ASAM PEDAS in MELAKA- Melaka Famous Food | Food and Travel Channel | Melaka, Malaysia

When in Melaka you must try the popular Malay dish, asam pedas. This spicy, tangy stew is made from tamarind and chilli and a protein of your choosing. There are lots of asam pedas restaurants in Melakak but we dine at a Kota Laksamana which serves its asam pedas in a claypot.
We opt for pari (stingray) and tetel (beef shank). Both asam pedas claypot come with white rice, half a salted duck egg and some vegetables. It is a delicious dish and definitely one to tick off your Melaka famous food eats list!
After dinner we head to Jonker Street for the night market or pasar malam which is held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from about 6:00pm to midnight. There are lots of stalls selling everything from fake tattoos and fidget spinners to phone covers and clothing. We buy some dodol, a soft sticky coconut toffee to sample. Definitely worth a try.
Where we ate:
Restoran Kota Laksamana Asam Pedas Claypot
86, Jalan Laksamana 5, Taman Kota Laksamana, 75200 Melaka
Open Monday to Friday 6:00pm to 4:00am and Saturday 6:00pm to 8:15am
Halal
Thanks to all our subscribers who recommended we visit Restoran Kota Laksamana for Asam Pedas Claypot!

Things to do in Malaysia | Top Attractions Travel Guide
When I think of the most under-rated countries to visit in SE Asia Malaysia comes to mind. With a rich culture and diversity - unlike any other nation in Southeast Asia - there is something for everyone. Some of my favorite places to visit in Malaysia include Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang and the Cameron Highlands. The following is a top attractions travel guide for the best things to do in Malaysia:

1) Few architectural wonders can compete with the Petronas Towers. Equally as impressive by day as they are at night, it is an absolute must landmark to visit in Kuala Lumpur.
2) Night markets in Malaysia are well worth a visit. My personal favorite is the Jonker Street Night Market located in Melaka. On the weekends Jonker street shuts down to traffic and turns into a sea of people and stalls selling everything from trinkets to street food. While we were there we made sure to cool down with Cendol, which is our favorite Malaysian street food snack.
3) The Batu Caves are of my favorite attractions that is absolutely free! Taking the commuter train from KL Sentral we arrived early in the morning before all of the package tourists. The caves themselves, an important Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, are worth the 272 step climb to the top. You'll notice many of cheeky monkeys.
4) The KL Bird Park is a quirky attraction worth checking out. Its claim to fame is being the largest walk in aviary. Home to thousands of birds you'll be able to spot peacocks, flamingos and many other exotic ones.
5) While you're in Georgetown, Penang consider visiting a recently opened cat cafe! The Purrfect Cat Cafe in George Town is home to some adorable cats.
6) Whenever I head back to Malaysia I can't help but break out in a smile because I know I'm going to get a chance to eat dim sum.
7) When I mentioned Malaysia was a diverse country, I was referring to the people and cuisine. Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines and having the opportunity to eat a delicious banana leaf thali set is something I wouldn't miss for the world. Loaded up with rice, dal, vegetables, roti, papad, chutney and pickles. Coming in at only 22 Ringgit (for the two of us) it's an inexpensive but delicious meal.
8) Want to visit the biggest Buddhist temple in all of Southeast Asia? Would you be surprised to learn that it is in Malaysia? Kek Lok Si temple, also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, is located in Air Itam. The temple combines Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese rituals. To visit take bus 201, 203 or 204 from Komplex Komptar in the heart of George Town, Penang.
9) The Petronas Towers are brilliant by day but 'wow' do they ever shine bright at night. They have really cool light shows.
10) You can't visit Malaysia without having Roti Canai for breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or a snack. An Indian flat bread, similar to a pancake, it comes in all different sizes, shapes and flavors. Our two favorites being cheese and banana.
11) While in Malacca it's a great idea to take a Melaka River Cruise at night as the city really lights up at night. You'll notice wonderful old colonial architecture and street art along with traditional homes alongside the Kampong.
12) The Clan Jetties are an important part of George Town's heritage and the last bastions of old Chinese settlements.
13) Georgetown is one of the most hot and humid cities I've ever visited. If you're looking to escape that for a while head over to the Botanical Gardens just outside of the city. In shady conditions you'll have the opportunity to walk around this massive park where you'll surely spot monkeys and other wildlife.
14) When visiting Malacca be sure to check out a Baba-Nyonya restaurant. A mixture of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine at its finest. Some of our favorite dishes included Nyonya Laksa, Rojak and Popiah.
15) Bling. Bling. That's not the sound of a horn but instead the decorations on a rickshaw in George Town. For around 30 to 40 Ringgit you can take a full one hour city tour. It certainly beats walking around in the heat. Highlights for us included going through Little India.

Satay
Satay (/ˈsæteɪ/, /ˈsɑːteɪ/ SAH-tay), or sate in Indonesian and Malaysian spelling, is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce.[3] Satay may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, fish, other meats, or tofu; the more authentic version uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond, although bamboo skewers are often used. These are grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire, then served with various spicy seasonings. Satay can be served in various sauces, however most often they are served in a combination of soy and peanut sauce.[4] Hence, peanut sauce is often called satay sauce.[5]
Satay originated in the Indonesian island of Java.[2][6][7][8] It is available almost anywhere in Indonesia, where it has become a national dish.[1][9][10] It is also popular in many other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, East Timor as well as in Suriname and the Netherlands, as Indonesia and Suriname are former Dutch colonies.
Satay is a very popular delicacy in Indonesia; the country's diverse ethnic groups' culinary arts (see Indonesian cuisine) have produced a wide variety of satays. In Indonesia, satay is a popular street food,[2] it can be obtained from a travelling satay vendor, from a street-side tent-restaurant, in an upper-class restaurant, or during traditional celebration feasts. In Malaysia, satay is a popular dish—especially during celebrations—and can be found throughout the country. In Southern Philippines it is known as satti.
Close analogues are yakitori from Japan, chuanr from China, shish kebab from Turkey and the Middle East, shashlik from the Caucasus and sosatie from South Africa. It is listed at number 14 on World's 50 most delicious foods readers' poll compiled by CNN Go in 2011.

1) Visit Kek Lok Si Supreme Temple of Bliss
Located just 40 minutes away from the heart of George Town (take buses 201, 203 or 204) in Air Itam, this Buddhist Temple with Chinese influences is well worth exploring and best of all it's absolutely free!
2) Wander around the Clan Jetties Stilt Villages
These last Bastions of traditional Chinese settlement are a fascinating way to explore George Town on foot. Although some Jetties are quite commercial, if you wander on the outskirts you'll find a much more authentic experience.
3) Get up early and eat Dim Sum while drinking Chinese Tea
One of my favorite breakfast options is Dim Sum, and I dragged Audrey out of bed several times while stationed in George Town to enjoy an assortment of different dishes while sipping on copious amounts of tea.
4) Escape the chaos and head to the Botanical Gardens
A leafy lush refuge from hectic George Town, the Botanical Gardens are a great place to seek shade and feel at one with nature. One will almost certainly encounter cheeky monkeys along the way.
5) George Town Waterfront Views
Take the time to gaze and wander along George Town's waterfront views. You will likely spot cruise ships, tankers, ferries, humble row boats and fishermen.
6) Explore Fort Cornwallis
Explore Fort Cornwallis and its plethora of cannonballs built after the founder Francis Light.
7) Roam around Little India
Little India is one of the most colorful and diverse enclaves found in George Town. Grab a roti and curry and listen to the thumping sounds coming out of loud speakers.
8) Wander Around George Town
Few activities are more fascinating than taking a tour on foot around George Town's historic colonial area. You will notice many of the mansions are crumbling before your very eyes.
I hope you enjoy these 8 recommendations for ways to spend your time in Penang, Malaysia:
