Palak Lake Mizoram
Palak Dil (Palak Lake)
Palak Dil or Palak Lake is the largest natural lake in Mizoram and is situated near Phura village which is about 391 kms to the south of Aizawl. Oval in shape, it covers about 1 square km and is surrounded by lush virgin forests rich in flora and fauna.
Two small mountain streams flow into the lake, and one streams flows out, ensuring a constant supply of fresh water. The forest around the lake is Tropical Wet Evergreen. Many of the nearby hills are covered by jhum (slash and burn cultivation), bamboo brakes as well as woody vegetation. An interesting feature of the forests surrounding the lake is the presence of low lying swamps which transform in to shallow lakes during the monsoon. The lake is surrounded by moderately steep hills. The area has Dipterocarp-dominated Tropical Evergreen Forest. The forests are rich in palms, rattans, dense cane-brakes and reeds along the lake margin

Mizoram is one of the states of Northeast India, with Aizawl as its capital. The name is derived from Mi (people), Zo (hill) and Ram (land), and thus Mizoram implies land of the hill people. In the northeast, it is the southern most landlocked state sharing borders with three of the seven sister states, namely Tripura, Assam, Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometer border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Like several other northeastern states of India, Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory. It became the 23rd state of India, a step above Union Territory, on 20 February 1987.
Mizoram's population is 1,091,014, according to 2011 census. It is the 2nd least populous state in the country. Mizoram covers an area of approximately 21,087 square kilometer. About 91% of the state is forested.
About 95% of current Mizoram population is of diverse tribal origins who settled in the state, mostly from southeast Asia, over waves of migration starting about 16th century but mainly in 18th century. This is the highest concentration of tribal people among all states of India, and they are currently protected under Indian constitution as Scheduled Tribe. The tribes converted from Animist religions to Christianity over the first half of 20th century. Mizoram is one of three states of India with a Christian majority (87%). Its people belong to various denominations, mostly Presbyterian in its north and Baptists in south.

Swarupananda point - The place where Swami Swarupananda meditated
Swami Swarupananda was very particular about his studies and meditation. Though the Advaita Ashram itself was a very calm and secluded place, he would, nevertheless venture deep into the forest and there, in a tent, spend long hours in meditation. Even today the place where he meditated is known as Swarupananda point. It is a mute reminder to the great spiritual practices of the Swami.
One day when he came out of the tent, he saw a big tiger nearby. Hearing of this incident later, Mrs. Sevier prevailed upon the Swami not to go into the dense forest anymore. She immediately had a kutia (cottage) constructed near the Ashrama, and Swami Swarupananda went there instead whenever he wanted to be alone.

Phura- Mizoram- Journey Video to Palak Lake & Saphaw
Seated along rows of the north-south-running mountain ridges, isolated and pristine Mizoram sees few tourists, which makes the verdant, hilly countryside beyond the capital Aizawl a tempting target for off-the-beaten-track adventurers.
But once you reach here, it’s just the start, we travelled to the southernmost tip of the state to reach ‘Phura’, one of the remotest places in Mizoram.
This short video describes my journey to Palak Dil and Saphaw.
