【narration】
This is Mr. Enkichi Onodera, age 83.
It has been 33 years since he opened his studio for straw crafts.
With the coming of December, he is flooded with orders from all over the country for New Year’s decorations.
Even with 20 employees, every day is really busy.
This is “Onodera Straw Works” in Isawa-ku, Oshu-shi.
Receiving inquiries from people working in folk art and festivals, he is told that his goods fit better than others’.
He first started doing straw works around the age of 8.
Having watched his parents making straw crafts as a job during the winter months, it was not until he was 50 before he made it his real job.
“When I hand a product to a customer and see their smile, I feel that this is really what I should be doing.
When I tell someone older than me that I do straw crafts, they say “Unbelievable,” but people older than me are getting weaker and dying off. It is sad.”
Besides his work, he also supports local events.
He makes the “ODAWARA” (big bales) that appear in the “All Japan NOHADATE NO TSUDOI” event that takes place in Isawa-ku each February.
They weigh up to 8 tons! He remakes them every four years.
He also has a straw crafts workshop for children so they can learn the joys of straw.
“There are various facets to cultures, but I hope to spread the culture of straw throughout Oshu and both in and out of Iwate.”
This has been Mr. Enkichi Onodera, doing his utmost for the “Culture of Straw.”
