Sailing the Aeolian Islands - Sicily, Italy
Rarely do trips make life changing impacts like this one did. Sailing through the Aeolian Islands, off the coast of Sicily aka Sicilia was one of the best trips we've ever taken.
Places to see in ( Milazzo - Italy )
Places to see in ( Milazzo - Italy )
Hardly Sicily's prettiest town, Milazzo is hemmed in on its eastern perimeter by industrial development that can make even the most open-minded visitor run for the nearest hydrofoil. Indeed, the prime reason for setting foot in this town is to get to the Aeolian Islands. But, away from the refineries and busy dock, Milazzo has a pretty Borgo Antico (Old Town), and the isthmus that juts out to the north is an area of great natural beauty dotted with rocky coves, well worth a visit for those with time to spare.
Castle of Milazzo. Begun by the Arabs, enlarged by the Normans, restored and strengthened by Frederick II, it is surrounded by walls with round towers built under Alfonso V of Aragon, with a Gothic portal dating from the 14th century. Near the castle are the ruins of the fourteenth-century palace of the grand jury and the old cathedral (1603) probably built on a design by architect Camillo Camillians.
The Old Town includes the fortified citadel and medieval quarters of Milazzo, and contains numerous religious buildings. On entering the old town you first find the Shrine of St. Francesco di Paola, dating from the 18th century and built on the site of a pre-existing church of the 15th century. A little further into Milazzo old town you can see the 16th century Palace of the Viceroy, further enriched in the 18th century with baroque balconies.
Continue along Via S. Domenico to see the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Built in the 16th century, the church was rebuilt in the 18th century at which time the interior was decorated with stucco and frescoes by Domenico Giordano (c.1760 - 1820). The road leads on to Milazzo Castle, with its imposing Spanish walls - these are the outermost and largest of the three sets of walls. The building was begun in the first half of the 16th century under Emperor Charles V of Spain (1500-1558), by the viceroy of Sicily, Duke Ettore Pignatelli (died in 1579), and it was completed towards the end of the century.
In Cumbo Borgia Street is the New Cathedral, a building dating back to the 1930s in which there are some valuable paintings by Antonello de Saliba, and other religious paintings attributed to Antonio Giuffrè (14th century), a painter of the Antonello da Messina (1429-1479) school. In lower Milazzo there is a scenic promenade along the seafront. if you continue along the waterfront and through the district of Vaccarella you can follow the panoramic road that leads to Cape Milazzo and towards the Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua.
The ferry port for travelling to the Aeolian islands is found at Milazzo and these islands are a wonderful mix of sea, beach and volcano. Lipari is the busiest of the seven islands. Filicudi and Panarea are also popular outings. Art lovers will want to visit Castroreale and the Pinacoteca art gallery housed in an an ancient church.
Milazzo borders with the municipalities of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Merì and San Filippo del Mela. Milazzo is the point of reference of a vaste territory, from Villafranca Tirrena to Patti (over 200,000 inhabitants). Is also, an important centre of the Strait of Messina Metropolitan Area (who also includes areas of Reggio Calabria), with the nearby town Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. Located at the base of a peninsula that juts into the Tyrrhenian Sea with a small promontory, the town is 43 kilometres (27 mi) from the city of Messina.
Alot to see in Milazzo such as :
Castle of Milazzo
the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
the Baroque Church of the Holy Crucifix (1629), housing a wooden canopy from the 18th century and a wooden crucifix from the early 17th century.

Sailing Around Sicily With MedSailors
Sailing around Sicily’s Aeolian Islands, hiking Stromboli Volcano, bathing in mud baths in Vulcano, and chilled out yacht life – here’s the lowdown on MedSailors’ new route in Sicily, Italy.
The new route in Sicily starts from Portorosa Marina on the mainland, then heads north to visit six of the Aeolian Islands – Vulcano, Isola Filicudi, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, and Lipari. Each island is different and offers specific activities. There’s Salina with its beautiful colourful buildings and lush vineyards, epic volcano Stromboli – complete with lava eruptions, and Panarea – the poshest of the islands, known for smart restaurants and a yachtie elite! None of the islands are too far from each other, meaning you’ll usually spend the morning out at sea (and swimming), then arrive after lunch to explore the land.
The highlight of the week was hiking to the top of Stromboli to see the lava erupting. It was a challenging hike but one of those experiences that is so rewarding.
Salina was beautiful, with the chance to go wine tasting at Hauner vineyard and pretty streets to explore.
Vulcano was weird and wonderful, with its bubbling sulphur mud baths and jutting rocks.
At times though, it was the sailing element of the trip that was the most pleasurable. The views are stunning, and you see so much on the water you wouldn’t be able to see if you were driving around the islands or exploring on foot.
Thanks to MedSailors for inviting me to sail around Sicily. As always opinions are my own.

Places to see in ( Lipari - Italy ) Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano
The Luigi Bernabò Brea Regional Aeolian Archaeological Museum is located in the castle complex that dominates the island of Lipari and is named after Luigi Bernabò Brea , a great archaeologist and Superintendent of Eastern Sicily (1939-1973).
The museum was built after World War II and contains, for the most part, archaeological finds from systematic excavation campaigns, conducted by archaeologists Luigi Bernabò Brea and Madeleine Cavalier , in the territory of the Aeolian Islands .
It consists of over 40 rooms, located in different buildings of the Castle complex, and divided into several sections:
Prehistoric .
Classical section - dedicated to the materials of the archaic, classical [1] , Roman and Byzantine age. Hall of the subaqueous archeology.
Epigraphic - memorial stones and stele of the Greco-Roman necropolis of Lipari
Of the smaller islands - prehistoric finds from the smaller islands ( Punta Milazzese to Panarea , Capo Graziano to Filicudi )
Vulcanology - geomorphology and volcanism of the Aeolian Islands.
Paleontological - of the quaternary
in which are exposed architectural structures, examples of sculpture in marble and stone, funerary objects, vases, cippi, tombstones and stone sarcophagi that testify to the life of the polis and the evolution of the cult of the dead . Also ceramics of various types and shapes, theatrical masks and clay statues.
Then there are two separate sections of the museum located on the islands of Panarea and Filicudi and many materials are exhibited in the Civic Antiquarium of Salina. The materials, dated from prehistory to our days in Italian and English , which makes usable the knowledge of the same contextualized to the place of discovery.

“VOLCANO of VULCANO ISLAND” Aeolian Islands, Italy (Meditation on the Vulcano – Sound!)
The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus. The island’s inhabitants are known as Aeolians. The Aeolian Islands are a popular tourist destination in the summer and attract up to 200,000 visitors annually. The largest island is Lipari and the islands are sometimes referred to as the Lipari Islands or Lipari group. The other islands include Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo.
Vulcano is a small volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 25 km (16 mi) north of Sicily and the southernmost of the eight Aeolian Islands. It is 21 km2 (8 sq mi) in area, rises to 501 m (1,644 ft) above sea level, and contains several volcanic centres, including one of four active non-submarine volcanoes in Italy.
Mythology The Romans believed that Vulcano was the chimney of the god Vulcan's workshop and therefore named the island after him. The island had grown due to his periodic clearing of cinders and ashes from his forge. The earthquakes that either preceded or accompanied the explosions of ash were considered to be due to Vulcan making weapons for Mars and his armies to wage war.

Places to see in ( Marsala - Italy ) Egadi Islands
Places to see in ( Marsala - Italy ) Egadi Islands
The Egadi Islands (Isole Egadi in Italian, also called Aegadian Islands in English) are three islands off the western coast of Sicily, close to Trapani and Marsala, and conveniently located for Trapani Airport (a Ryanair base). The islands make an attractive holiday destination.
The Egadi Islands are not as dramatic as the volcanic Aeolian Islands, nor breathtakingly beautiful and exclusive like Capri. Their appeal is more low-key, but this, along with their accessibility, gives them their own brand of charm. Visitors can relax in a picturesque island piazza on Favignana with a cheap glass of wine, see prehistoric cave-paintings on the little picture-postcard island of Levanzo, or step further from the hectic world on Marettimo, for a leisurely holiday based around swimming and diving in the clear water around the coast, or hill-walking in the island's interior. There is a protected marine reserve around the islands, whose coastal waters contain caves, shipwrecks and rich marine life.
The Egadi Islands aren't much known to non-Italians, and outside the peak Italian holiday period of July-August, tourism isn't too intrusive. There are services for tourists - good places to stay, restaurants, cafes, shops, bike hire and boat trips - but you'll still encounter a very authentic and welcoming local atmosphere. It is really quite remarkable how easily and quickly you find yourself in a different world: pottering past the rickety fish stalls where Favignana's fishermen sell their catch, or sipping wine at a cafe table as a local wedding spills out from the Chiesa Madrice into the wide piazza, where small children play on their bicycles.
The most obvious activity is simply to do some island-hopping, and visit each of the three islands, pottering around their villages and sampling their food and drink. you can tour the islands on scheduled ferry services, but you'll also, during tourist season, have the option of taking boat trips, often informally run and marketed at the quayside by ageing skippers, to circle the islands' coastlines, visit grottoes, catch a lift to beaches, or enjoy a cruise with lunch and some swimming opportunities. 'Pescaturismo', which is basically fishing tourism, can also be arranged at the fishing harbours, and tourists can have the adventure of accompanying a local fisherman on a fishing trip.
Cycling is a popular pastime and practical way to get about on Favignana, where you'll find bargain bicycle hire rates. Scooters, buggies and cars are also available for rent on the island; shops hiring out all these vehicles are easy to find right by the port in Favignana. There aren't any big sandy beaches on the islands, which have quite rocky shores, but there are popular coves for swimming, and some smaller beaches with sand. As well as swimming and sunbathing, the more active can go snorkelling and diving in the crystalline protected waters. Marettimo is particularly popular with divers, but diving excursions can be organised on all of the islands.
Marettimo is mountainous and offers some serious opportunities for hiking up slopes, through wild flowers, and to ruins, as well as shorter walks. Favignana is mostly flat, with roads and lanes to walk along, but also has one steep ridge crowned by a historic fortress; this makes a scenic though strenuous excursion. Levanzo is hilly with walks along the coastline and over its rural interior.
