Mysterious Sands of Russia. Russian village surviving in the sands
The village of Shoina is spread over several tens of kilometres along the White Sea coast beyond the Arctic Circle and 1,400 kilometres north of Moscow. It was founded in 1930 as a huge base for the fishing industry, producing a variety of canned fish. The port hosted literally hundreds of cargo ships. Shoina was once a hive of activity: the locals grew crops and bred cattle. Songs and social occasions celebrating youth could be heard all through the night.
Today though the settlement is on the brink of an ecological disaster. Deep-sea trawling has wiped out all sea bed vegetation causing a build-up of thousands of tons of sand which is blown onto the land by powerful arctic winds, obliterating houses and buildings. Even though Shoina's population is shrinking rapidly, some local people continue to stand against the dire effects of desertification: they eke out a living by fishing, growing scarce vegetables and, as if that wasn’t enough, they take charge of ensuring that their local weather station remains operational.
The severe aftermath of desertification has also affected the Kalmykia region, once famous for its fertile lands. The “Cherny Zemli” reserve is a most unique man-made desert, 200 kilometres southwest of Elista, Kalmykia's capital. In the Soviet times the land here was set aside to grow corn. That decision however turned out to be an unqualified disaster; The crop drew massive amounts of water from the ground and completely dehydrated the soil leaving behind only sand. The locals speak out about how they’re now seeking to counter the aftermath of desertification.
The “Chara sands” desert has been recognized being among the most unique places on the Russian map. This natural wonder is in the extreme north of Zabaykalsky Krai, in Kalarsky District. An outstanding mix of mountain ice peaks, dark Taiga forests and endless patches of mysterious quicksand attracts tourists from all over the country but only the bravest of travellers can make it to this desert. The natural wonder is buried deep in pathless woods and seemingly impassable swamps.
In this programme RTD unveils the distinctive dunes of Russia’s permafrost and steppes, discovers how they emerged and what needs to be done to protect nature.

Why Russia under Putin gets more nationalistic
Why does Russia under Putin get more nationalistic? Why is nationalism in Russia a big topic? And what is modern Russia under Putin pursuing for a strategy? Dutch journalist and Russia expert try to find out who is pushing the forces behind Putin's desire for expansion and why people in Russia are again embracing nationalism.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Since Crimea is seized by Russia something has changed. The kindness and spontaneity are gone and the old mistrust of the West has come up again. Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius meet people on the street, in a shop where Putin T-shirts are sold, visits Siberian separatists, and meets Putin's philosopher and advisor Aleksandr Dugin, who rewrote the idea of Eurasia.
For the first time since World War II, a European country invaded another. The Crimea was again part of Russia, as it should be. And for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, they could be proud of something. A patriot law passed by the Duma is intended to make the Russians even more patriotic. The law comes into effect in schools, in the media and also in singing choirs. A conservative, traditional life is promoted. Brandt visits a military choir that performs patriotic songs and speaks to people who feel strengthened thanks to Putin.

Russia Travel Video
Russia Travel Video - For centuries the world has wondered what to believe about Russia. The country has been reported variously as a land of unbelievable riches and indescribable poverty, cruel tyrants and great minds, generous hospitality and meddlesome bureaucracy, beautiful ballets and industrial monstrosities, pious faith and unbridled hedonism. These eternal Russian truths coexist in equally diverse landscapes of icy tundra and sun-kissed beaches, dense silver birch and fir forests and deep and mysterious lakes, snow-capped mountains and swaying grasslands -- those famous steppes. Factor in ancient fortresses, luxurious palaces, swirly spired churches and lost-in-time wooden villages and youll begin to see why Russia is simply amazing.

Symbol of peace: a Buddha for Europe in Bremen
The Japanese Garden at botanika has a new attraction: the European Peace Buddha. As part of an initiative by the Dalai Lama, every continent is going to receive a Peace Buddha. The first one, in Asia, was dedicated by the Dalai Lama in Jayanti Park, New Delhi, in 1993. Since August 2017, the second Peace Buddha has been located at botanika in Bremen.
The gilded bronze statue is intended to serve as a symbol of peace for everyone rather than as a place of worship. Each Peace Buddha should be protected by a roof. In Europe – for the time being – it is that of the greenhouse which contains the Japanese Garden at botanika. The plan is to construct a separate building for the Peace Buddha, which will be adjacent to the Japanese Garden, at a later point.

Interesting Meditation Fitness for Buddhists in Europe

The meditation describes the practice of a state of concentrated attention on an external object, thought, conscience, or the state of their own concentration. The word meditation comes from the Latin meditatio, originally indicates a type of intellectual exercise. Thus, in the Western religious sphere has distinguished between meditation and contemplation, reserving the second meaning religious or spiritual. This distinction becomes tenuous in Eastern culture, so that at the beginning of the influence of Eastern thought in Europe, the word would acquire a new popular use.
This new use relates to self meditation yoga, originated in India. In the nineteenth century, Theosophists adopted the word meditation to refer to the various practices of interior recollection or own contemplation of Hinduism, Buddhism and other Eastern religions. However, it should be noted that this practice is not foreign to Western history, as shown by discoveries of vases Celts with figures in yogic posture.
A wide variety of guides and lessons for meditation, ranging from those presented in the religions to the therapeutic, through their own ideologies of certain individuals. Research scientists have shown that some techniques of meditation can help improve concentration, the memory and improve the immune system and overall health. For Rudolf Steiner, founder of anthroposophy, meditation is the way to knowledge of the spiritual world and requires special exercises.
Different meditation techniques can be classified according to their focus. Some focus on the field of perception and experience, also called mindfulness. Others focus on a particular object, and are calling 'concentration'. There are also techniques that exchange field and the object of meditation. Categorize the varieties of meditation is difficult. However, within religious traditions it is always easier, although it should be noted that meditation does not have to be religious background, but is simply a tool to increase the internal energy and acquire a higher level of consciousness.
There are many different Buddhist meditation techniques depending on each tradition and school, for example in Theravāda Visuddhimagga is listed as 40 meditative methods. While all are based on two components called Samatha (mental calm, tranquility) and Vipassana (direct knowledge, intuition). It is considered that the methods derived from Samatha serve normally precede and prepare the Vipassana meditation.
Buddhism is a means of individual and social transformation. The word Buddha is a title or epithet and not a name. Means one who is awake in the sense of having woken up to reality The Buddha was a human being who, through tremendous efforts, transformed and transcended his human limitations therein creating a new order of being, a being illuminated.
Although Buddhist meditation is not exclusively sit on the floor (or on a cushion zafu ) to develop a contemplative art, from ancient to seek a quiet and preferably close to nature to promote the progress of meditation has been a constant. Besides that so advised own Buddha. Thus, the most popular representation of the Buddha is that of a figure sitting with legs crossed in the call lotus position. Although there are other representations of the Buddha standing, lying down, or in a chair.
In Buddhist meditation you try to predispose certain mental condition that favors samādhi or state of maximum attention and tranquility. The samadhi is considered something prior to the completion of a high understanding and of nirvana. In primitive Buddhism, as we know from the sources Pali school Theravada- Buddha explains the different states or jhanas the practitioner experienced in their progress, as well as how to identify and methods to follow. Similarly, in Mahayana Buddhism similar explanations of the different states appear next to new formulations. Historically, these new formulations, often involving the recovery of old meanings to adapt to a new context. At the core of all Buddhist meditation is a quiet and careful observation of both the mental processes and phenomena of life.
From this common basis, throughout history the different Buddhist traditions developed their own techniques of meditation depending on their own historical development and cultural influences. In all traditions there are plenty of meditative techniques and variants, so it is difficult that in a Buddhist tradition is not found at least indicated that occupies the attention of others.
