Kamikochi - Trekking Through the National Park in Japan (4K)
Kamikochi, sometimes also known as the Little Yosemite. This scenic valley is at an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level and surrounded by high mountains of the Northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
The views of mountains and river are absolutely breathtaking that it was appointed as a Special Natural Monument and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It is only one of the two places that hold both titles at once together with Kurobe Gorge. Endless photo opportunities await. If you an outdoor person, Kamikochi has some very nice camping sites with access to many peaks: Mt. Hotaka (3,190 m), Mt. Yake (2,455 m), Mt. Yari (3,180 m), Mt. Jonen (2,857) and more. Definitely worth visiting.

The Chubu Sangaku National Park (中部山岳国立公園, Chūbu Sangaku Kokuritsu Kōen) roughly encompasses the Northern Japan Alps, a volcanic mountain range that stretches across Toyama, Nagano and Gifu Prefectures, and includes several 3000 meter high peaks and breathtaking hiking courses. Together with the Central Japan Alps and Southern Japan Alps, the Northern Japan Alps were so named for being reminiscent of the European Alps.
The Chubu Sangaku National Park provides spectacular alpine vistas in every season. Popular destinations in the park include Kamikochi, a highland plateau famous for its beautiful mountain scenery; the unique Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route; and Hakuba, one of Japan's leading ski resort. 1. Traveling through Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Takayama, Hakui & Kanazawa in 2.5 Weeks
This video is about The Great Yakle Japanese Adventure that took place in June of 2017 over 2 1/2 weeks from June 10th-June 28th. We bought the 2 week Japan Rail Pass in advance from the states which is a must do. We left Minneapolis on June 10th and did not get to Tokyo until June 12th. We stayed in Shibuya Neighborhood in Tokyo for 3 days from June 12th-June 15th in an Airbnb very close to Sasazuka Station. From June 15th-June 21st we stayed at an Airbnb in Kyoto within walking distance from Kyoto station. Using Kyoto as a hub for day trips, we jetted out to Hiroshima and the island of Miyajima which is also home to Setonaikai National Park but mostly spent time seeing inner and outer Kyoto. From June 21st to June 24th we headed to the mountainous Takayama in the Gifu Prefecture to stay at a spa/resort called Associa Takayama Resort fully equipped with onsens looking out over amazing views. We did a must do day trip to Kamikochi in Chubu Sangaku National Park. It's a popular hiking spot in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery and there are monkeys. We then headed to Kanazawa in the Ishikawa prefecture for our last hub city from June 24th-June 27th. We stayed at another Airbnb in the Higashi Chaya District which is a beautifully preserved historical area of Kanazawa with many traditional wooden buildings also known as Old Town or the Geisha District. We did a day trip up the coast of the Sea of Japan to a very strange town called Hakui. It is famous for UFO sightings and has alien art work all over, ufo sculptures and a ufo museum. On June 27th we took a bullet train to Narita and stayed in a hotel that brought us to the airport the next morning. Can't wait to go back!

2018 Gifu Travel Video (TMV)
Gifu prefecture, north of Nagoya, is situated in a mountainous area of central Japan. The Hida region is surrounded by the both the Hida Mountains, which are referred to as the Northern Alps, and the Kiso Mountains, which are known as the Central Alps in Japan. It’s a gorgeous area far enough from the hustle and bustle of the major cities like Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo. The prefecture includes the notable cities such as Takayama, Gero, and Shirakawa-go.
In addition, the volcanic activity in the area provides the hot spring water for the Japanese onsens for the Gero, Hirayu, and Okuhida areas. We spent a really long time at the Hirayu-no-mori’s Onsen to take in the hot spring waters and enjoy the local Hida beef. After a long soak in the onsen, it seemed customary to have a glass of Hida milk, plain or COFFEE flavored.
But the mountainous terrain provides some gorgeous scenery in the area. We would have liked to see the Japanese Alps from the Shinhotaka Ropeway. However, Typhoon Jebi knocked out the power to the region. But we got some great drone footage instead.
From Hirayu, you can take a bus to the Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan. People will camp or do a day trip to walk Kamikochi’s many hiking trails that are well maintained. If you come during the right months, you can catch some of the macaque monkeys, snow-capped Hotaka Mountain range from Taisho Pond or Kappa Bridge, or just enjoy the changing colors of the seasons. We would have liked to have seen more but we just didn’t have enough time to take everything in at the park.
We loved the food as well. We stumbled upon a restaurant that only served Unagi (eel) and it was absolutely delicious. Worth a trip but not easy to get to unless you have a car.
There is plenty to do and see in the Hirayu area. We wish we could have seen more but that means we will need to come back again to experience more of what Hirayu has to offer.

Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan
Check out Kappa bridge, Taisho Pond, and go for a hike in the surrounding area. Devote at least half of your day for hiking the area. Or if you prefer, camp at the park. You can’t drive directly to Kamkochi, you need to take a bus or taxi. Park at the Akandana Parking lot. It’s about 600 ￥ and the first bus stop on the Nohi Bus for Kamikochi. You can buy your tickets for Kamikochi there, or if the power is knocked out, they will let you hop on the bus and take you to Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal so you can buy your tickets there. Just remember that the parking lot closes around 5 pm (17:00) so a lot enough time to get back or your car could be stuck for the evening.
Hirayu Onsen Area
Lots of onsens in the area. Even if you don’t stay in their hotel, many will allow you to use their onsen facilities and they are inexpensive to use. Just follow the rules of using the onsen, shower before going into the onsen, no towels in the onsen pool, get used to naked people around you, enjoy the experience, and your towel will smell like sulfur afterwards (so be warned!).

The bus terminal is one of the launching points to Kamikochi. The terminal has clean restrooms, lockers, onsen, restaurant, souvenir shop, and ticket kiosks. Parking is limited and depending on when you get there, only 1 hour of parking,
Hirayu-no-mori
The onsen we visited on our last trip. Well maintained facilities and you can buy towels from the lobby. In addition, they have a pretty good restaurant inside so you can soak in the onsen and enjoy a bite at one of their restaurants.

It was down due to no power from Typhoon Jebi hitting the area.
Hirayu Otaki Park (Hirayu falls)
It was raining so hard when we got there and it didn’t let up. We weren’t equipped to handle the 30 min trek from the parking lot to the falls. But maybe next time.

My mouth waters just thinking about this place. It’s definitely worth getting out there if you can make it. Savory and yet sweet sauce coats the entire unagi (eel) and it’s amazing. When you order, they give you a photo book with their offerings. It’s basically small to supersize me unagi, and you should get the soup as well.

Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery. It is open from mid/late April until November 15 and shuts down during winter. In 2014, Kamikochi is open from April 18 to November 15.
Kamikochi is a roughly 15 kilometer long plateau in the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by tall mountains, including Nishihotakadake (2909 m), Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m) and the active volcano Yakedake (2455 m).
Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi has only been moderately developed with half a dozen hotels, a few souvenir shops, mountain huts and hiking trails. Private cars are banned from Kamikochi, and access is only possible by bus or taxi. In the center of Kamikochi, a short walk from the bus terminal, stands the Kappabashi (Kappa Bridge). From the Kappabashi, hiking trails lead up and down the valley and towards the summits of the surrounding mountains.
The simplest way to enjoy a day in Kamikochi is by hiking the trails along Azusa River from Taisho Pond to Myojin Bridge. It is a mostly flat terrain and requires no hiking experience and only a few hours of time. The climbs to the surrounding peaks, however, are more challenging and only recommended between mid June and mid September.
Kamikochi is particularly beautiful during the autumn foliage season, which usually peaks in mid October. A wide range of alpine flora can be viewed from May through October, with the best time being mid May through July. Among the wildlife to be observed are monkeys and various birds. Bears are rarely encountered. Be warned that Kamikochi, especially around Kappabashi, gets very busy during the summer holidays (mid July through August) and on weekends during the autumn leaf season (October).
