Greenland - Since 8 years I'm traveling to this magical country. Today quiet and untouched places are becoming more and more rare. On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.

Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 70 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Charlotte Lake Hike

This was a 2 day lightweight backpacking trip from Roads End in Cedar Grove to Charlotte Lake off the JMT for an overnight and return. About 6,000' of altitude gain outbound and 36 miles round trip. Rick Sanger is the Ranger at Charlotte Lake. He is mentioned in the The Last Season and my book Seeking the Lost: Stories of Search and Rescue. I had to get the mother bears attention since it did not notice I was on the trail headed toward her. At first she began walking toward me. I stood my ground and she escorted her cub the other way. I would not recommend doing this in two days unless you are experienced, fit and sound. It could be done with an outbound and an inbound stay near Junction Meadow with an overnight at Charlotte Lake. Bear canisters are required.

9-19-2018: It's been a long time since Grace and I have been one a primitive camping trip and we always wanted to return to Zion National park to hike the Narrows. After gathering a group of adventurers, we make our way to South West Utah. One of our friends that met with us is Gabriel from the MtnRoo who was also in the episode of Subaru's Launch Control. He mentioned that he spectated a Rally Race, but I had no idea he was part of an episode of my favorite shows.

We spent much of the day hiking the Narrows and snoozing on the Zion tram. Dinner at the Zion Canyon Brewing Company was impressive. I never had a burger so tasty! Onion rings perfect! After a fun filled day in the National park we had to race the setting sun to our campsite, which was on top of a cliff of all places. It wasn't until morning that we could truly appreciate the aww-inspiring view our camp had to offer. We lazed around until noon and then made our way to the toquerville falls. The road was rough... did my stock height Subaru make it? Watch the video to find out.
