Things NOT to Do on a Kenyan Safari
A Kenyan safari is a bucket-list experience, but it’s a serious undertaking that should be approached with care and caution. If you are planning to visit Kenya and its untamed landscapes, be sure to keep the following safari tips in mind.
1. Don’t Leave the Vehicle
While that sleeping lion might seem yards and yards away, don’t attempt to get a good close-up by leaving the safety of your vehicle. You would be risking your life. Maintaining a healthy respect for these beasts may be the only thing that prevents you from becoming a snack on the savanna.
2. Don’t Shoot Unless it’s with a Camera
No magnificent creature should be fodder for trophy hunters. Sport hunting was banned in Kenya back in 1977, but wealthy tourists sometimes get around the red tape. Don’t be that douchebag. Photo safaris are the way to go.
3. Don’t Forget the Meds
All Kenyan game parks are in the malaria zone. Medications are not 100% effective, so you should use insect repellent and sleep under nets for a mosquito-free setting. Don’t take chances with mosquitoes. No animal kills more humans than this tiny buzzing beast.
4. Don’t Visit Garissa County
Kenya has gotten ugly recently. Atrocities aren’t necessarily directed at safari tourists, but nobody wants to get caught in the crossfire. Do your research before booking a trip to the hot zones.
5. Don’t Facebook
Selfies and wild animals do not mix. You don’t really want to spend your safari adventure staring at a cell phone screen, do you? Be present for every wondrous moment.
6. Don’t Smoke in Public
Since 2008, you’re not legally permitted to smoke in restaurants, shopping malls, theaters, hotel lobbies and grounds, even in rural lodges. You can be fined 50,000 to three million Kenya shillings or face six months to three years imprisonment.
7. Don’t Offend the Locals
You can expect to encounter customs and practices that are completely foreign to you. Do your best not to grimace or complain to the locals about their customs, lifestyle or the foods they eat. Embrace the opportunity to open your mind to cultural differences.
8. Don’t Litter
Don’t toss your used Kleenex out the car window. The wilderness tends to be a sacred place for your guides so don’t offend them. Be respectful and always bring your litter back to camp with you to dispose of it appropriately.
9. Don’t Throw Food to the Animals
You should not offer food to any animals. It’s not good for any of the animals on the safari to learn to equate food with humans. Even though you just want to be friendly and connect with them, keep your food to yourself.
10. Don’t Take the Experience for Granted
By maintaining your sense of awe, you’ll get more out of your vacation, becoming one of the most amazing travel experiences of your lifetime. While you might be sweaty and miss the comforts of home, don’t lose your sense of wonder while traveling in Kenya.
Where do you want to know what not to do in next?

Garissa, city in Kenya, Tana river, predominantly Muslim, food aid programs,
This is the main town of Garissa district. Garissa is a predominantly Muslim (Somali) town. Garissa lies on the Tana River and is the geographic gateway to the interior of the northeastern province. It is a hub in the ongoing humanitarian food aid program into the northeast of Kenya.
Get in[edit]
There are daily bus services from Mombasa to Garissa. The road to Garissa is hard surfaced and in good condition. By car, the journey takes about 4 to 5 hours. Garissa has an airfield but no scheduled flights
Get around[edit]
Garissa is small enough to get around on foot, but taxis can easily be hired. Beyond Garissa itself the roads are unsurfaced and frequently become impassable even by 4-wheel drive vehicles during the rains.
Transport from Garissa is good if heading for Nairobi. However, when trying to reach the coastal towns, such as Malindi or Mombasa, be aware that transport is very limited, with buses leaving only at 5 AM. The Garissa - Mombasa road currently has an unsurfaced gap of around 60km, on which travel is fairly difficult without a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Plan at least a day to travel this route.
See[edit][add listing]
Garissa is off the tourist trail and offers insight into the Somali way of life without crossing into Somalia itself. The town has attractive side streets with traditional brightly-painted shop fronts. Out of town the landscape is thorn scrub. Wildlife to be glimpsed from the road includes eagles, dikdik, baboons, giraffes, warthogs, garnoogs and meerkats. Large herds of camels are often seen being moved by families between seasonal village sites.
Do[edit][add listing]
You can go shopping at suuq mugdi ( the dark market as it is known locally). Lots of stuff and all the prices are negotiable. Gym there is one at Jihan centre. You can also kick some football at Garissa primary football field in the evening that is when it is mostly alive. You can also play volleyball right there. Giraffe centre - there is a giraffe sanctuary where you can take pictures of giraffes and admire them. it is located south of Garissa probable 5 km from Nomad hotel going towards Korkora.
Buy[edit][add listing]
You can buy traditional Somali curio items such as dhiil, ameel and an array of calabashes
Eat[edit][add listing]
Most internationals eat at the Nomad Hotel and there are several small hotel cafes around town.
Drink[edit][add listing]
This is a mainly Muslim town so alcohol is not widely sold. The Maji Club opposite the Nomad Hotel is the most popular gathering place for non-Muslim locals and visitors to town. There are also quite a number of other places to socialize and have a cold tusker, like the Government Guest House, Jamhuri Club and Town Club. There is a new classic hotel on board.
Sleep[edit][add listing]
The Nomad Hotel is the most popular accommodation for visiting internationals including UN and other aid agency staff. There are two other hotels in the main street (one is the Halgan) that offer modern air conditioned rooms with en suite facilities for less than US$10 per night. There are also Hidig and Ainulqamar which offer good accommodation, meals, and services.
Almond. Brand new five star hotel with 75 modern air-conditioned rooms with WIFI, swimming pool, gymnasium. edit

MagicalKenya - Tana River Delta
On the remote shores of Kenya's far Northern coast, the mighty waters of the Tana River meet the sea in a massive River Delta. This isolated region is a truly unique location, where the great inland wilderness of the North meets the beauty of the coast. The Tana delta is a place of spectacular panoramic views, encompassing a scrubland teeming with game and birds and the endless rolling sands of deserted beaches.
Here you can experience the best of both worlds, spending the morning exploring a river filled with hippo and crocodile by canoe, and swimming in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean in the afternoon. This is the perfect destination for those looking for a safari with a difference.
