Beneath Iran's Dusty Desert Lie Ancient Water Tunnels Still in Use | National Geographic
Thousands of years ago, Persians created an ingenious system to provide water across their arid landscape. They tapped aquifers at the heads of valleys and designed tunnels that utilized gravity to send the water to settlements. It's now estimated that the combined length of all the underground channels, known as qanats, in Iran is equivalent to the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

Iran Trip Part 02, Khaled Nabi, Bojnurd, Esfidan, Mashhad, Gonabad, Nijapoor
Don't go to Iran, that's what I heard many times. So it was clear to me to go to Iran :D
And it was a good desicion. I met so many nice people and so many beautiful places.
This trip was not a typical touristic trip. Everybody is going South after Tehran to Shiraz, Esfahan or Yazd.
That's why I decided to go North and I never regretted it :D
Don't go to Mashhad, almost all of my iranian friends said :D I've seen there so many nice things.
I never expected that Iranians love Mercedes that much.

The Persian Qanat, IR
Throughout the arid regions of Iran, agricultural and permanent settlements are supported by the ancient qanat system of tapping alluvial aquifers at the heads of valleys and conducting the water along underground tunnels by gravity, often over many kilometres. The eleven qanats representing this system include rest areas for workers, water reservoirs and watermills. The traditional communal management system still in place allows equitable and sustainable water sharing and distribution. The qanats provide exceptional testimony to cultural traditions and civilizations in desert areas with an arid climate.

Karez Canals | Ancient Underground Water System [Turpan / East Turkestan / China]
Karez systems are the crystallization of ancient people's diligence and intelligence. At its peak, this irrigation system exceeded 5,000 km (3,106 miles) and was also referred to as 'the underground Great Wall'. It is among the three ancient major irrigation projects with the other two being Ling Canal and Dujiangyan Irrigation Project.
Karez systems are the life source of Turpan. In a sense, without them, there would be no Turpan culture. According to records, the history of the karez in Xinjiang dates back to 103B.C. Currently there are still over 400 systems.
