Dunguaire Castle near Kinvara - County Galway, Ireland
Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara - County Galway, Ireland - Sorry we named this Castle Oranmore Castle originally - but thanks to Joe in the comments below - who corrected our error :-) Shows you - too many castles in Galway! So next visit we need to visit this one again and also Oranmore Castle - hoping for good weather soon! :-)
It was built in 1520 by the O’Hynes clan on the picturesque shores of Galway Bay. In the early 17th century the castle passed into the hands of the Martyn’s of Galway. Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway lived here until 1642 and the Martyn’s of Tulira Castle, owned the castle until this century.
Another castle added to our list to check out next visit is Oranmore Castle in County Galway, Ireland, is located, there is the Oranmore Castle Lodge, which is also known as the Monkey House, and which provides a panoramic view of the Galway Bay with its atmosphere from the sunsets, the bird life, the otters, and the seals. Oranmore lodge is found just across the laneway from the Oranmore Castle's organic garden. We definitely recommend this place for those who will come a long way and who will be staying at Galway for a couple of days.
The Galway bay which Dunguaire Castle is located near is the large bay on the west coast of Ireland, between county Galway in the province of Connacht to the North, to the Burren in county Clare in the province of Munster to the south. There are several small islands found across the bay since it is 50 kilometers long and from 10 to 30 kilometers wide. From these different other islands which are found on Galway Bay, you will remember the Aran Island which is considered one of the most famous. Galway in general is so famous in the Irish culture and has been even mentioned in several songs.
There are lots of places to visit in Northern Ireland and which combine between the historical buildings found there and the nature, such as the case with Oranmore Castle. In addition to this castle, you could also manage to visit other places in Galway, Ireland, such as the Cliffs of Moher, which will give you the chance to view Aran Islands as well from afar but only if the weather is clear (
Speaking of Galway and its attractions, we are very happy to share what we have seen even while we were on the way to it. On our way to Galway, we made a quick stop near Dromahair, Ballintogher, Ballygawley, and Manorhamilton; you could check that here and see what we have witnessed (
One would actually get astonished with the amount of things he/she could see in Galway, Ireland. Galway is considered the fourth most populous urban area in the Republic of Ireland and the sixth most populous city on the island of Ireland - which might be enough to explain the amount of things one always wants to visit in this place and why it gains all these likes and references.
One of the reasons why those who visit any of the places in Galway or even those too close are advised to stay in this city for some time is because of its simplicity and the live Irish music which is offered by the different traditional Irish hubs which are found there. In addition to these hubs, there are also some shops, stone-clad cafes, as well as the boutiques and art galleries which line the winding lanes of the Latin Quarter, which retains portions of the medieval city walls.
We really did love Dunguaire Castle and even enjoyed the souvenir shop which we entered there. To make this different for you, we also tried the 360 video of the Dunguaire Castle to give those who still don't know where they might visit the chance to consider themselves right inside that magical place!
If you have been to Dunguaire Castle Kinvara, before then share with us your experience; what you enjoyed and what are the things you didn't like much. If you are still in the phase of preparation and haven't been to the castle before then we hope that this video will give you the push and provide you with the tips and information you might need.

Top 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL Places in IRELAND | Essential Irish Travel Guide
Dunguaire Castle - 360 Degree Walk Around Dunguaire Castle
Dunguaire Castle - is a Tower House or Castle near Galway City. A lovely castle overlooking the water - which you can walk around, inside and to the roof.
Sorry for the error in the video title where we thought this was Oranmore Castle - it is clearly Dunguaire Castle :-) Too many Castles in Galway!! ( slightly jealous !)
Oranmore is a nice small town - on the commuter belt of Galway - so the road can get very busy. There are some really old cottages opposite the Castle as well - where tourist buses tend to park up. Galway is in Connacht on the west of Ireland and Oranmore is part of the Wild Atlantic Way - well worth a stop!
There is a long history behind Oranmore Castle in Galway that placed it among the different historical sites and places that one will be willing to visit in Ireland and which is all about the ownership of the castle by the fifth Earl Clanricarde. It all started when this castle belonged to Clanricarde which is a Norman family in Galway, Ireland, when Galway was under the rule of the marquess and the fifth Clanricarde. Along the years, the castle surrendered to the Parliamentary forces but the successor, the sixth Clanricarde was able to regain it.
Over the years and at some point, the Oranmore Castle was left to the ruins but was then taken by Lady Leslie who her granddaughter Leonie King, managed to do some restorations to the place and where she is believed to be still living until today.
Oranmore castle has four storeys, a rectangular tower house with a square staircase turret, a great hall on the ground floor, and more things to be seen and spotted inside. This castle is not open all year long, but it is open to the public from June to August from 10 AM to 2 PM, but is closed on Mondays.
Always make sure that you are visiting this castle on the days and hours that the public will be allowed to enter in order not to miss the chance of seeing the place from the inside and also end up taking pictures from outside and around it only.
The visit to the Oranmore Castle in Galway is different because it is not just about getting inside the place, but it is also about getting on top and enjoying the scene and the weather since it is located on the bay, giving people the chance to combine between history, greenery, and water all at the same time and in the same place.
During our visit to the castle, we decided to bring the adventure to you in a 360 degree video so that you would feel like being the one touring the place and at the same time make you more excited about planning a trip to it - or to Ireland in general if you are living abroad.
Just in the same way the Oranmore Castle is offering locals and tourists the chance to come and visit the place as a touristic attraction in Ireland, it also gives people the chance to book the place for special private events, like a wedding for example, so that people would end up with a romantic wedding in a historical castle which highlights the history of Galway.
Talking about castles and getting the chance to visit the Oranmore one in Galway, we are also excited about mentioning some of those other castles found in Ireland/Northern Ireland and which we got the chance to visit before and thus will suggest them for the tourists searching for different destinations to head to.
The Norman castle found in county Down and which is known as Dandrum Castle is the first suggestion to place ( there is also the Dunluce Castle on the cliffs of Northern Ireland and which dates back to the medieval times and which has been featured in the Game of Thrones movie series ( In addition to these two, one could visit the famous Belfast Castle which is found in the capital city of Northern Ireland and which is always placed as one of the places one should visit in Belfast (
There are different places that one could visit in Ireland and which vary between castles, museums, monuments, gardens, or even just walking around in the streets, which will all provide the perfect memory that the person will bring back after leaving the country and go back home.
We were excited about visiting the Oranmore Castle in Galway and which overlooks the Galway Bay to see this old building and walk around the whole place, bearing in mind that we had our kids along with us and they also finished the trip happy about what they have seen - although it was a little bit hard for them to walk around the castle because of the rocks (
What are the castles that you have been to before in Northern Ireland or Ireland in general? Have you ever got the chance to pass by Oranmore Castle in Galway and enjoy both the indoors as well as the outdoors? If you have been then tell us more about your experience.

Aughnanure Castle - Oughterard - County Galway - Ireland
