Patagonia Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Travel to the land that time forgot and set out on the journey of a lifetime in Patagonia, where Mother Nature runs the show.
Patagonia, the fabled ‘edge of the world’, spans the southernmost regions of Chile and Argentina and can be rugged and desolate as well as breathtakingly beautiful and inviting.
This last frontier of South America is a colorful mosaic of snow-capped mountains, icebergs, volcanoes, glaciers, forests, lakes and vast steppe plains.
On the Argentinean side, the scenic Road of the 7 Lakes takes you from San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura and finally San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular ski resort on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi.
El Chaltén, in the southern Andes, is Argentina’s trekking capital. Trails lead to Laguna Capri, Fitz Roy Mountain and the fearsome Cerro Torre.
El Calafate is nestled the southern shores of Lago Argentino and is the gateway lake to Los Glaciares National Park. Here, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring glaciers awaits: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
In the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, take the 'End of the World Train’ to Tierra del Fuego National Park or get there by boat over the Beagle Channel. Photo opportunities along the way include Bird Island, Seal Island and the historic Les Éclaireurs lighthouse.
On the Chilean side of Patagonia, the regional capital Punta Arenas attracts visitors with its colonial architecture, cultural attractions and hospitality.
Tour the region’s Milodón Cave, where the remains of a giant ground-dwelling sloth and other huge extinct species were found.
Torres del Paine National Park is great for horse riding or hiking, with its steppes, snowcapped peaks, brimming lakes and Salto Grande waterfalls.
On the northern border of Chilean Patagonia, in the Los Lagos region, looms the mighty Osorno Volcano. The town of Puerto Varas, on the opposite shores of Lake Llanquihue, marks the end your Patagonia expedition.

Patagonia TOP 10 best places to visit
Patagonia is a region in South America, share by Chile and Argentina. In the Southern Andes you will find dramatic landscapes like deserts, pampas and grasslands (with guanaco). This region is located just north of Tierra del Fuego. The amazingly stunning Carretera Austral runs through this area and is a great roadtrip on your holiday. When you visit Patagonia, make sure you visit these highlights, as these are the best things to do in Patagonia:
1. Torres del Paine (Parque Nacional Torres del Paine)
The iconic of Patagonia: the three giant granite peaks are well worth the visit! Whether you want to do a day hike or the W circuit multi-day hike, this will be one of the highlights!
Cheapest stay: goo.gl/P64qgJ
Closet to track: goo.gl/6VeMBi
2. Cerro Fitz Roy ( El Chalten, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares)
Mount Fitz Roy is located on the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. It is among the most challenging mountains to climb, but the views from the bottom are also fabulous!
Great stay at this B&B: goo.gl/PVMBR8
3. Cavernas de Marmol (Puerto Rio Tranquilo)
This Marble cathedral is a natural wonder, consisting of formations of calcium carbonate. It is located on the shore of the General Lake Carrera and can only be reached by boat.
Explore the area from your own (discount) bungalow: goo.gl/Jv4WVs
4. Ventisquero Colgante (Parque Nacional Queulat)
Also called the hanging glacier, this stunning glacier is hanging above a cliff. You can either walk the short way to the lookout or be amazed by the glacier and the surroundings from a boat.
great accommodation: goo.gl/GpZNGc
5. Salto del Laja (Bio Bio region)
These waterfalls of the Laja river are spectacular in every sense. Where the river is calm upstream, downstream it gets more and more like a rapid as the waters rush through a deep and narrow canyon.
Nice and comfortable pace near the waterfalls: goo.gl/FXbkVs
6. Volcan Chaiten (Parque Nacional Pumalin)
This volcano is easily to be climbed for great views from the ever active volcano. The most recent eruption was in 2008!
For a complete stay: goo.gl/Kq2Ep7
7. Araucaria Araucana (Parque Nacional Nahuelbuta)
The Monkey Puzzle trees in the area near Temuco are dated to be 2000 years old. The many walking paths give you a great opportunity the view these impressive trees.
recommended stay: goo.gl/ruanWJ
8. Villarica Volcan (Parque Nacional Villarica)
Also known as Rucapihan, this is one of the most active volcanoes of Chile and is located in the Central Chilean Valley. The hike to the top is truly amazing, although it can be dangerous when there is too much snow.
Great views best value: goo.gl/rW75wK
9. Perito Moreno (El Calafate, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares)
This immense glacier is one of the few glaciers worldwide that are advancing. It is easy to go to the large viewing platform and see enormous pieces of ice collapse into the water.
Fabulous views and great Patagonian breackfast: goo.gl/EEECJC
10. Mirador Cuernos (Parque Nacional Torres del Paine)
The views on the Torres are truly beautiful from this side of the lake. There are plenty of walking tracks to several lookouts for the best views.

The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.
But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.
After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.
To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
- Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten
- Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi
- Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu
- Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo
- Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
- Exploradores Glacier, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
- Rio Baker, Cochrane
- Caleta Tortel
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Glacier

Torres del Paine National Park is a national park encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. The park is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales and 312 km (194 mi) north of Punta Arenas. The park borders Bernardo O'Higgins National Park to the west and the Los Glaciares National Park to the north in Argentine territory.
Torres del Paine National Park is part of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas del Estado de Chile (National System of Protected Forested Areas of Chile). In 2006, it measured approximately 242,242 hectares. It is one of the largest and most visited parks in Chile. The park averages around 150,000 visitors a year, of which 60% are foreign tourists,[4] who come from all over the world.
The park is one of the 11 protected areas of the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica (together with four national parks, three national reserves, and three national monuments). Together, the protected forested areas comprise about 51% of the land of the region (6,728,744 hectares).
The Torres del Paine are the peaks of the mountain range, Cerro Paine. They extend 3,050 meters above sea level, and are joined by the Cuernos del Paine. The area also boasts valleys, rivers such as the Paine, lakes, and glaciers. The well-known lakes include Grey, Pehoé, Nordenskiöld, and Sarmiento. The glaciers, including Grey, Pingo and Tyndall, belong to the Southern Patagonia Ice Field.

============
The national park has over 140,000 visitors per year.[2] It is a popular hiking destination in Chile. There are clearly marked paths and many refugios which provide shelter and basic services. Hikers can opt for a day trip to see the towers, walk the popular W route in about five days, or trek the full circle in 8 to 9 days. Make reservations for the night you will stay at each refugio. If you stay inside, dinner is served and there are hot showers. There is also breakfast and an optional picnic lunch. For a lesser fee one can rent a tent and sleeping bag and sleep on the grounds outside of the refugio, where cold showers are an option. The refugio locations are also appropriate for pitching one's own tent and cooking with one's campstove. Cooking with the campstove is not permitted except in refugio locations. Camping is only allowed at specified campsites and wood fires are prohibited throughout the park. Fantastico Sur and Vertice Patagonia are the two owners of the various refugios in the park. For less adventurous visitors, there is a luxury hotel at the entrance to the park.
Hikers are not allowed to stray from the paths in the national park. The visitor impact on the park has been scientifically measured.
A certified guide is required to access some parts of the park. These arrangements need to be made before entering the park.
Visiting the park is recommended between late December and late February, during the southern summer. Not only is the weather more hospitable, but daylight hours are very long given the extreme southern latitude. Outside of this time frame, the weather becomes too extreme for the majority of the public. During the southern winter, daylight dwindles to only a few hours a day.
The park has been elected as the 5th most beautiful place in the world by the National Geographic.
