Loire Castles - Chateau du Chambord
The largest castle (almost the size of inner Paris) in the Loire Valley is Chambord, one of the most recognizable castles in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture. Built in 1519 by King Francis I as a hunting lodge, it has 77 staircases, 282 fireplaces, and 426 rooms. Francis I reigned for 32 years but he never lived long enough to see the completion of Chambord. His son, Henry II, and Louis XIV continued the construction. Chambord is, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable Renaissance castles in France. Many call it the most beautiful Château of the Loire Valley, but all agree that its scale and majesty are impressive.
Leonardo da Vinci has been credited to have influenced the design of the chateau, since he had come to France in 1516 at the request of his friend King Francis I. The famous double spiral staircase was attributed to him. The two spiral staircases, supported by 8 square pillars, were so designed that if two people each take one flight of stairs, they can see each other through the openings in the central column but will never meet!
The stairway climbs three floors, and on each level, square apartments occupy the four corners. Each apartment connects to another apartment contiguous with the central stairway. The cruciform space left open by this configuration is taken up by four large galleries.
We proceeded immediately to the third floor because it is from the terraces that one has a spectacular view of its roofs, a strange combination of Gothic and Italian Renaissance. When François I commissioned the construction of Chambord, he wanted it to look like the skyline of Constantinople. Inspired directly from Italy, the rooftop terrace provides a unique sight: lanterns, gables, dormer windows, mosaic slate roofs, 800 columns and 365 chimneys, spires, domes and cupolas, lightning rods and pinnacles intermingled together, all detailed by the sculpter's chisel. The third floor is the ideal place to take the best photos of the chateau's roofscape.
From the third floor, we went down the spiral staircase floor by floor, and rooms after rooms. The king's private apartments are located in the northeast corner of the building. The logis (living quarters) of the king matched the chapel located in the west wing. Personal collections from both Francois I and Louis XIV and their royal families are still housed here and are open for public viewing. In the State Apartments are Louis XIV's redecorated bedchamber, the grandest quarters in the château. In the north tower is Francois I's barrel vaulted study, Cabinet de Francois I, which was later turned into an oratory in the 18th century. Francois I's bedchamber is also available for viewing, where the king, hurt by a failed romance, scratched this message onto a pane of glass -- Souvent femme varie, bien fol est que s'y fie (every woman is fickle, he who trusts one is a fool). On the ground floor of the donjon is a collection of carriages and harnesses prepared for the entrance of the Count of Chambord.
Surrounding the château's parkland is a forest of more than 13,000 acres, enclosed by a wall stretching 20 miles (32km). Of Château de Chambord, writer Henry James once said, Chambord is truly royal -- royal in its great scale, its grand air, and its indifference to common considerations.
It was a very warm sunny day, and since we only had barely two hours to explore the castle, we rushed from each royal apartment to another for more photo opportunities as we sneak past the security. Finally we got to the castle ground and took more pictures, before our tour guide motioned that we are to leave by 4:30pm to avoid the Paris traffic. We arrived in Paris by 6:30, again, dead tired from heat and walking exhaustion.

Karen Brown's Côté Loire Hotel, Blois, France
Karen Brown's video narration of one of her recommended hotels in France, the Côté Loire, in Blois, France
Nestled back from the bank of the Loire- and only a five minutes' walk to the Blois chateaux, is the cozy Côté Loire. Don't judge this hotel by its 2-star rating, it is an intimate, 7-room hotel with great warmth, cleanliness and attention to detail.
The lovely, old stone and timbered walls have embraced guests for over 400 years. The hotel was originally built to accommodate servants and horses of notable clientele who settled in at the more luxurious neighbor.
The majority of the guest rooms are still modest in décor and cozy in size, all in harmony with the original construction.
Family mementos and antiques decorate the public areas.
A cozy bar doubles as a reception ...and to the side, is a lovely restaurant. The limited menu changes daily.
The Côté Loire offers a wonderful value and base for those touring the Loire valley and all of its magnificent chateau. Cote Loire hotel in France
