ELEPHANT BUTTE | Exploring New Mexico's Largest State Park
Our car was parked near what was likely full-pond elevation of Elephant Butte Lake, but the walk down to the shoreline was over a quarter mile. Along the way to the shoreline, tire tracks from off-road vehicles criss-crossed the desert landscape. Off on the horizon, the desert mountains served as a reminder that we were 4,500 feet up in elevation.
New Mexico's largest state park is home to Elephant Butte Lake, a massive reservoir which is fed by the famous Rio Grande River. The fluctuation in the water levels is the result of a water-trade deal between Texas and New Mexico, with Texas receiving more water in the winter months and New Mexico receiving more water in the summer months.
During the summer, Elephant Butte Lake State Park is a popular destination for fishermen, campers, and families all looking to getaway and relax. There are RV hookups, marinas, campsites, and picnic areas for all to enjoy. Located just 10 minutes outside Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, it's an easily accessible and beautiful destination. Located about halfway between Albuquerque, NM and El Paso, TX, it's a popular getaway for those looking to get out of the city and into a more rural part of the state.
Our time at Elephant Butte Lake State Park was during the winter months, so the water was lower, and the people were a little more scarce, but that didn't stop us from being in awe at the beauty of the lake and the surrounding landscape.

My name is Mike and I travel around with my dog Sober in my 2003 F450 Class C SunSeeker with a v10 engine, living on the road. I also started a relationship with a woman named Marlo who after being together with for around a year, sold her house and bought her own class A rig to join me on the road traveling. My dog Sober's name has nothing to do with drinking, it is her personality. She is always calm and Sober!
