Diyasaru Park aka Biodiversity Study Park, Thalawathugoda (2018)
Thalawathugoda Biodiversity Study Park (now known as the Diyasaru Park) is a wetland artificially built near new Parliament Complex in Sri Jayawardanapura in a marshland. This park lies hidden behind the Parliament on the Japan-Sri Lanka friendship road with only a small board visible to the road. Diyasaru Park covers approximately 60 acres with artificial ponds and canals where you could see over 50 varieties of migratory birds, over 15 fish varieties including three endemic to Sri Lanka and over 25 butterfly species. It is also home to few crocodiles and about five Fishing Cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) locally known as “Handun Diviya” and “Kola Diviya“.
Being a wetland, this park serves home to many other different animals and marshy plants, dragonflies, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and many terrestrial and aquatic plant species indicating a high biodiversity value especially highlighting the value of urban wildlife. It contains a study center, open study area, board walks for walking through the wetland, butterfly garden, bird watching tower and bird hide, ground water wells, a laboratory, a herbarium, children’s pond, wetland agriculture area, rush and reed pond, audio video room and boat riding facilities.
Originally this park was a paddy land. During the late 1970’s the parliament lake was created and this land was used to deposit dredge material and cultivation ceased. At present it serves as a flood detention area, absorbing flood water during heavy storms and contributes protect parliament area from being inundated. Some of its other benefits are lowering the city temperature, providing a place for students to conduct biodiversity practicals, and providing a recreational area for lovers of nature.
The park is open all seven days of the week from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make other human beings aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin this place. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it. However I’ve a very kind and humble request from you all.
Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature (essentially Our Country) not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/reckless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in smaller groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring back if you have to take any with you.
* Don’t litter and even if it’ bio-degradable, please bring it back and dispose of the garbage properly and responsibly. Because no matter what it is, it will still be alien to that environment.
* Use reusable water bottles so that you don’t have to keep buying plastic ones. It’ll not only save you money but will help save nature massively.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Instead savor it.
* Try and bring if you spot any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.
* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.
* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Motorcycle Diaries Sri Lanka - 2018
Here we are again, on our motorcycles and making memories.
This time around the journey started from Matara (where our home town is) and we traveled all the way up to Rantambe by passing Thanamalvila, Ella, Demodara and Badulla. Then from Rantambe we spent exploring both Rantambe and Randenigala dams. We were lucky enough to witness the beauty of Rantambe Spill. On second day we traveled to Ek-Gal-Oya by passing Bibile, Inginiyagala and Nilgala. After an event full night we headed back to Matara through Siyabalanduwa, Monaragala, Buttala, Sooriyawewa. Ramesh, Chamath and myself (Damith) have found the 4th member of the Motorcycle diaries, Asiri on second day and rode with us many a miles to enjoy the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka while riding our trustworthy bikes. Our friendship began in 1991 at Grade 1-A class of Rahula College and we been through many journeys and this is yet another 700KM adventure.
Cheers!

Sri Lanka,ශ්රී ලංකා,Ceylon,Orchid,Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya,Kandy
Here you get a full preview of all orchids on display at the Kandy Orchid House. I had to speed up a bit so that the video won't be too long for the upload.
Royal Botanical Garden, Peradeniya is situated about 5.5 km to the west from the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and attracts 2 million visitors annually.[1] It is renowned for its collection of a variety of orchids. It includes more than 4000 species of plants, including of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees.[1] Attached to it is the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka. The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture. (Wikipedia)Orchidaceae is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species, found in 880 genera.[2][3] Selecting which of the two families is larger is still under debate, as concrete numbers on such enormous families are constantly in flux. Regardless, the number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. The family also encompasses about 6--11% of all seed plants.[4] The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species).
The family also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), Orchis (type genus), and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century, horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars.
