A Tourist's Guide to Georgetown, Guyana
Country number 9 of 10 on my Caribbean island hop by air.
I fly into Guyana, on the northern coast of South America. Then disaster happens - I break my arm and end up visiting a local hospital.
Stitched up and in a sling, I still manage to see some of the sights of Georgetown, Guyana's colourful capital city.
10 Things to Do in Guyana

Guyana is one of those destinations you wouldn't think as first on the list. However, this Caribbean country will surprised you for sure. Have a look of the things you can do there.
1) Spot the local wildlife
Not only the landscapes are beautiful, the fauna of Guyana is impressive. You should go there and it will surprise you with unique animals such as an anteater, a giant river otters, a harpy eagle, cock-of-the rock birds, black caymans and even a jaguar.
2) Go hiking
Althought the weather is very hot and wet, it's still a must do in Guyana. You can go to the Dolomites. Sometimes it has hard paths that will test your resistance. But in the end it will worth it. After a long day of hiking, you can always reward you with a nice meal, right?
3) Go on a boat ride
The best way to move around Guyana is by boat. If you go to the Rupununi rivers you won't regret it at all. Its local flora and fauna will amaze you as well as the beautiful landscapes that will surround you all the way, and make you feel alive.
4) Explore Georgetown
It's capital is a place you shouldn't miss. I's a colorful city full of local markets such as Bourda and Starbroek Market. Also, St. George’s Cathedral is one of the top Guyana tourist attractions and a must see. Plus a lot of more places to see. So, don't forget about it.
5) Walk through the forest
Well, taking into account its big jungle, of course, we recomendo you to go there and explore it. For sure, it will be kind of a new feeling for you. Inside the jungle birdwatching is a must do. But don't forget about the insects and muddy ground. Go prepared or don't go. We warned you...
6) Don't forget the canopy of Iwokrama
The Iwokrama Rainforest is a great way to appreciate the nature. You'll find a series of suspension bridges hoisted 30 meters above the forest floor from where where you could take the best pictures ever. The starting point is located at about 1 km from the lodge, via a walk in the forest and a staircase of around 160 steps.
7) Go to Kaieteur Falls
These are nothing like the Iguazu Falls or the Victoria Falls which are already wonderful. These falls will blow your mind with their spectacular views. The easiest way to go there is to taking a small plane in Georgetown, or you can always do a 5-day overland journey up river and go hiking.
8) Try the local food
Guyana melts different cultures in its food, such as Caribbean, Indian... and that will only get you licking your plate because of this absolutely delicious food full of tropical fruit and vegetables. However, keep in mind that the word “bake” in fact means fried dough of bread so that you won't have any misunderstanding
9) Sleep in hammocks
This is how most of the indigenous communities sleep and you should try it too. This experience is like being one to one with nature, alone in the dark, in harmony with the environment. It's one of the most special sensations that you can experience. Just do it!
10) Go to Rewa
Located in the North Rupununi region of Guyana, you must take an hour and 15 minutes flight on a 13 seater and a one hour boat ride along the Rupununi River, because it's completely isolated: no cars; no phone and no internet connection. But this is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Guyana to appreciate the wild nature and outdoor activities.
Would you ever thought you could do all of these in Guyana?

10. Shell Beach
A salt-sprayed section of the Guyana Coast, where the Atlantic rollers meld with the Caribbean currents out at sea and mangroves sprawl and crawl along the sands to the shore, Shell Beach is unquestionably the most famous beach in the country. But people don’t come to sunbathe and swim.
9. Parika
Tin shack docks and streets of purring scooters form the heart of riverside Parika; a down-to-earth port town on the banks of the Essequibo. At once gritty and welcoming, this gateway to the Essequibo Islands and river boat terminal is a fine place to sample the real, raw character of Guyana’s coast. Don’t miss the buzzing market that erupts in the town each Sunday.
8. Orinduik Falls
Carving their way out of the rocks that roll out from the Pakaraima Mountains in the western reaches of Guyana, just on the border with Venezuala, the Orinduik Falls offer something a little different to the country’s great cascading cataracts that fall from the top of its tepui hills.
7. Kaieteur National Park
The jewel of the Potaro-Siparuni region is a vast and expansive protected area that rises and falls with the great bulwark ridges of the Guyana tepuis. Dressed in thick, monkey-dotted, jaguar-stalked rainforests and covering a whopping 62,000 hectares, it’s hailed as the ecotourist hotspot for the country.
6. Port Mourant
Port Mourant is a small and welcoming little town on Guyana’s Atlantic coastal stretches, famed for its prolific output of cricketers (the sound of cork on willow is the usual backing track to daily life here!) and as the birthplace of the county’s revered ‘Father of the Nation’: Dr Cheddi Jagan. The down-to-earth spot is also a great place to glimpse Guyana’s agricultural heartland, with famer’s markets touting fresh fruits straight from the fields.
5. New Amsterdam
Since its foundation in the middle of the 18th century, New Amsterdam – the regional capital of East Berbice-Corentyne – has flitted from Dutch masters, who held sway over the lowland plantations here from the citadel of Fort Nassau up the valley (the remains of which can still be visited today), to the British, who endowed it with ground-breaking sanitation laws and attracted the likes of Cesar Castellani (perhaps the most famous architect to grace Guyana with his work).
4. Bartica
Straddling the channels of the Essequibo River where it joins the meanders of the Cuyuni and gives way to the wilder, less inhabited heartlands of Guyana, Bartica was once known as the ‘Gateway to the Interior’.
3. Kanuku Mountains
The great peaks of Kanuku are divided in two by the long and winding water channels of the Rupununi River, separated into a duo of diamond-shaped highland regions that are both famed for their wealth of mammalian species and old growth forests.
2. Linden
For almost a whole century, the settlement of Linden has been Guyana’s primary mining hub, with thousands of prospectors and miners making their way to this tropical spot to pull bauxite from the hills that line the Demerara River.
1. Georgetown
The place where so many Guyanese come to shop, work and play is actually something of a shadow of its former self. In fact, there’s no question that Georgetown’s golden age came with the height of the colonial powers here, a fact that its name – made in honour of England’s King George III – implies.
