caravan trip 2007 Halls Creek (2005 population est. 1300) is a small town situated in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is located between the towns of Fitzroy Crossing and Warmun (Turkey Creek) on the Great Northern Highway. Functions The town functions as a support centre for remote cattle stations in the area. For tourists it is the only sizeable town for 600 km on the Great Northern Highway. The town is a major welfare hub for the local indigenous population. Halls Creek is also the administration centre for Halls Creek Shire Council. Tourism For tourists, there are several nearby attractions such as: the China Wall old Halls Creek the Duncan Road Wolfe Creek crater, 200 km to the south on the Tanami Road Purnululu National Park (the Bungle Bungles), 120km to the north. History In the early 20th century, Halls Creek moved 12km west from its original location in 1949 due to flooding in the older town. In those times it was a gold mining town, named after Charles Hall who in 1885 found the alluvial gold that led to the Kimberley gold rush, but gold mining has since ceased. Indigenous population It is home to the indigenous Jaru (Djar-u) and Kija (gKid-ja) peoples as well as some Tjurabalan peoples from the desert to the south of the town. They represent over 60% of the town's population. In 2006, The West Australian newspaper has run a series of articles highlighting the awful state of the Halls Creek indigenous population. The attention received may prompt some action to improve the situation; however, Halls Creek is by no means unusual in this regard, with tens and hundreds of similarly awful indigenous towns and communities in the Pilbara, Kimberley, and other parts of the state. Halls Creek Town Walk
THE BRIEF:
LandCorp's Halls Creek Town Walk project was shortlisted for an international architecture award in a community benefit category. Given the town's remoteness, the judges were unable to visit the community to 'walk the walk' themselves.
My brief was to produce a 3min 'virtual walk' to take the judges on the journey and to hear the stories of locals about the positive impact the project had on their community
THE RESULT:
The clip was used to support LandCorp's final award presentation. It is also set to feature on Kimberley community television station Goolarri TV (GTV35) and ICTV, an Indigenous channel broadcast across northern Australia.
PRODUCTION:
Given budget constraints and the logistics of shooting in such a remote location, I used a photographer to take stills while walking the project to achieve a POV-feel without the use of a dolly or steadycam.. these stills were image sequenced and edited together with the vision and interviews I captured on the road.
Produced the clip including development of narrative and graphics. Also negotiated permission to use the soundtrack which featuring respected Kimberley artist and Halls Creek local Peter Brandy.

It stopped us in our tracks! Stunning! The lake which thought it was sky! You may also like: Road Train Remote Australia Dust
600 kms North West of Alice Springs. We'd passed no vehicles in the last 300+ kms. We came across this beautiful lake 20 kms before Rabbit Flat. A break in our journey - relaxation, peace, meditation! We just had to stop there. So amazing! I got out my Iphone S4 and took these shots. It was a perfectly still day with hardly a puff of air. The surface of the lake was completely smooth, like glass without a ripple.
For us, driving up the Tanami Highway in Central Australia is all in a day's work. It's a long drive from Alice Springs to Balgo (Wirrimanu) Aboriginal Community. More times than not the vehicle gets a flat tyre! I hope that this video captures the beauty of Central Australia.
In the winter (or Dry Season in Halls Creek at the top of the Tanami at the Southern edges of the Kimberleys) the Tanami Highway is full of four wheel drives from down South. It's great that tourist can experience this country. Although we live here we never take the outback for granted. We leave Alice Springs - always well prepared. We take at least two spare tyres. We take at least a jerry can of water. Even in summer I take something warm to wear just in case rain comes and the temperate plummets for a day or so. Normally, in summer, its around the 40C mark but when rain comes or a NW Cloud Band the temperate can get quite chilly.... even in summer it can drop below 20C.
Last trip, just before Christmas, the Tanami Highway was in really good condition. But this time, rain North of Yuendumu had affected the road significantly. On the Northern Territory side there were a couple of road teams working on the highway.... grading out all the wheel ruts, potholes and corrugations. In places, our 4WD felt like it was going to shake itself to bits on the corrugations!
The drive from Alice Springs to Balgo is just under 850 kms one way. It usually takes around 10 hours to do (without rushing and having a good lunch break). It is interesting to go past the Newmont mines - like the Granites - and to see the huge amount of work that has been done. Huge mounds of earth. Big dams.
