Harpers Ferry is a historic town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States, in the lower Shenandoah Valley. It was formerly spelled Harper's Ferry with an apostrophe and that form continues to appear in some references. It is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet. It is the easternmost town in West Virginia. John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was an effort by armed abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slave revolt in 1859 by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown's party of 22 was defeated by a company of U.S. Marines, led by First Lieutenant Israel Greene. Colonel Robert E. Lee was in overall command of the operation to retake the arsenal. John Brown had originally asked Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, both of whom he had met in his transformative years as an abolitionist in Springfield, Massachusetts, to join him in his raid, but Tubman was prevented by illness and Douglass declined, as he believed Brown's plan would fail.

SHOULD YOU VISIT HARPER'S FERRY CITY CENTER? EXPLORING THE TOWN VLOG

After we went tubing as you saw in our last video, we went and check out Harper's Ferry city center. This place was loaded with history and also quite crazy to think the population has gone down 75% in the last couple hundred years. The population is just under 300, but there is so many cool things to do and see.

We highly recommend to check out Harper's Ferry. It is such an awesome short trip from DC that you do not want to miss!

Hiking Maryland Heights at Harper's Ferry

The Maryland Heights Trail is one of the must do hikes in Harper's Ferry National Historic Park, located in Maryland and West Virginia, in and around the historic town of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. This trail is heavily used and crowded, even on weekdays. You'd better go early if you want any solitude at all. LOL!

In this video, I start out along the north banks of the Potomac River, in Washington County, Maryland, just off the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail. From here I access the Maryland Heights Trail, which climbs steeply up the ridge. The trail passes some Civil War fortifications and then descends steeply to the top of a huge cliff that offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

Harpers Ferry (formerly Harper's Ferry), September 10, 2015. It is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet.
On October 16, 1859, the radical abolitionist John Brown led a group of 21 men in a raid on the arsenal.
The Civil War was disastrous for Harpers Ferry, which changed hands eight times between 1861 and 1865
