High ridges of Reiek in Mizoram - Bangladesh can be seen in distance from Reiek hilltop
Reiek Tlang is one of the hills located just outside Aizawl (about 12 kms away) and is a popular destination for adventure seekers. The views surrounding the hill are breathtaking and makes the visit worthwhile. There is a heritage village set up by the tourism department in Reiek, that gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of Mizo villagers. The tourism department also organizes Anthurium festival every year to showcase the lovely anthuriums that are grown in the surrounding and also to introduce the culture and arts of Mizoram to visitors.
Reiek with an elevation of 1548 metres, overlooks Aizawl and offers view of the surrounding valleys and hills, on a clear day the plains of Bangladesh can be seen from the top of the hill. Reiek Hill is surrounded by thick lush green temperate trees and bushes along the high ridges of Reiek in Mizoram.
The folded structure of the Mizoram ranges are at the junction of two moving tectonic plates (Indian and Burmese Desi Kachar 1974). On 19 April 2011 there was a 4.3 earthquake about 10 km North of Kolasib and a 6.4 was recorded on 4 February 2011. Mizoram is in the highest zone 5 for earthquakes.
The folded hilly or mountainous North South belts, with perpendicular faults, comprise sediments of the Surma (Middle Bhuban Formation), Barail and Tipam groups. There is Aluvium in river beds consisting of deposits of argillaceous and arenaceous sandstones, shale, siltstones and mudstones and greywacke. A 560m thick rock succession of the Middle Bhuban type exposed between Bawngkawn and Durtlang shows 7 normal and 7 reverse magneto strata (North and South pole reversals) showing its age to be around 20 Million years old. The rock system is generally weak, unstable, weathered and prone to seismic and weather influence producing landslides. The soft, black to grey rock is used locally for building materials and for low trafficked road construction work. There are no useful minerals of economic significance apart from clays in the River Tlawng beds. Typical soils are sandy loam, clay loam that have been heavily leached due to the high slopes leaving it porous and lacking in minerals or humus.
A number of oil and gas exploration activities have taken place due the geological condition with which Mizoram has been formed, leading to the possibilities and high expectation that reserves would be confirmed. France, Russia and Cyprus as well as several Indian companies have already signed a 12% oil and 10% gas royalty arrangement with proceeds going direct to Mizoram state on any production (April 2009)

The Taj Mahal of Mizoram - KV Paradise
If Agra has the Taj Mahal as testimony to the immortal love of Emperor Shahjahan, Aizawl now has no less grand a monument ? the KV Paradise.
On the top of a hill in Durtlang, overlooking Aizawl, stands a grand edifice eternalising love ? a dream in marble that K. Chhawnthuama has built as a memorial to his wife.
The founder of KV Multipurpose School in Aizawl, Chhawnthuama still cannot forget the day when his wife Rosanpuii Varte, a popular teacher of the school, was killed in a car accident.
?The disaster of my life occurred on November 27, 2001. We were planning to go abroad. She was an enthusiastic traveller and prior to the tragedy, she had suggested we save money for the trip. We managed to save Rs 31 lakh for the purpose. But when she was gone, I found I had no use for the money. It was then that I decided to build a memorial in her name,? K. Chhawnthuama explained.
Lavish in its construction, Chhawnthuama spared no expense to create one of the most spectacular buildings in Mizoram. So much so that it is already being described as a sort of Mizo Taj Mahal. In Mizoram, never has the mortal remains of anyone been housed in greater grandeur. KV Paradise, as a tomb, has no peer.
?I think I have done everything for her. In life I gave her my heart, my love. After her life ended, I still wanted to give her the best,? said the bereaved 53-year-old.
KV Paradise was built at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The lighting alone costs Rs 6 lakh. The granite and marble flooring came all the way from Rajasthan, the specially designed tinted glasses (12 mm thick) were brought from Chennai and the spectacular fountain near the tomb was sourced from Calcutta. The three crosses on the tomb of his wife, said K. Chhawnthuama, epitomise the Holy Trinity.
