Japan Trip: Relaxing and Refreshing in Nozawa Onsen Town in Nagano46 Moopon
Nozawa Onsen, located at the base of the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort in Nagano Prefecture, is a quaint onsen (hot spring) town with narrow alleys and canals. The town is full of hotels, ryokan (inn), shops, restaurants and bars. The town is well-known for its hot springs for skiers to relax their sore muscles after a day on the slopes. Skiers, as well as other visitors, have the option of bathing at one of the many small, public onsens (hot springs) located throughout the town.
Known as soto-yu (literally translated to “outside bath water”), these traditional public onsens have been community owned and maintained since the Edo Period. The baths are truly historic. Each gender has only its only onsen bath and a changing area.
The soto-yu are free to the public (donations are appreciated). Note: amenities (soap, etc) are not provided. Also some of the baths are extremely hot, so proceed with care.
Visitors can find the largest of Nozawa Onsen's soto-yu is Oyu, housed in a beautiful wooden building at the center of town. A symbol of the town, it was recently renovated in an Edo Period style.
In addition to the public onsens, visitors spending the night in Nozawa Onsen's hotels and ryokan (inn) can use the facility’s onsen baths. There are hotels and ryokan which allow guests not spending the night at the hotel to use their onsen during the day for a small fee.
Visitors may wish to visit the unique Ogama hot spring. It is located on the slope towards the ski resort. The temperature of the water in the Ogama hot spring is a scalding 90 degrees Celsius. Because it is too hot for bathing, the local villagers use this water for cooking and craft making. The Ogama hot spring is an important natural monument.
Nozawa Onsens are within walking distance of each other, located throughout the town center.
