To try and cover more ground, let's see how the southwesternmost part of Korea is doing at this hour.
Hong Yoo is at Ttangkkeut Village in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do Province.
Yoo, there's a very good reason why so many people brave the cold and long travel to be there before the clock strikes 12.
Hi Daniel,
Hundreds of people are here at Ttangkkeut Village to wrap up this year and start the new year as this is the perfect place to see the sunset and the sunrise.
Just about a half hour ago, you could see the sun set over the horizon for the final time this year.
Hundreds of people have gathered here to see that amazing view and to enjoy the special festival prepared for today and tomorrow.
Over the past hour, singers, bands, and other artists have been performing on stage.
And at midnight is the highlight of the festival, the Ganggangsullae, an ancient Korean dance where people grab each other's hands and dance in a circle. In the past, women used to do this dance to wish for a fruitful year on important holidays such as Chuseok and Seollal.
But today, they will do the Ganggangsullae dance in a modern style with electronic dance music.

Fall Cultural Events

Nighttime tours of ancient palaces have become one of the hottest attractions in the city. Meanwhil, a ganggangsullae event in downtown Seoul has drawn more than 1,000 participants. Here is a look at a few of the cultural events being held this fall.

Bright lights are turned on one by one in Changdeokgung Palace as dusk descends on the city. When a full moon rises above the roof, subdued and elegant aspects of ancient palaces not seen during the daytime become visible. A forlorn sound of a Korean wind instrument fills the night with autumn sentiments. At that moment Gyeongbokgung Palace is lit up in soft lights. Visitors carry colorful lanterns and follow a path lit up by the moonlight. They enjoy dinner at the palace kitchen with the beautiful melodies of Korean traditional music flowing in the background.

[Soundbite] Ahn Yu-jin(Visitor) : It was a great experience to enjoy the king's meal at such a beautiful place.

A lavish pavilion is reflected on the pond. The autumn nightscape of Seoul seen from up there offers a different take on the city.

[Soundbite] Lee Jin-ah(Visitor) : It was so beautiful up there and Gyeonghoiru Pavilion reflected on the pond was stunning.

Citizens dressed up in multi-colored hanboks hold hands and dance around in big circles under the moonlight. A wave of people in hanbok dance to the lively rhythms of ganggangsullae. More than 1,000 people, including dancers from Jindo and foreign students studying in Korea, joined hands for this traditional folk dance.

[Soundbite] Choi Ye-won(Participant) : Wearing such a pretty hanbok and dancing 'Ganggangsullae' on a beautiful autumn night is going to be a nice, meaningful memory.

An array of events were available for visitors. People stop to watch a hanbok fashion show and the reenactment of a wedding ceremony between Joseon's last king and queen.

줄거리 : 40대 명망있는 작가 이준섭은 5년이 넘게 치매를 앓아온 시골노모가 돌아가셨다는 연락을 받고 분주히 고향을 찾는다. 87세 할머니의 죽음은 많은 사람들에게 다른 감정으로 다가간다. 특히 치매에 걸린 시어머니를 모셔온 형수의 감정은 홀가분함과 애석함이 교차한다. 한편, 준섭의 모친상을 통해 그의 문학세계를 재조명하는 기사를 쓰러온 기자 장혜림은 관찰자로 장례식의 이모저모를 취재하기 바쁘다. 장례가 시작되고, 어머니의 죽음을 놓고 생기던 그 골이 깊어진다. 그러나 장례식이 진행되면서 가족들의 갈등은 서서히 풀리고, 할머니를 모시지 않은 삼촌 준섭을 원망하던 용순은 준섭이 쓴 동화를 읽고 눈물을 흘린다. 장례가 끝나자 노모가 남겨준 큰 사랑과 삶의 지혜를 가족들은 각자의 가슴속에 간직하게 된다.

SYNOPSIS : Lee Joonsup is a famous writer in his 40s. One day, he is informed that his mother who has been ill for more than 5 yea rs has died. Before he goes to his mother's house in the countryside to assist with the funeral, he is busy cancelling a ll his appointments and telling everyone about his mother's death. A journalist, Jang Haerim, comes to the funeral to write an article about Joonsup's literary world. The funeral starts and enmity among the family of the deceased deepens as Joonsup's niece, Yongsoon, arrives. However, by the end of the fu neral, Yongsoon cries after reading Joonsup's fairy tale, and the relatives come to understand each other better. When t he funeral ends, all the relatives cherish the wisdom and love of life of Joonsup's deceased mother.
