Fun Free Things To Do In New Orleans
So you are going to New Orleans. Well you are in for a treat. It is one of America’s most interesting cities. Rich in culture, food and scandal. It’s got something that will interest every member of your family.
We went without the kids this time so that was a different traveling experience.
Go to the French district. The French Quarter is the city’s historic heart, famous for its vibrant nightlife and colorful buildings with cast-iron balconies. Crowd-pleasing Bourbon Street features jazz clubs, Cajun eateries and raucous bars serving potent cocktails.( They mean seriously raucous bars, we were there at 4 in the afternoon the bars and streets were packed with those already intoxicated.) Quieter streets lead to the French Market, with gourmet food and local crafts, and to Jackson Square where street performers entertain in front of soaring St. Louis Cathedral. We loved visiting all the art galleries. They were incredible. My husband and I slow danced to jazz music in an art gallery looking down on French quarters. A romantic moment to keep the spark alive.
Visit a cemetery. Only in New Orleans, which is unique in so many ways, could cemeteries be major tourist attractions. However, because the city is built on a swamp, the deceased have to be buried above ground here in elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. The folks we were traveling with were not excited about this step in our plans but once we arrived at the cemeteries they were enthralled. The most popular is Lafayette cemetery.
Visit City Park, a 1,300-acre public park in New Orleans, Louisiana, is the 87th largest and 20th-most-visited urban public park in the United States. City Park is approximately 50% larger than Central Park in New York City, the municipal park recognized by Americans nationwide as the archetypal urban greenspace. The couple we were traveling with had never seen turtles in the wild, we’re from Utah people, the park was full of them! We even saw people doing some early morning yoga.
Mardi Gras World is a museum of Mardi Gras Floats. You can see people actually working on floats there! There is a large section of it that is free with some parts you need to pay for. We accidently stumbled into the paying section without a ticket, not clear signage and saw a good portion of it before realizing we weren’t supposed to be there. It was awesome! Great photoops. Guests tour the 300,000 square foot working warehouse where floats are made for Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans. Mardi Gras World is located along the Mississippi River, next to the Morial Convention Center.
Not free but eat some beignets at Cafe DuMont. We polled from our social media networks and this was one of the major attractions that kept coming up. We got ours to go and listened to jazz music while eating ours in Jackson Square. My only regret is we weren’t hugrier. So many great things to eat in New Orleans and so little stomach to fit it in.
To get around I would recommend Uber and Lyft to get from the airport plus the Street Car. The streetcar is extremely convenient getting you to all main points of attraction. Even though we got lost a few times on it the system was fairly straightforward.
Well there you have it. Thank you for watching our adventure. Now go out there, make your own and tell me all about it. Until next time. Keep traveling.
