MERRY CHRISTMAS/FELIZ NAVIDAD!
A Chilean took my motorcycle! Jorge flew over from New Zealand to Chile for a family affair and needed a motorcycle for the week. Alp volunteered for the ride down south and is actually going to see that part of Chile before me. That leaves me without a ride but we are going down south also to Concepcion Chile in the Bio Bio region for a few days. There the family shows me around the region of Conception like Las Tetas del Bio Bio, which literally means the tits of Bio Bio. And the little fishermans town Caleta Tumbes. Beautiful little bay with many colorful fishing boats floating around. So many stands with delicious seafood like crabs and mussels on the side of the road. We take the last boat tour of the day and follow the Tumbes coastal line for a bit and learn about the 2010 Tsunami that followed the earthquake back then. Caleta Tumbes is well worth a visit when in Conception. Check it out! A week later Jorge comes back with my motorcycle and he went back to New Zealand. It was great to see him again, especially in his native country Chile.

Join me on this motorbike ride around the world and experience life on the road.

A journey through Chile from north to south: its geography, people and festivals
Don't Visit Chile before You Watch This
Chile is a sinewy sliver of a nation, isolated from the rest of South America (and indeed the world) by the soaring Andes to the east, the vast Pacific Ocean to the west, the bone-dry Atacama Desert up north and the impenetrable wilds of Patagonia down south. From its disparate extremes to the ever-trendier capital of Santiago at its heart, the country’s citizens will unite in 2018 to mark 200 years of independence. Thanks to new non-stop flights from both London and Melbourne, it’s never been easier to catch a plane, raise a glass of pisco sour and toast the celebration.
1. Santiago-Chile
Santiago is one of those metropolitan joys where the more you look, the more you find. Funky cafes and dance clubs dot Bellavista, Forest Park art collections range from pre-Columbian to contemporary, and architecture runs the gamut from the 16th-century San Francisco Church to mirrored office towers. Shop with the locals at Mall Panora¡mico and give your palate meals to remember with hearty Chilean fare.
2. Easter Island
Located in the South Pacific more than 2,000 miles off the Chilean coast, Easter Island’s not the easiest place to reach. (If you’re interested, the easiest access is by air from Santiago or Tahiti.) But isolation has helped preserve the 1,500-year-old mysterious congregation of volcanic rock sculptures (maoi) that’s the island’s biggest claim to fame. After exploring the unique landscape, relax on an uncrowded beach and ponder one of the most mysterious places on Earth.
3. San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Looking for an unusual and beautiful landscape? Sandstone canyons, flamingo-dotted salt flats, steaming geysers, hot springs, volcanic peaks and alien-looking rock formations are on offer all around San Pedro de Atacama. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are the preferred means of exploration. Death Valley here is surprisingly great for picnics.
4.Puerto Natales, Chile
Proximity to the stunning Torres del Paine National Park makes Puerto Natales a gateway to adventure. It’s the best place to stock up on supplies and get your gear in order before you hop a two-hour bus ride to the park. This is an area for nature lovers, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, sailing and exploring.
5.Puerto Varas, Chile
Explore lovely, compact Puerto Varas on foot, the best way to take in views of Osorno Volcano and the wooden colonial homes built by German immigrants in the early 1900s. Several are designated as national monuments. Located on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second-largest lake, the village is the low-key antidote to the Lake District metropolis of Puerto Montt and serves as a jumping off point for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sea kayaking excursions.
Plan your trip to Puerto Varas
6. Pucon-Chile
Deep in the Patagonian Andes, Pucon is a picture perfect town accessed by plane in summer or by a nine-hour drive or train ride from Santiago. A great base for adventure vacations, Pucon is crammed with visitors during summer months December, January and February. Watch molten magma ooze down Mount Villarrica, hop between hot and cold thermal pools at Termas Geometricas or take the reigns of Criollo horses to explore the Andes on horseback. For other expeditions, rent a car or mountain bike.
7. Isla Chiloe, Los Lagos Region
Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.
8. valparaiso-Chile
Only 70 miles northwest of capital Santiago, Valparaiso is Chile's main port and known for its bohemian, artistic vibe and lovely vistas. Its UNESCO-designated historic downtown offers charming colonial architecture, great seafood restaurants, markets and stores. Take 100-year-old funicular Ascensor Artilleria or climb Cerro Concepcion for stunning ocean and city views. Back at street level, visit writer Pablo Neruda's house.
9. punta arenas
Overlooking the Strait of Magellan, this isolated city in southern Patagonia bustles with windswept trekkers en route to glacier-filled Torres del Paine National Park or an Antarctic cruise.

A Semester in Chile - 5 Months of Beauty, Friendship, and Growth
This year, I spent five months studying abroad in Santiago, Chile. My semester in Chile was nothing short of remarkable. From backpacking Patagonia to traveling to nearly all regions of the country, this is what I learned.
Chile is a magnificent country with so much to offer. I encourage all students to take the leap and study abroad, for it will teach you so many lessons about not only the place you study, but about yourself and where you come from.
I am currently in Thailand for another semester abroad. Follow along by hitting subscribe!
