Santorini | Things Worth Buying
What you're going to buy on Santorini is, of course, up to you. But you might take a few tips from us, who have the experience.
What you're going to buy on Santorini is, of course, up to you. But you might take a few tips from us, who have the experience.
At the low end of the scale there's rocks. Yes, rocks, baskets full of them outside every souvenir shop. They're chunks of cooled lava and ash from that big blast in the dawn of history -- very light and colourful when polished. There's also plenty of pumice for smoothing out that dried skin on your feet, for example.
Clothes can be a bargain, as long as you know where to look. In particular, there's an outlet in Fira which literally only sells white clothing for ladies. It's here that you can get the best in traditional Aegean design, from simple blouses to entire gossamer-light evening gowns for quite reasonable prices.
Of the local food products, there's the renowned sun-dried olive paste and Assyrtiko dry wine. Beer drinkers might try a local concoction brewed right on the island that also has a red variation. Tasty and not too heavy. And so we leave you with that, till next time.

Santorini | Emporio Village
Emporio Village is the largest of villages in Santorini, 12 kilometres from Fira, the main town of island, and is perched on the foothills of Mount Prophitis Ilias, the highest peak on the island. There's a regular bus service from Fira. Or you may wish to rent a 4-wheel-bike and keep it your own schedule.
Emporio Villages in Greek means the place of commerce, which possibly was back in the old days.
Santorini has several large inland villages that were in the past thriving marketplaces for the island's produce, and still attract those who seek a bit of peace away from the tourist track.

Santorini | Walking in Fira
Walking in Fira, Santorini -

Fira, the main community on Santorini, is fairly easy to get around on foot, as it's mostly concentrated just below the rim of the highest point of the main cliff, about 300 metres above the sea. Of course, the most spectacular part of walking in Fira is centered around the view, and that is where the poshest shops, bars and restaurants are concentrated.
Just ten minutes' stroll on the main path brings you to the terminus of the cable car that carries you down to the Old Port below. It's either that or ride a donkey, as walking up and down is only for the very athletic.
That said, though, the path carries on northwards, beyond the limits of Fira, always with the view of the Caldera -- or volcano crater -- on the left. It rounds the spurs of the mountain at Imerovigli, carrying on to Ia, which an intrepid hiker can get to in about two hours.
On a stroll through Fira, there's something interesting around every corner, which you will see in more activities videos. Walking in Fira seeing the caldera Santorini is exciting.
Santorini | The Archaeological Museum
Not many people know that the official name of Santorini is Thera. It's named after an ancient Spartan named Theras who fled here from a family intrigue and decided to set up a colony.
Not surprisingly, ancient Thera flourished in the flat and fertile eastern part of the island, for about a thousand years. You can see the ruins at the foot of a hill that rises out of the plain near the coast.
You might be interested to know that in classical times Thera was contested between the great powers of Athens and Sparta. The museum's exhibits include prehistoric pottery, archaic statuettes and Roman-era glassware.
The Thera museum can be combined with a day at the beach at nearby Kamari, basking on the fine dark volcanic sand, and then after sunset, stroll down to the Nihteri taverna for fish with everything. About the wine -- we'll come back to that.

NEW NEW SANTORINI IN SECONDS

Santorini Volcano, Greece
Santorini's volcanic activity during the past 2-500,000 years has been dominated by very large explosive eruptions at intervals of few tens of thousands of years. The most recent of this type occurred at around 1613 BC and is known as the so-called Minoan eruption. The late Bronze Age eruption, one of the biggest known volcanic explosions in younger time,- and one of the most studied, but still most mysterious eruptions of all time-, devastated not only Santorini, but had a deep impact on the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean. Perhaps it even had serious world-wide effects and changed history.
Still today, one can see its deposits, the characteristic, tens of meters thick layer of white pumice and ash that blankets most of the surface of the island group. The eruption changed the shape of the island itself dramatically: it is now believed that before the eruption, it had the shape of an almost complete ring that enclosed an earlier, shallower caldera. Then, large sections of island collapsed into the emptied magma chamber after the eruption, literally disappearing under the sea. The ring-island was breached to the W and NW, and the caldera was significantly widened and deepened.
The Minoan eruption devastated the rich, highly developed economic center, that Santorini was at that time. Since 1969, intense archaeological excavations have brought to light an important Cycladic/Minoan town which had been buried beneath the volcanic ash for almost 4000 years. Although it appears that people had time to evacuate their island in time before the eruption, carrying most of their goods with them, the findings from Akrotiri are impressive: especially, they include well-preserved and magnificent wall paintings, ceramics and other objects. Thanks to the work of numerous archaeologists, a new light was thrown on an important prehistoric period and culture. The spectacular discovery even induced continuing speculations that relate the volcanic destruction of Santorini to the legend of the sunken Atlantis.

Santorini 2009
Santorini | Getting to the Island
There are two main routes into Santorini: by sea and by air. By air is fairly straightforward. The island has an airport on the flat eastern side which receives a string of domestic and international flights every day. There are two or three domestic flights a day from Athens. Most international holiday flights come in direct from European and Asian capitals. The return flight from Athens -- just over half an hour each way -- is substantially less for those who plan ahead rather than purchasing during peak season.
For those with time to spare, the sea trip from Piraeus is rather more rewarding. The fast ferry takes around six hours, and is slightly more expensive than the regular boat, which arrives at Athinio port some ten hours after departure from Piraeus, after touching at Paros, Naxos and Ios, so you get something of an island-hopping experience as well. Ferry fares are not expensive, and you can enjoy traveling in well-appointed business class on the slower ferries for quite less than the airplane equivalent.

Santorini | Pyrgos Town
Santorini | Pyrgos Town: The word pyrgos in Greek means tower or castle, and it well describes the Pyrgos village, which is set upon one of the heights of Mount Prophitis Ilias, the loftiest mountain on Santorini.
The Pyrgos Village is very scenic and is perfect for photo shooting. Every corner has something to offer. The best time is in the afternoon where the sun isn't so high. The town although is high in altitude, during summer time can be very hot.
