Places to see in ( Strabane - UK )
Strabane, historically spelt Straban, is a town in West Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It was the headquarters of the former Strabane District Council. Strabane has a population of around 18,000, which is predominantly nationalist.
It is the second-largest town in Tyrone, after Omagh. It lies on the east bank of the River Foyle and is roughly equidistant from Omagh, Derry City and Letterkenny. The River Foyle marks the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. On the other side of the river (across Lifford Bridge) is the smaller town of Lifford, which is the county town of County Donegal. The Mourne flows through the centre of the town, and meets the Finn to form the Foyle River.
In the 20th century, Strabane garnered the dubious distinction of the highest unemployment rate in the Industrial World, during the height of The Troubles. It is one of the most economically deprived towns in the United Kingdom. Huge economic damage occurred in 1987 when much of the town centre flooded.
The Irish gauge 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) Londonderry and Enniskillen Railway (L&ER) reached Strabane in 1847, The Finn Valley Railway (FV) opened from Strabane to Stranorlar in 1863.[10][12] The FV was originally Irish gauge but in 1892 it merged with the 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge West Donegal Railway (WD) to form the Donegal Railway.
In 1792, the 4 miles (6.4 km) Strabane Canal was built from the tidal waters of Lough Foyle at Leck, to Strabane. It fell into disuse in 1962. In June 2006 the Strabane Lifford Development Commission awarded a £1.3m cross-border waterways restoration contract. The project was launched by President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, in Lifford and involves the restoration of 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of canal and two locks to working order.
The National Trust owns a Strabane shop in which John Dunlap learnt the printing trade. Dunlap went on to print the United States Declaration of Independence. The house has been visited by several famous people, including former US President Bill Clinton. It is located at the end of the Main Street.Which is now a classic cafe.
Dergalt, the ancestral home of Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, is near Strabane. Strabane is twinned with Zeulenroda-Triebes in the state of Thuringia, Germany.

The Cuilcagh Legnabrocky Trail is a linear route which will appeal to walkers with some experience walking in the hills. According to NIExplorer: “Cuilcagh, from the Irish meaning ‘chalky peak’, is Fermanagh’s highest mountain and sits right on the border of County Fermanagh in the north and County Cavan in the south of Ireland. Legnabrocky is the rural townland just to the north of the mountain’s summit and is where this walking trail begins.” Discover more of it with NI Explorer’s wonderful video.

It has been called the Hole of the doves. We were lucky to visit the forest just after a heavy downpour of rain and the sound of the waterfall coming over the top of the limestone cliff was tremendous. A short drive out of Enniskillen town to the Pollnagollum Cave is well worth the trip! Not well sign posted - but can be found. Its a nice walk and nice to be walking through the forest and find the cave.
Being in Northern Ireland means that you should be prepared for all the nature related places which you will get the chance to visit and experience. Pollnagollum Cave is one of those different attractions in Northern Ireland which should be visited to see and hear the sound of the waterfall while being surrounded with some green spaces.

Pollnagollum is known as the longest cave on the island of Ireland and the third deepest cave in the State. Exploring this cave goes back to 1880 when T. J. Westropp first found it, but it was until the 20th century when the real exploration of the place started. Over the passage of years, there were different surveys done regarding the exploration of the place and there were different passages found there as well, and until today, there are still some passages being explored by the cavers. Pollnagollum is one of the most popular and most visited caves in the country for cavers - another reason why it is one place which we recommend for tourists.
As we have just mentioned above, Pollnagollum Cave is located in Enniskillen, county Fermanagh and those who are not much familiar with county Fermanagh, it is one of the six different counties which form Northern Ireland, which Enniskillen is its town and the largest in both size and population.

One of reasons why lots of people started to consider visiting Pollnagollum Cave in Enniskillen is that the famous movie series, Game of Thrones, had some scenes which were taken there, attracting more people to the place as a whole and pushing them forward to come and check it all on their own.
This is not the only location to be found in Northern Ireland that is related to Game of Thrones, but there are actually lots of other places - making Northern Ireland a winner at this point - which appeared in the movie. Magnificent Ireland 65 years ago
A 16mm film of a visit to Ireland. Great landscapes, Carna, Galway and Clifden are called on in the great old car (make?)
A reviewer report that Newport Mayo is at the start of the clip the Black Oak river he is fishing in. Paul C, wrote: The footage starting at around 55 seconds is of Achill Island, Co Mayo. The shot of the 2 women walking over a bridge is taken just on the island from Achill Sound looking back over the bridge along the road towards Tonragee. The steep roofed building on the left is now the site of the Railway Hostel and adjacent to the building on the right is now the excellent Alice's bar. (At 48 seconds the mountain in the background looks an awful lot like Slievemore to me but it's hard to say..? (Michael:) Incidentally I met lady Mayo in Hong Kong in 1955.

Lough Erne County Fermanagh; NI Second Biggest Lake System-Irish Fishing - Enniskillen Fermanagh
These views of Lough Erne, county Fermanagh! Yes, they took our breath away as well, just the same way they did with you right now! A place in the town of Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, that you should add right now on your list of places to visit in Ireland.
Lough Erne is the name given to the two connecting lakes in county Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Lough Erne is considered the second biggest lake in Northern Ireland and Ulster and it is considered the fourth biggest in Ireland as a whole - which pushed us to reach this place, get introduced to its beauty, and see how magnificent it is.
The smaller southern lake is known as the Upper Lough as it is higher up the river, while the bigger northern lake is called the Lower Lough or Broad Lough. Lough Erne is found on the town of Enniskillen which is placed on the short stretch of river between the two lakes.
For us, this is considered the perfect place for nature due to the idea behind Lough Erne being the place where the two lakes meet, and also for being a place where different islands along with many coves and inlets are found; just as you can see through the video, it is a perfect description for nature.
Enniskillen town, where the Lough Erne is located, is a civil parish in county Fermanagh and it is located exactly in the center of the county where the upper and lower parts of Lough Erne lake are found. Everything has a story behind and the name of this town is believed to carry a story for it as well; it is believed that the name originally came from Cethlenn who was wounded in battle by an arrow and attempted to swim across the River Erne but never made it, and thus the place was named after her, since it comes from the Irish name Inis Ceithleann.
Visiting this place, Lough Erne, will give you the chance to see some of the other landmarks which are found in the town of Enniskillen, such as the Enniskillen Castle which is considered the oldest building in the place. It is not just about the castle, but Enniskillen is the place where the British Army regiments were found. This is considered a place with rich history and there are lots of hidden stories and gems that this name still carries.
To complete your trip in Enniskillen, there are some other suggestions which we will provide you with to visit as much historical and natural places as possible. In addition to the castle, you could also visit the Inniskillings Museum, the Castle Coole, the Monea Castle, the Coles Monument, the Portora Castle, the Tully Castle, the Florence Court, as well as other things simpler than those which you could also come across.
If you are staying at Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, during your visit but you are heading to Lough Erne in Enniskillen town to check this magical place in county Fermanagh, you could actually make a day trip there because it does not take so long; there are different routes and the longest of them will get you there in about two hours and twenty minutes in total, which is considered reasonable for a day trip and enjoying a couple of things to see in Enniskillen.
For those who are not willing to consider this a day trip, they could then search for the resorts or hotels which they could book at in order to enjoy their stay. One of the places which we suggest is the Lough Erne resort, which is sometimes referred to as Enniskillen Hotel, where there are different outdoor activities that one could get the chance to be part of in order to enjoy the fresh air of this place, such as going to the Lough Navar Forest, visiting the Crom Estate, going to Castle Archdale, or else visiting the Cuilcagh Mountain - these come in addition to the ones we have already mentioned above.
Connolly Cove is the place where we bring different recommendations and suggestions for those who enjoy visiting several places in the countries they are going to visit; not just the famous landmarks, but those beautiful ones which might not be gaining the same amount of tourists and visitors. This channel is mainly focused on Ireland and Northern Ireland, but we have been working hard to expand and reach different other countries around the world.
There are lots of things to be seen and visited in Northern Ireland ( there are also a lot of attractions that one could visit in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland ( you could enjoy the hop-on hop-off tour if you are visiting Dublin, Ireland ( and you could also enjoy seeing the location for filming The Game of Thrones which also happens to be in Ireland (
Tell us more about your journey to the Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, the town of Enniskillen, and share with us the places you have visited, the activities you have done there, and the amount of days you stayed there; tell us more about your trip to see this place in Ireland.
