HISTORY

East Grinstead is a town and civil parish in the northeastern corner of Mid Sussex district of West Sussex in England near the East Sussex, Surrey, and Kent borders. East Grinstead lies 27 miles (43 km) south of London, 21 miles (34 km) north northeast of Brighton, and 38 miles (61 km) east northeast of the county town of Chichester.
Nearby towns include Crawley and Horley to the west, Tunbridge Wells to the east and Redhill and Reigate to the northwest. The town is contiguous with the village of Felbridge to the northwest. Until 1974 East Grinstead was the centre for local government - East Grinstead Urban District Council - and was located in the county of East Sussex. East Grinstead, along with Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, as part of the former Cuckfield Rural District Council, came together as Mid-Sussex; moving to the jurisdiction of West Sussex County Council. Sackville College is a Jacobean almshouse in town of East Grinstead, West Sussex, England. It was founded in 1609 with money left by Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset. Kidbrooke Park (today Michael Hall School), a home of the Hambro family, was restored by the noted Sussex architect and antiquarian, Walter Godfrey, as was Plawhatch Hall.
East Grinstead has been a railway terminus since 1967, after the line from Three Bridges, to Royal Tunbridge Wells was closed under the Beeching Axe, a rationalisation of British Railways' branch lines based on a report by Dr Richard Beeching, a resident of the town at that time.

East Grinstead is a histotic town with alot of beautiful old buildings and different to what we are used to. We filmed this to record and keep our memories of this great place.

Bampton Village was used as the location for Downton Abbey Village, the Abbey itself was Highclere Castle some 30 miles away just south of Newbury. See the video to understand how unspoilt Bampton is, how little work was required to return Bampton to Edwardian England. In the video you see Downton's St Michael's Church, Mrs Crawley's house, and along Church View The Cottage Hospital, The Post Office and Dog and Duck Pub. Watch this video to help you plan your trip. I watched the start of the new series and Bampton featured a great deal in Mary's Wedding, her carriage passing the Cottage Hospital and arriving at the green.
Bampton which was previously an isolated Oxfordshire Village with no important through road fears the loss of its privacy. Coachloads of tourists from all over the world are starting to arrive to arrive in sleepy Bampton yet they are not prepared have no tea-rooms, souvenir shop, limited parking etc. The Library (Cottage Hospital in Downton) has some tourist information and sells a few souvenirs however has the usual library opening hours.There is a Coffee Shop in the Market Place plus some lively pubs.
If you manage to visit Bampton soon you will still find it utterly unspoiled. Downton Abbey has just won three Emmys. There are several bed and breakfast's in Bampton , including Wheelgate House, The Coach House and Upham House Bed & Breakfast if you could stay in Bampton that would be the best way to get the period feel of the village
also as many of the villagers have appeared in Down as extras I'm sure you get get to hear real inside information.
Bampton has for generations been renowned for its Morris Dancing traditions which are still celebrated today.
The nearest town to Bampton is Witney, so arrive by London, M40, Oxford, Witney, Bampton.
Some other tidbits , Shilton was used for the bus going through a ford scene, the delightful Swan Pub at Swinbrook has also appeared. The current library was formerly a Grammar School and if you look carefully at Bampton in Downton Abbey you will notice the odd TV aerial.
There is a village in England called Downton (Wiltshire/Somerset border) but it has nothing to do with Downton Abbey but has experienced a tourist boom anyway!

Camberley is an affluent town in Surrey, England, 31 miles southwest of Central London, between the M3 and M4 motorways. Camberley is in the far west of the county, close to the borders of Hampshire and Berkshire; the boundaries intersect on the western edge of the town where all three counties converge on the A30 national route. Camberley is the main town in the borough of Surrey Heath. Camberley's suburbs include Crawley Hill, Yorktown, Diamond Ridge, Heatherside, and Old Dean.
Camberley is in the far west of Surrey, adjacent to the boundaries of Hampshire's Hart district and Berkshire's Bracknell Forest district. It lies directly between the A30 national route and M3 motorway (junction 4 exit). It is at the northern edge of the Blackwater Valley conurbation, 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Farnborough, 8 miles (13 km) south of Bracknell and 17 miles (27 km) east of Basingstoke.
Camberley's town centre is host to The Mall shopping centre, built around the Main Square. This is a late 1980s development anchored by stores such as House of Fraser. The High Street has a number of shops as well as bars and clubs, many of the latter being more recent additions. There are a number of secondary shopping streets including Park Street, Princess Way and parts of London Road, including the Atrium development.
The town's theatre, Camberley Theatre, is owned and managed by Surrey Heath Borough Council. A familiar landmark in Camberley is the concrete pipe white elephant which is on the A30 approaching The Meadows roundabout. This was created as advertising by a pipe company which rented the premises. When they closed down, the upkeep of the elephant was written into the tenancy contract, so subsequent businesses have continued to look after it.
Camberley railway station is immediately south of the commercial centre on the Ascot to Guildford line, connected to Guildford, Aldershot in the south and Ascot to the north with two trains per hour in each direction.
