Holesov, Czech Republic, by motorhome
Holešov is located to the west of the Hostýn Hills - the westernmost part of the Carpathian Mountains. It is dominated by the early Baroque chateau which also has an observatory. One can take a tour with a guide dressed in Baroque costume. The chateau features a unique gardern with more than 50 varieties of fruitand waterways similar to those found in France whilst the Rose Garden is somewhat British. In the Rose Garden there is a statue of the composer Franz Xaver Richter who was possibly from Holešov. Richter is noted for his symphonies as well as concertos for woodwinds, trumpet, chamber and church music
Holešov was first mentioned in the first half of 12th century as a village owned by the Bishop of Olomouc. Holešov got some municipal rights in 1322. In 1848 the town was officially divided into two parts: the larger Christian town and a smaller Jewish municipality which contained almost one-third of the town's population. It was only after 1918 when the town was united under one administration.
The town was inhabited by a large Jewish community from the first half of the 16th century. There is an usual synagogue with ornate ironwork and painted ceilings and walls using floral and animal motifs. This Old Synagogue, also known as the Shakh or Šach Synagogue, was preserved because it looked like an ordinary building from outside. The New Synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in 1942.
