Dartmouth is a town and civil parish in the English county of Devon. Dartmouth is a tourist destination set on the western bank of the estuary of the River Dart, which is a long narrow tidal ria that runs inland as far as Totnes.
The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place annually over three days at the end of August. The event sees the traditional regatta boat races along with markets, fun fairs, community games, air displays including the Red Arrows and fireworks. A Royal Navy guard ship is present at the event.
Bayard's Cove has been used in several television productions, including The Onedin Line a popular BBC television drama series that ran from 1971 to 1980. Many of the scenes from the BBC's popular series 'Down to Earth', starring Ricky Tomlinson, were filmed at various locations around the town.
Notable tourist attractions include the Dartmouth Royal Naval College, Dartmouth Castle and the Dartmouth Steam Railway which terminates at Kingswear on the opposite bank of the river.
Boat cruises to nearby places along the coast (such as Torbay and Salcombe) and up the river (to Totnes, Dittisham and the Greenway Estate) are provided by several companies. The paddlesteamer PS Kingswear Castle returned to the town in 2013
Dartmouth is linked to Kingswear, on the other side of the River Dart, by three ferries. The Higher Ferry and the Lower Ferry are both vehicular ferries. The Passenger Ferry, as its name suggests, carries only passengers, principally to connect with the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway at Kingswear railway station. The nearest bridge across the Dart is in Totnes, some 11 miles (18 km) away by road. The A379 road runs through Dartmouth, linking the town to Slapton and Kingsbridge to the southwest and to Torbay to the east across the Higher Ferry.

Short walk from Kingswear to Coleton, Devon 4K UK Travel Video
Set opposite the town of Dartmouth, Kingswear is a charming character village that has some of the most beautiful views across the River Dart.
Set on the banks of the River Dart, Kingswear village is well worth a visit or a stay to take full advantage of the beautiful South Devon countryside.
The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway terminates here, allowing you take the unique passenger ferry across to Dartmouth - or vice versa. Kingswear castle sits squarely on the rocks perilously close to the sea, and Coleton Fishacre National Trust Property makes for a lovely day out.

Dartmouth, south Devon by Classic Cottages
Dartmouth is a pretty town on the edge of south Devon with a thriving collection of pubs, restaurants, bars and cafes. The summer is filled with boat regattas, air shows and festivals. A popular location for holidays, visitors like to see the castle at the mouth of the River Dart, explore Dartmouth town itself, go for coastal walks along the South West Coast Path or hop on the ferry across to Kingswear. From Dartmouth, you can see many places from the water: travel up the river to Agatha Christie's Greenway, run by the National Trust, and stop for a cold pint at the Ferryboat Inn in Dittisham.
Near Dartmouth is the busy town of Brixham, which hosts a quirky Pirate Festival every year alongside various celebrations surrounding its seaside heritage. There's also the sandy beaches of Start Point Bay, including Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands, and the iconic lighthouse at Start Point that hosts private tours at certain points of the year.

Improved new version of Dartmouth Castle)
One of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. For over 600 years Dartmouth Castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth. It offers stunning views of the estuary and out to sea and offers a great family day out, whatever the weather.
This fascinating complex of defences was begun in 1388 by John Hawley, privateering Mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flamboyant 'Shipman' in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. About a century later the townsmen added the imposing and well-preserved 'gun tower', probably the very first fortification in Britain purpose-built to mount 'ship-sinking' heavy cannon. Climb to the top for breathtaking views across the estuary and see how it could be blocked in wartime by a heavy chain.
Unusually incorporating the fine church of St Petrox, the castle saw action during the Civil War, and continued in service right up until the Second World War. Successive up-dating included the Victorian 'Old Battery' with its remounted heavy guns, guardrooms and maze of passages to explore. Here a dramatic film sequence recreates a Victorian gun-firing, and throughout the fortress displays retell the six centuries of castle history.
There is plenty to do inside the castle and if the weather is fine, you can make it a full day out with a river boat trip from the town quay up to the castle, landing you a minute's walk away from the castle entrance. After you have explored the castle, you can visit a riverside tea room for light lunches and snacks. Walkers will love the coastal and woodland walks around the castle where you can spot plenty of wildlife and birds.
