struck by a cathedral I wanted to view.

However, onwards and upwards. Well, in this case, south actually. Down to the town of Rivas, through the small alley way of land that separates Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean, where we get to Isla Ometepe, another exciting stop on my trip through Nicaragua.
Have had an amazing time here at Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua in general, and I don't plan for it to stop.
