Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world though it's comparably tiny. Beside the Galapagos Islands (which is the #1 tourist destination in Ecuador) the country has a lot more to offer, therefore I focussed on La Sierra in this video which is a paradise for landscape lovers and outdoor adventurers.
Another reason to visit the Andean region is that you have the chance to dive into the local culture and get a real feeling of Ecuador. The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.
Things to do in Ecuador covered in this video:
01) 00:36 - Otavalo market in Otavalo
02) 01:00 - Hike the Cuicocha lake
03) 01:25 - Middle of the World, Mitad del Mundo & Quitsato in Cayambe
04) 01:48 - Quito, capital & UNESCO World Heritage
05) 02:08 - Termas de Papallacta (hot springs)
06) 02:24 - Cayambe Coca National Park
07) 02:45 - Quilotoa & Shalala viewpoint
08) 03:13 - Tren Crucero & Nariz del Diablo (Devil's nose)
09) 03:47 - Inka ruins in Ingapirca
10) 04:04 - Cuenca & it's beautiful old town

Guayaquil is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador, with around 2.69 million people in the metropolitan area, as well as the nation's main port. The city is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas and the seat of the namesake canton.
Guayaquil is located on the western bank of the Guayas River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Guayaquil.
See in Guayaquil, Ecuador
====================
These places are located in the downtown area, near the main hotels and at the heart of the regenerated area, a very secure walk.
The Malecon Simón Bolivar. It is the riverfront promenade for the Guayas River, with shops, theaters, museums, gardens and shopping arcades. The Rotonda monument in the middle of the Malecon, commemorates the famous meeting of Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin that took place there.
The Malecon del Salado located next to the Estero Salado (an estuary of sea water), here you can enjoy fresh air and wonderful sunsets, with restaurants of typical food, all framed within a very safe new park.
The renewed downtown area (Area regenerada), very secure to walk and look around.
Museums (Museo Municipal, Museo Nahim Isaias, MAAC and Presley Northon Museum are located in the center of the downtown)
Santa Ana & El Carmen hills, you can see almost the whole city from here. You can walk up the 400 odd steps to the top from the Malecon Simón Bolivar. There is a lighthouse, museum, small chapel and park at the top. Along the stairs, vendors sell water, ice cream and other snacks.
Las Peñas, where the city was founded, was actually rebuilt and painted bright colors where most of Guayaquil's colonial buildings are.
Parks, we recommend to visit the Seminario Parque de las Iguanas downtown, which is home to hundreds of tame iguanas, some fish in a pond and a black squirrel or two, and do not forget some turtles.
The Central Bank Building has several giant paintings on the outside of the building.
Markets, you can visit the Mercado Artesanal, where you can buy some very traditional souvenirs from all regions of Ecuador.
Parque Histórico, Avenue Rio Esmer Aldas, Guayaquil, Ecuador, . an interesting recreation of the early 20th century years of Guayaquil, the look, the people and the food. Includes a small zoo, some old town-buildings where moved here as well as a Hacienda-Building and a small country-side farm-house. There is also a garden where you can see all kinds of tropical fruits being grown. In case you know coffee only as the black beans, chocolate only as powder and sugar only as a white powder - this is the place to go. no entrance fee (2013).
Jardín Botánico (Botanical Garden), ciudadela 'las Orquídeas', Av. Francisco De Orellana (in the northern part of the city), . In the Botanical Garden you find many tropical plants directly under the blue sky as well as local animals and especially a butterfly farm. edit
The cemetery north from the centre has few impressing graves and statues as well as plenty of more normal graves. Worth a visit if you're into graveyards.
Zoológico El Pantanal, Km. 23 Vía a Daule, Guayaquil, . Nice small zoo in the northern part of Guayaquil. Visit, if the kids want to see more animals after having been to Parque Histórico
Other interesting places near Guayaquil:
Crucero Discovery, rides up and down the Rio Guayas. You can catch it at Malecon Simón Bolivar. Crazy parties at night.
Traditionally, Salinas has been the main beach, but since 2008 General Villamil Playas has attracted a big part of the local and international tourism. Fishing, surfing, and other water sports. Many modern hotels and delicious sea food. Interesting night life. Wonderful whale-watching during June to September.
The following places are interesting to see if you are daring:
6 de Marzo is an interesting street to visit about 10 blocks from the downtown area during the week before New Year's Eve, because the street is lined with Años Viejos or old years, paper maché figures ranging in size from about 12 inches up to 10 or more feet tall. These are often political, movie or cartoon characters.
La Bahía, just off the southern end of the Malecon Simón Bolivar. Huge market area full of shops and stalls of almost anything imaginable. Because it is so cheap you will have lower social class people and have to be a little careful with belongings.
Cocoa or Banana plantations are located around Guayaquil city.
Guayaquil, a Destination marked by Progress and Freedom (Documentary)
Known as the Pearl of the Pacific, Guayaquil is the development engine of the country. The maritime port of Guayaquil is considered as one of the most efficient of the Pacific Coast; 80% of the country’s cargo passes through the port of Guayaquil. It is the point of entry into Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and the world. It is the most visited city of the country if we add up the national and international visitors. The Jose Joaquin de Olmedo airport, the largest in the country, has been recognized by the users, internationally in its category, as the best airport, for its facilities and the services that are provided in an agile and efficient way; it also has one of the best land terminals of South America.
Guayaquil is considered the city with the most progress in the last 20 years. Mayor Jaime Nebot, with a visionary spirit and the creative work of the people of his administration, has taken the city to the highest levels of development and welfare. It is a beautiful city to visit and discover; it has all the tourist attractions that makes it a national and international destination, where the tourists are welcome with affection by its joyful, kind and tropical people.
Guayaquil is my destination
• To know its history, parks, squares, monuments and churches.
• To Know its museums, sculptures and the street art that is exhibited in its murals and wonderful stained-glass windows, which embellish the bridges and buildings of the city.
• To be part of the Route of Faith and to know its massive religious processions and heritage churches.
• To have fun and enjoy its piers, parks, water fountains and the rides through the Guayas River and the Salado Estuary.
• To taste its gastronomy.
• To enjoy its nature. Guayaquil is one of the fewest cities in the world that hosts diverse ecosystems like tropical forests, both humid and dry; mangroves, which alongside estuaries and the majestic Guayas River, have and an incomparable fauna and flora. The beauty of its landscapes makes the city a place to dream. The birds can be observed in the city thanks to the urban regeneration that has created scenarios within the parks, piers, and flowerbeds, which have become a habitat for different endemic species. The dolphins of El Morro represent a great attraction and also the iguanas that can be observed in the Seminario Park.
• Ecuador is the place of orchids and was chosen for having a variety of more than 4.000 species. Guayaquil has diverse orchids that distinguished the city, reason why, the City’s Council picked an orchid to be the emblematic flower of Guayaquil: the “ Encyclia Angustiloba Schltr” that was discovered 200 years ago an that can be appreciated at the botanical garden, hills and different settings where it flowers with its enigmatic beauty. An enormous sculpture will be crafted to represent the orchid in the north area of the city.
We invite you to visit us, you will fall in love with Guayaquil and we are sure that this beautiful city will remain in your hearts with a strong and special beat that will motivate you to come back. We will welcome you with open arms because we are a sheltered port that receives all the people that visit our city with love. Guayaquil is my destination.

Ecuador's luxury Tren Crucero, June 2014
This video is aimed at rail enthusiasts and shows railway aspects of the 4 day, 3 night Tren Crucero (train cruise) from Quito to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The journey was one of the best travel experiences we have ever had. The train is brand new. The coaches are very comfortable, the service impeccable, the routing is through amazing vistas, viewing Ecuador's volcanoes, beautiful small towns, children waving excitedly as you go by, hard working people in traditional dress tending the fields, dogs racing after the train, cows, pigs, and llamas grazing near the tracks. All are things you do not see on the regular tourist trail. You do not sleep on the train but in lovely haciendas, each different and offering quaint rooms with baths and good food. Lunch is at other haciendas or catered by the villages and places that you pass. All food and most drinks are included in the price. The tour guides were knowledgeable about the train, people, and countryside. They were friendly, personable, switching from Spanish to English easily, and helpful. At two places the diesel locomotives are switched for different restored steam locomotives, which makes the whole train cruise even more special. We had a great holiday in Ecuador and met an interesting group of international visitors. Do not miss Tren Ecuador! We travelled to Ecuador with Sunvil Traveller in the UK. sunvil.co.uk
Please pass on this link. Further videos will be posted showing more of the scenery and excursions on the Tren Crucero, plus Mashpi Lodge in the Cloud Forest.
PORTOVIEJO - ECUADOR - 2017
Portoviejo, capital of the Manabi province, located in the western lowlands region of Ecuador. With 280.000 inhabitants it's the political and economical capital of the region. Portoviejo is a large commercial center for the province, where there are two shopping malls, one with a large hypermarket, 8 movie theaters, food court, and other stores. There is a large flea market in downtown. Locals are very friendly and very well educated. The city is home of the cancer treatment hospital Dr Julio Villacreses Colmont serving the provinces of Manabí and Esmeraldas. Portoviejo is the perfect place to enjoy traditional Manabí cuisine, of great fame in Ecuador, usually at countryside restaurants located on the side of the Portoviejo-Crucita roadway. The local airport is used for domestic flights. This city is one of the oldest in Ecuador. Portoviejo is currently recovering from a devastating earthquake on 16th of April 2016. 676 people lost their lives and lost many beloved ones. Ecuador was broken. It mourned and cried. This was a national disaster that no one could have seen coming nor preventing. Today, Portoviejo is recovering with the help of Ecuador. Ecuador was more unified then ever..
Portoviejo y Manabí, Ecuador es contigo !
Oremos por Ecuador, Ecuador unidos por siempre independientemente de las diferencias !

The last Trolleybus in Colombia
The Wonderful Trolley Cafe
The Bogotá trolleybus system closed in August 1991. The vehicles were collected in the trolleybus yards on Av. Chile and in a field near Parque Jaime Duque in Briceño, a town 40 km north of the capital. All had been sold to a scrap dealer, but remained untouched, unprotected and exposed to the elements for the next two decades.
In 2009 Bogotá resident Nelson Herrera visited Briceño and learned that the vehicles were finally to be destroyed. He returned several times, acquired permission to enter the grounds and took the following photographs in July and August 2010.
The last photograph shows trolleybus 2088, which Sr. Herrera purchased from the scrap dealer, along with spare parts and other pieces that he needed. He decided to rebuild the vehicle as a café.
Sr. Herrera had the vehicle transferred to a vacant lot in Bogotá, where he began its restoration.
The colors were matched exactly to the colors that appeared on the vehicles during operation.
The coat of arms of The City of Bogotá and the ZiU logo (Cyrillic lettering) of the Uritsky company in the Soviet Union, which built the trolleybuses in the 1970s.
Finally, with restoration complete, Bogotá trolleybus 2088 was placed on display in the Parqueadero Milenio (parking lot) on Calle 28 near the city center [see map below]. Sr. Herrera says that it took eight months of negotiations with municipal authorities to obtain permission to place the vehicle in this location and convert it to a café.
What a contrast with the vehicle's scrap yard location only a few months before! Number 2088 is now believed to be the only trolleybus in existence in Colombia. All the other trolleybuses in the two scrap yards were destroyed.
Nelson Herrera: trolleybus 2088's hero, savior, restorer, new owner and -- now -- chef. The café finally opened for business in June 2011 and currently operates 7 am to 8 pm on weekdays and from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. It is closed Sundays.
The Trolley Café is located on the south side of Calle 28, between Carreras 13A and 14. The word Carrera (boulevard) is sometimes abbreviated K. Carrera 14 is also known as Avenida Caracas, was once the path of a steam railroad, and today is traversed by the city's Transmilenio bus rapid transit. Trams ran on Carrera 13 (but not on 13A) until 1951. Trolleybuses ran on Carrera 14 until 1991. Both trams and trolleybuses ran on Calle 26. [Google Maps]

It is my dream some day to visit the Trolley Cafe in Bogota despite the fact that before reading the story on tramz.com and Mike's Bogota Blog, Columbia was very high on my list of places which I should avoid. I was wrong because despite all the problems of Columbia, I have realised that there live some of the best people in the world !
