Backpacking Europe: Our Itinerary!
Shoutout to Crystal who requested this video! We go over where we went and the route we took while backpacking Europe. It wasn't the initial path we were expecting to take!
We flew from Edinburgh to Amsterdam, Holland then took a night bus to Berlin, Germany. In between Berlin and Prague we stopped at Dresden, Germany. After Prague, Czech Republic, we stopped for a day and night in Vienna, Austria and stopped at Bratislava, Slovakia before spending four days in Budapest, Hungary. Next up was Zagreb (the capital city of Croatia) before heading north to Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana. After all of those cities we were craving nature and found it at Lake Bled and Lake Bohjin (also in Slovenia). After seeing how close we were to Italy and how well we were staying on budget we decided to throw in some major Italian cities and headed to Florence, followed by Rome! After taking a train to Ancona we hitched a ride on a ferry to Patras, Greece. From Patras we went to Athens and took a ferry to three islands (Crete, Santorini, and Ios). After the islands we were back to Athens to explore the ancient sites before flying home.

Indian masons working at a construction site
An old fashioned inefficient form of construction typical in many parts of India. Workers do purely manual labour lifting bricks and laying them out for an outer wall, using a hand blended cement mix. The mixed cement is carried in round containers.
Spiralling costs have forced construction workers to ask for more.
N. Desingu is a helper in the construction industry. He is paid Rs.350 a day as wages. Apart from this, he gets travel charges and two cups of tea a day from his contractor. “Until last year I was earning Rs.250, but as prices have shot up and my elder son is joining college this year and I asked for a hike and the contractor agreed to give one. I also work overtime so that I can send a considerable amount to my family in Vandavasi,” he said.
Many labourers such as Mr. Desingu travel home from Chennai every week to meet their families and review ongoing agricultural work in their farmland. If there is work to be done on the farm, workers such as him and his co-worker Settu (24) stay back at home and do not come for work at the construction site. “When labourers take a break, it is a headache for contractors. We either scout for labour or agree to pay more to our own men, which is one factor that hikes up rates in the industry,” said P.Karunakaran, a building contractor from Poonamallee.
L.Moorthi, former Chairman of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Builders Association of India, said that the number of people coming from the villages to work in the construction industry has gone down. “Women prefer to work in house-keeping in MNCs. The boys too prefer to take up jobs that pay less as cable TV operators or as courier delivery personnel. Also there is pay parity in the villages and people no longer need to come to the city to earn.”
Mr. Settu said the spiralling costs of essential commodities forced him to work overtime. “I need to send money to my mother in our village. I work on Sundays, too. When the contractor gets big projects and has a deadline to meet, we work day and night continuously for days together, without a break.”
Over the last two years the percentage of labour costs in the construction industry has gone up. Mr. Moorthi said that in multi-storeyed buildings labour charge takes up 20 per cent of the total cost. In small constructions labour costs can go upto 30 to 40 per cent and if old houses are repaired or maintenance works are taken up, it goes upto as much as 125 per cent. “This shortage is expected to only get acute as the wards of the masons and labourers are getting educated and not many people are choosing mason or carpentry in ITI courses,” he said. The shortage of skilled labour coupled with the cost of labour is driving many contractors to think twice before taking up construction work. Of the labourers available for construction, sources in the industry say that those from Bihar and Andhra Pradesh constitute around 90 per cent.

Driving over Naini Bridge, Allahabad
Holy River Yamuna (the main tributary of river Ganges) separates Allahabad from its satellite town Naini. Earlier the city was connected with Naini by an old rail/road bridge. It was felt that this bridge will not be able to cater the needs of ever increasing traffic between two sides of the river. Moreover, the development of Naini as industrial town has also created traffic pressure on then existing bridge. Keeping this in view and the future requirements of national waterway, traffic plying between Kolkata & Allahabad and the aesthetics of the holy Sangam city where pilgrims from all over the world come to have a holy dip, a concrete cable stayed four laned road bridge was constructed. NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) has constructed this bridge at the cost of 300 crores. Total length of the bridge is 1510mts & width 26mts. The bridge connects old GT Road (NH-2) at Allahabad end & NH-27 towards Naini side. This bridge has added a new attraction point to Allahabad city & is worth watching during the night.
Allahabad, also known as Prayag, is a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Allahabad District. Allahabad is the seventh most populous city in Uttar Pradesh, with an estimated population of 1.74 million living in the city and district area. In 2011, it was ranked the world's 130th fastest growing city. Allahabad city is the largest commercial center in the state; it also has the second-highest per capita income and the third greatest GDP in the state (following Kanpur). Allahabad is also known as the city of prime ministers because post independence seven out of 13 prime minister of India belonged to Allahabad (Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Gulzarilal Nanda, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandra Shekhar). All these seven leaders were either born in Allahabad, were alumni of Allahabad University, or were elected from a constituency in Allahabad.
The city's original name—Prayaga, or place of offerings, comes from its position at the sacred union of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. It is the second-oldest city in India and plays a central role in the Hindu scriptures. The city contains many temples and palaces. Allahabad is located in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh. It is bounded by Pratapgarh in the north, Bhadohi in the east, Rewa in the south and Kaushambi in the west. Its area is 63.07 km2 (24.35 sq mi). Allahabad contains many suburbs. While the city and surroundings are governed by several municipalities, a large portion of Allahabad District is governed by the Allahabad City Council. The demonym of Allahabad is Allahabadi.
