Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip Vlog Series: Touring Achill Island and Westport
Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip Vlog Series: Touring Achill Island and Westport
In this episode we continue our tour south along the Wild Atlantic in our camervan - Trudy and arrive and the beautiful Achill Island. We couldn't resits stopping for lunch in Europes most westerly pub - Gieltys Bar. Chris had a wonderful plate of traditional fish and chips.
After lunch we drove on the road to Keel Beach - not a road for anyone with a fear of heights - the road has a straight drop right next to it - but wow the views are amazing !.
Keel beach is just fabulous the weather was yet again amazing and the colour of the water makes it look like we were on a tropical island !!
After leaving Achill Island we headed into the town of Westport to meet up with Niamh, Roger & Rossi who own a Fishing and adventure shop in town. They had been following our adventure on social media so we popped in to see them on the way through. We ended up stopping the night and sharing stories over a couple of pints of Guinness. They presented us with a fishing rod and tackle so we could catch dinner on our travels - thanks guys - that was such a nice gift !!!
The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the longest designated coastal road trips in the world at over 2,500 km long. Our road trip of the Wild Atlantic Way started at the most Northern Point of Ireland - Malin Head and finished all the way at the bottom in the town of Kinsale.
The Wild Atlantic way is a road trip of a lifetime and that’s why we just had to do it and produce a travel series of vlogs of our experiences along this magical road. We saw beautiful and dramatic cliffs, stunning beaches, the best sunsets, met lots of lovely people, sung at a shanty festival and saw Ireland at it’s best. If you come to Ireland you must visit the Wild Atlantic Way - even if you can’t do the complete road trip just go and do part of it - absolutely awesome and what a road trip to start off our never ending journey around the Globe.
We hope you enjoy this episode of our Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip Vlog Series.

a visit to Achill Island, Ireland
Achill Island is the biggest island in Ireland, but it is grand not only because of its size. the beautiful views & wild nature make it a great place to visit!

There's adventure (we did Stand up PaddleBoarding with Pure Magic Watersports) , stunning natural beauty (Keem bay, Keem Beach, Corrymore Lake), good food (Pure Magic) and Guinness beer (the Annexxe Inn). ;)
Best place to stay is Pure Magic -
Watch it with music and share it with a friend who's heading to Ireland.

Sailing Destinations - Paris and the French Canals
While at anchor aboard Distant Shores III in the Bahamas, we talk about our favourite sailing destinations from 30 years of cruising. In this episode, we take you into Paris by sailboat and under the city streets in old tunnels that you can navigate with a boat. We show how to prepare a boat to travel through the French Waterways and provide resources to help you plan your own voyage.

Resources for cruising the French Waterways:
A summary of our 10-week voyage through the French Waterways from the north coast, south to the Mediterranean Sea plus links to blogs and videos that we created about this wonderful adventure through France by water.
The official site for Voies Navigables de France. This is where you buy your permit and check for closures on the French Waterways and other navigational information.
An informative English language website run by experienced cruising sailors on all aspects of the French waterways. A great place to start to learn how to prepare for a trip through the canals whether on your own boat or chartering.

Ireland - Croagh Patrick
Nestled west of Westport on the west coast of Ireland in County Mayo, Croagh Patrick, or Mount Patrick, stands 762m high (~2500ft). It's a pilgrimage site, as Saint Patrick is reputed to have climbed it and stayed there for 40 days and 40 nights without food or water. Normally people are advised that it takes 3.5 hours to go up and down - and it might, if you stick to the gravel side of the path. But gravel is slippery...
I went along the rocks - big ones embedded in the ground, or smaller ones intricated in each other. With long legs, I could hop from one to another at a fair pace without feeling tired; I did stuff like this all the time when doing orienteering as a youth, except on mini-cliffsides of maybe 10 m, not 100m at a time...
The last bit has a grade that must be close to 40 degrees! It was tough going up, and more treacherous going down.
I went up in 65 minutes, rested 20 minutes, and went down in 50, resting another 20. My excuse is that I had other places to be after. :) At the top, my batteries died, and I had forgotten my spares, so I could only get a few seconds' worth of videos at a time, and no pictures.
No, I am NOT going up another time to take pictures. :)
