The Unsolved Mystery of Gilmerton Cove | Edinburgh's Most Highly Rated Tourist Attraction
Thanks for watching...
Gilmerton Cove is a series of underground passageways and chambers hand-carved from sandstone located beneath the streets of Gilmerton, an ex-mining village, now a southeastern suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland.
A five-year collaborative project between Gilmerton Heritage Trust and The City of Edinburgh Council allowed the newly restored Cove to open in 2003 as an educational resource for the community as well as a place to visit.
There are many theories about the origins of the Cove and its purpose. It is known that it was the 18th century residence of local blacksmith, George Paterson. The parish records show that he was reprimanded for allowing alcohol to be consumed within the Cove on the sabbath. It is not known whether Paterson was responsible for carving the Cove.
In 1769 Thomas Pennant mentions the site in the context of Newbattle Abbey saying that In the woods adjacent to this seat are some subterraneous (sic) apartments and passages cut out of the live rock: they seem to have been excavated by the ancient inhabitants of the country either as receptacles for their provisions, or a retreat for themselves and families in time of war, in the same manner, as Tacitus relates, as was customary with the old Germans.

Broadstairs is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about 80 miles east of London. Broadstairs is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St Peter's.
Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, Broadstairs is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the Jewel in Thanet's crown. The town's crest motto is Stella Maris (Star of the Sea). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff's summit.
Broadstairs town spreads from Haine Road in the west to Kingsgate (named after the landing of King Charles II in 1683) a hamlet in St Peter parish in the north and to Dumpton in the south (named after the yeoman Dudeman who farmed there in the 13th century). The hamlet of Reading (formerly Reden or Redyng) Street was established by Flemish refugees in the 17th century.
The town lies above a harbour with cliffs on either side. Broadstairs has seven bays of golden sand, which are (from south to north) Dumpton Gap, Louisa Bay, Viking Bay, Stone Bay, Joss Bay, Kingsgate Bay and Botany Bay. North Foreland rises between Stone Bay and Joss Bay. On the cliffs above Kingsgate Bay is Kingsgate Castle, formerly part of the estate of Lord Holland but now converted into private residences. Broadstairs has a very mild maritime climate.
The town of Broadstairs is situated 20 miles (32 km) from both Dover and Canterbury, and about 60 miles (97 km) from the M25, London's orbital motorway. Broadstairs is also served by Southeastern train services to/from London, via either North Kent and Medway or Canterbury and High Speed 1. It is unusual in that trains to London can run either way through the station.

[4K] BROADSTAIRS, KENT WALKING TOUR - Viking Bay to Charles Dickens' Bleak House
Walk with us through picturesque Broadstairs. This small English town with links to Charles Dickens has to be one of the most beautiful towns in Europe and is surely among the top 10 towns in UK.
We begin our walk through Broadstairs at Victoria Gardens, overlooking Viking Bay - (Broadstairs beach.)
Our tour takes us past the Dickens House Museum, along both Charlotte and Albion Street , past Balmoral Gardens and down Harbour Street to the seafront. From we wind up the path to Bleak House.
This is not the actual Bleak House referred to his novel, (it was renamed from Fort House after his death,) Charles Dickens did stay here every summer, and wrote many novels from here. You can stay in Dickens' original bedroom and use the study where he wrote David Copperfield.

Broadstairs, Botany Bay, a London day trip to Kent
Visit Broadstairs and Botany Bay in Kent, England - a perfect seaside escape from London!
As expat travel vloggers, we're on a mission to discover the best London day trips within an easy train commute from King's Cross. Broadstairs and Botany Bay in Kent offer history, lovely beaches and plenty of opportunity to nurture your creative side.
While Broadstairs’ larger, flashy beachfront neighbours look to reinvent and rejuvenate themselves, charming little Broadstairs and Botany Bay quietly get on with what they’ve done best for over a century – enticing visitors with white course sand (Viking Bay) and shallow, sun-warmed sea.
Author Charles Dickens was certainly seduced by Broadstairs’ charms, spending most of his summers here between 1837 and 1859. His former residence now plays the Victorian nostalgia card at every opportunity, a minor distraction for the abundant crowds in search of sun who flock from London.
