Tour of Tunisia: Off Season Adventures
Epic South Tunisia Trip!
I finally got to visit the South of Tunisia and it was quite an adventure! Please join me on this 4-day, 3-night trip to the southern region of this beautiful country.
It will be difficult to fully summarize the trip as we did and saw so much! I will attempt to break it down by day.
Day 1
Early start in Tunis, then we took a 5-6-hour drive to Gabes, the largest southern city. We had some lunch and then on to Chenini Nehal where we explored the Oasis. A lust green valley in an otherwise arid landscape. We saw interesting caves and natural rock formations and walk through the oasis itself.
We then drove to the port where we boarded a barge that took us to the island of Djerba and we settled into our hotel for the night.
Day 2
Another early start as we went to the Guellala Museum where we took in art and history of the region and Tunisia. I got a life demonstration of a camel mill and saw sand art being made.
We then went to a ceramic and pottery shop where we got a demo on how they make the pottery, it was interesting.
Then we visited Djerbawood, a Jewish community that has similar architecture as Sidi Bou Said but they fill the white walls with street art.
We then went on to Houmet Souk, the main town of the island and we explore the Souk.
After a small break we visit the Parc Djerba Explore and when to the crocodile farm where we were amazed at the larger number of crocodile and the size of the park. It was great!!!
Day 3
After yet another early start, we boarded 4x4s and took to the roads. We used the rebuilt Roman road to get off the island where we came across a large salt flats created by an evaporated lake. It was amazing to see the flat salt go on for miles and looked like something out of a movie.
We drove all the way to Tataouin where we visited a few fortified Berber Granaries. The biggest being Ksar Ouled Soltane, then Ksar Ouled Dabbeb, Chenini, a large Berber village on a hill, I was totally blown away by this. And at last to Ksar Heddada, where some scenes from Star Wars, the Phantom Menace was filmed. We then drove through the canyons and valleys of the rocky desert and passed the town of Toujane, a Berber town still in use today.
Day 4
We left the hotel and went to Ksar Ghilane, where we saw the nature oasis and the water source that has the area so green in the middle of sand dunes. We got the traditional head wrap and then went for a camel ride on the Sahara Desert. Totally magnificent. Seeing the sands dunes up close and walking this environment was an experience I will never forget.
We then switched to quads and had fun riding in the desert until we had an accident that injured some members of our group. We then went back to Gabes to ensure they got medical treatment and they were okay in the end. We used the time to explore the Souk of Gabes and I saw up close and personal the spice venders.
In the end it was a great trip and something that will stay with me forever. The video is just a small summary and wish you all could experience it personally.
As always, thanks for watching!

Djerba, also transliterated as Jerba or Jarbah, is, at 514 square kilometres (198 sq mi), the largest island of North Africa, located in the Gulf of Gabes, off the coast of Tunisia. It had a population of 139,544 at the 2004 Census, while the latest official estimate (as at 1 July 2013) is 158,941.
Djerba has a mild climate and fertile soil. Its largest city is Houmt-Souk, with a population of around 65,000. Known for its beautiful beaches and dramatic sunsets, the island is a popular tourist destination, particularly with French, German and Italian tourists. It is one of the few remaining places in Tunisia where a Berber language is still spoken. Another factor drawing some tourists to Djerba is that, in 1977, the town of Ajim was used as the setting for the Mos Eisley exterior scenes in the first Star Wars movie.
Djerba is noted as a center of the Islamic sect Al-Ibadhiyah and for its Jewish minority, which has dwelt on the island for more than 2,500 years, although the Jewish population has declined significantly since 1967 due to emigration to Israel and France. With a large percentage of the community being direct Patrilineal descendants of Aaron the first high priest, the island was once known as the island of the Kohanim, Hebrew for the Jewish Priestly caste. The El Ghriba synagogue on Djerba is over 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest and most famous synagogues in the world.
