Durbuy; the smallest city in the world is in Belgium.
We have visited Durbuy; a town which lies in the Belgium Ardennes and that claims to be the smallest city in the world. The municipality has around 10,633 inhabitants and is quite small. We have walked around for 4 hours which gave us enough time to visit the whole city. Unfortunately, the castle was closed so we weren't able to visit it.

Welkom in het Land van Durbuy
Er bestaat een streek van duizend-en-één genoegens, op de grens van de Condroz, de Famenne en de Ardennen : het Land van Durbuy (Terre de Durbuy). Een streek met een uitstraling buiten zijn territoriale grenzen. Werd zij niet erkend, in 2007, door de Europese Commissie, als « Destination rurale d'excellence » of « Uitstekende plattelandsbestemming », samen met negen andere Europese steden?
Een streek die rijk is aan kleuren en smaken, die men sinds het jaar 1237 de « Terre de Durbuy » noemt! We kunnen alleen maar vaststellen dat alle goede feeën een gifte hebben gedaan aan deze kleine hoek in Wallonië. Mensen en natuur leven in een perfecte harmonie. Eén blik volstaat niet om alle schatten te zien. Integendeel, men moet de tijd nemen om op ontdekkingstocht te gaan. Met een open geest. Op avontuur. Met familie of met vrienden. Op stap door bossen en velden.
Op weg doorheen een rijke geschiedenis. Naar kastelen, en naar Romaanse en Gotische kerken. Door berg en dal, doorheen landschappen die door de eeuwen en door de moeite van de bewoners zijn geworden wat ze nu zijn. Via oude wegen, of langs de Ourthe of de Aisne. Om halt te houden bij een hunebed, bij een stenen kruis of bij een kasteelhoeve. Om te genieten van de charme, de schoonheid, en de rust van de verscheidene dorpen en gehuchten, elk met hun rijk en gevarieerd verleden, waar nog vele huizen in houten vakwerk naast meer prestigieuze gebouwen in kalkbreuksteen staan.
En waarom niet even een duik nemen in de Oude Stad Durbuy, die vasthoudt aan haar reputatie van de kleinste stad ter wereld ? Of zijn historisch centrum bezoeken, met zijn Korenhalle, met de kasteelheuvel, met de oude gepaveide straatjes, met de muren die uit een andere tijden lijken te komen, met de anticlinale, om dan aan één van de vele tafels te gaan genieten van een lekkere maaltijd? Want in Durbuy wordt lekker eten van generatie tot generatie doorgegeven. Onweerstaanbaar!
Tenzij u gewoon rust en kalmte zoekt. Een groene ruimte om de batterijen weer op te laden. Om een lucht(je) te scheppen. En ook hier kan het Land van Durbuy met zijn gezellige en rustige dorpen aan uw verwachtingen tegemoetkomen. Te voet, met de fiets, of te paard op stap gaan ; gaan vissen of jagen ; op het water of op de rotsen ; sensatiesporten beoefenen : alles is mogelijk in een wereld van mysterieuze bossen en levendig water.Een verblijf in het Land van Durbuy, lang of kort, belooft rijk aan emoties te zijn. Zelfs voor de inwoners blijft er altijd een hoekje dat nog ontdekt kan worden. Of een speciaal gerecht dat gezellig, vrienden onder elkaar, geproefd gaat worden.
Welkom in het Land van Durbuy, een streek waar men al sinds lang graag halthoudt, om te rusten en om van het klimaat en de landschappen te genieten, een streek waar genieten van elk moment een levenskunst is. Vergeet wagens, drukte en geluiden van de stad. Ver van de dagelijkse zorgen. Herontdek eenvoudige geneugten. Genieten van de tijd die voorbijgaat is fijn, zeker tijdens het proeven van één of andere streekspecialiteit.
Welkom in het Land van Durbuy, in de vrijgevige natuur, in een goed bewaard milieu, en in een streek van smaken en geuren !

Schepen voor Toerisme en Extra-Muros-Betrekkingen
Durbuy is een stad in de Belgische provincie Luxemburg. De stad aan de rivier de Ourthe is gelegen in drie geografische streken: de Ardennen, de Condroz en de Famenne.
Durbuy is één van de toeristische trekpleisters in Wallonië. Jaarlijks trekt de van oorsprong Middeleeuwse stad die (volgens de inwoners) bekend staat als de kleinste ter wereld duizenden toeristen.
Durbuy telt bijna 11.000 inwoners. De stadskern zelf bestaat uit slechts een aantal straten en heeft zo'n 400-tal inwoners. De overgrote meerderheid van de inwoners van de gemeente woont dan ook in één van de vele dorpjes.
Durbuy telt 12 deelgemeenten. Naast Durbuy zelf zijn dit nog Barvaux, Bende, Bomal, Borlon, Grandhan, Heyd, Izier, Septon, Tohogne, Villers-Sainte-Gertrude en Wéris.
Daarnaast liggen nog verscheidene dorpjes en gehuchtjes verspreid over de deelgemeenten. In Barvaux ligt Bohon, in Septon ligt Palenge en in Borlon ligt Oneux. In Tohonge liggen naast de dorpskern zelf nog in het noorden Longueville, Houmart, Hermanne en Verlaine-sur-Ourthe en in het zuiden Warre. In Bomal ligt het gehucht Herbet. Izier heeft het gehucht Ozo. In Wéris ligt het dorpje Oppagne en het gehucht Morville. Verder zijn er nog gehuchtjes zoals Petite-Somme en Rome.
