The history of the Town of Kapurthala goes back as early as the 11th Century when it is said to have been founded by Rana Kapur, a scion of the ruling house of Jaisalmer (Rajasthan)[citation needed][discuss]. The present royal family of Kapurthala is descended from Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, a contemporary of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah, who by his intelligence and bravery made himself the leading Sikh of his day.[2][3]
At one time it held possessions on both sides of the Sutlej, and also in the Bari Doab. The cis-Sutlej estates and scattered tracts in the Bari Doab were forfeited owing to the hostility of the chief in the First Sikh War; but the latter were afterwards restored in recognition of the loyalty of Raja Randhir Singh during the mutiny of 1857, when he led a contingent to Oudh which did good service. He also received a grant of land in Oudh, 700 m² in extent, yielding a gross rental of 89,000. In Oudh, however, he exercises no sovereign powers, occupying only the status of a large landholder, with the title of Raja-i-Rajagan.[4]

Raja Sir Jagatjit Singh, K.C.S.I., was born in 1872, succeeded his father in 1877, and attained his majority in 1890. During the Tirah expedition of 1897-98 the Kapurthala imperial service infantry took a prominent part. The territory is crossed by the railway from Jalandhar to Amritsar. The state has a large export trade in wheat, sugar, and cotton. The hand-painted cloths and metal-work of Phagwara are well known.

Jalandhar is a city in the north-western Indian state of Punjab.
Jalandhar is the oldest city in Punjab. In recent years it has seen rapid urbanisation and developed into a highly industrialised centre of commercial activity. Situated on the Grand Trunk Road, it is a major rail and road junction, and is 144 km northwest of the state capital, Chandigarh. The city was known as Prasthala in the time of the Mahabharata and as Jullundur in British India.
Jalandhar and Multan are the oldest surviving cities of the Punjab region, with historical references as far back as A.D. 100. The Jalandhar Doab (the region surrounding the city between the Beas and Sutlej rivers) also marked the easternmost territory of the empire of Alexander the Great. He erected giant altars in this area to mark the eastern most extent of his empire and also founded a city named Alexandria in the vicinity and left many Macedonian veterans there. Now it is known as Jalandhar.
Jalandhar is reputed as one possible site (beside Kashmir) of the Fourth Buddhist Council, convened by the Kushan emperor Kanishka (r. 127-151 CE).
Jalandhar City Railway Station is on the Delhi-Amritsar Railway line. It is connected with direct trains to Delhi, 375 km (233 mi), Bhopal, Calcutta, Mumbai, Puri, Nagpur, Jammu Tawi and Deluxe Express to Mumbai, Shatabadi Express to Delhi, Utkal Express to Puri and Howrah Mail to Calcutta.

HUSSAINIWALA BORDER RETREAT PARADE BETWEEN INDIA & PAKISTAN
India-Pakistan holds retreat parade at three locations on the western borders of India.
Most famous of them is the Wagah-Atari Border parade at Amritsar.
Retreat parade at HUSSAINIWALA border at Ferozpur has its own charm.
And some would argue that its even better than the Wagah border parade.
Hussainiwala border parade arena has a big amphitheater wherein the two forces performs the parade on the same platform unlike in Wagah where parade is separated by the border gates. The display by the forces (BSF-Pak Rangers) is visible to the crowds of the both sides.

Since 1970 there has been a Retreat Ceremony at the border crossing every day at 6 pm, similar to the Wagah border ceremony. Attendees are seated in close proximity here, as compared to Wagah where crowds are kept far apart. And unlike the jingoistic display at Wagah which draws nationalistic tourists from all over India and Pakistan, the Hussainiwala ceremony is a more intimate ceremony attended mostly by local Punjabis from either side of the border. As a result, the atmosphere is not as tense, and Indian and Pakistani attendees often smile and wave to one another, and even cheer for each other's guards as they perform the border spectacle.
