Historic city center
Nizhny Novgorod (Russian: Ни́жний Но́вгород, IPA: [ˈnʲiʐnʲɪj ˈnovɡərət]), colloquially shortened to Nizhny, is a city in Russia and the administrative center (capital[15]) of Volga Federal District and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. From 1932 to 1990, it was known as Gorky (Го́рький, IPA: [ˈɡorʲkʲɪj]),[16] after the writer Maxim Gorky, who was born there.
The city is an important economic, transportation, scientific, educational and cultural center in Russia and the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region, and is the main center of river tourism in Russia. In the historic part of the city there is a large number of universities, theaters, museums and churches. Nizhny Novgorod is located about 400 km (250 mi) east of Moscow, where the Oka River empties into the Volga. Population: 1,250,619 (2010 Census);[8] 1,311,252 (2002 Census);[17] 1,438,133 (1989 Census).[18]
The city was founded in 4 February 1221[19] by Prince Yuri II of Vladimir. In 1612 Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky organized an army for the liberation of Moscow from the Poles. In 1817 Nizhny Novgorod became a great trade center of the Russian Empire. In 1896 at a fair, an All-Russia Exhibition was organized.
ROK Army K-2 tanks revealed for the first time taking part in river crossing exercise
육군, K-2흑표전차 도하훈련
Korea's land is criss-crossed by a vast number of rivers and streams, making it essential for the country's military to conduct regular river crossing exercises which involves setting up temporary bridges.
But we can skip that part when you have tanks that can tackle such obstacles without such aids.
Kim Hyun-bin introduces us to Korea's very own K-2 tanks.
Boasting a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour, Korea's K-2 tanks take over the road one by one displaying the country's infantry prowess.
Before infiltrating into the enemy's territory, the K-2s release smoke to camouflage themselves from the enemy's view.
Friendly troops cross first and the K-2s follow behind and cross the river, securing the premises.
This is a river crossing military exercise that featured ten K-200 armored vehicles and 30 K-2 tanks.
And the highlight of the drill was witnessing the K-2 units cross the river without the need of a temporary bridge, as the tank can submerge into rivers up to four meters deep.
Most of the Korea's rivers are four meters in depth so the K-2 can cross most rivers on the peninsula to tackle the enemy covertly.
The K-2 predecessor, the K1A1, also an amphibian infantry unit, required up to four hours to go underwater, and it was limited to depths of up to 2 meters. However, the K-2 can not only reach depths twice as much, but also at a fraction of the time, as it only requires 30 minutes for the tank to submerge,... making the K-2 more suitable in times of crisis where every second counts.
