Jungfrau Switzerland Travel Guide - The Top of Europe
A travel guide for riding the train to the Jungfrau in Switzerland and exploring the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe. The Jungfrau is one of Switzerland's most visited attractions, and is also home to Europe's highest elevation train station. It's an amazing place where you can see glaciers and snow all year round. I begin by giving you an overview of the Jungfrau region itself, then we ride to the Jungfrau on the train from Lauterbrunnen via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. Then I explore the various attractions at the top of the Jungfrau at the Jungfraujoch including the Sphinx Platform, the Ice Palace, and the various outside snow play areas. We'll even take a look at how expensive a cup of instant noodle is up here!
The Jungfrau summit is one of the most famous peaks in the Swiss Alps. It has an elevation of about 4000 meters or 13,000 feet. It used to be fairly difficult to access well, until 1912 when Switzerland built the world's highest elevation cogwheel railway which takes you up to about 11,000 feet. And once you're at the top, there's a lot of neat stuff to do.
The Jungfrau is a pricey attraction. It can be a hundred, to a hundred and fifty Swiss franks depending upon where you're coming from. But I think it's really worth it. A lot of people, including Rick Steves say it's too manufactured for them, but let me tell you, I enjoy this manufactured platform that I can view the amazing view from. Otherwise I'd have to be like an ice climber and climb up this mountain. Which I never would.
If you're coming to Switzerland the Jungfrau is a must see for the natural beauty and splendor. It is truly amazing. Most trips to the the Jungfrau will start at Interlaken Ost. It's a station at the bottom of the valley. There's a few different ways to work your way up to the top ultimately to the Jungfraujoch or the saddle that's in between the two mountains. In this video I'll be going up the way by Wengen. You can also go up via Grindelwald. And you can also make it a circle trip. You can go up one way and then down the other.
The beginning of the journey up to the Jungfrau, you take the cogwheel train. It'll come up from Lauterbrunnen, and it stops in Wengen. And then it goes up to the station where you take the main train to actually go up to the Jungfrau. This train is kinda cool because it's a cogwheel train. You can actually see there's a track in the middle of it that has all these spikes on it that has the wheel so this train can be really steep. And I'll tell you, the train is really loud. And what's interesting is, the windows you can actually put your hand outside you get fresh air coming in which is really great on a day when it's probably not too hot.
There's a really popular travel quote that says, It's not the destination. It's the journey. And this is one of those trips that it really is the journey. I mean the destination's cool, but the views on the journey are epic. So enjoy the views on the train ride. Have your camera at the ready.
The different facilities at the Jungfrau are connected via these underground tunnels. You come in and it's the restaurant complex. The tunnel will take you out to a lot of the outdoor activities. One of the coolest places at the Jungfrau is at the high climate altitude research station. This is the Sphinx Terrace. It's an altitude of 11,782 feet. From up here you can see snow and what looks like to be a big glacier, in this direction. You can see down into the valley where there's no snow. You can see the snow tubing and the snow hiking paths. I will say why you're up here be careful not to drop anything small because it's open grating and that is a long way down.

A Swiss city made for its watchmakers
La Chaux-de-Fonds is a city resurrected from its ashes. After a catastrophic fire in 1794, it was rebuilt to suit the watchmakers who lived and worked there, making it a unique location in Switzerland.

The varied and technically modern makers have long histories from the days of the first timepieces and automatons made in farms in the Jura Mountains to what is now such a vibrant and dynamic industry. Sports people, Olympians, businesses people, astronauts, deep sea divers,Formula 1 racing teams and many others depend every day on the watches produced so carefully right here in Watch Valley! There are many facets to this special industry and its dynamic nature is so competitive. See and experience the challenging nature of the area, what others have not been able to discover, to see and to learn about, until now.

Fleurier was a municipality in the district of Val-de-Travers in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. On 1 January 2009, the former municipalities of Boveresse, Buttes, Couvet, Fleurier, Les Bayards, Môtiers, Noiraigue, Saint-Sulpice and Travers merged to form the administrative district of Val-de-Travers.[1]
The Nobel laureates, physicist Charles Édouard Guillaume and pharmacologist Daniel Bovet, both originated from Fleurier.
Fleurier is also home to a few very highly respected watch manufactures such as Parmigiani Fleurier and Bovet Fleurier, both of which are known for creating some of the world's finest watches. Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, a company specialising in movements which are then purchased for use by other manufactures, is also based in this area. Also located nearby is the second facility for Chopard, which has its headquarters in Meyrin, Geneva. This facility works mainly on L.U.Chopard watches and works closely with the other manufactures of the area to ensure the highest quality possible. Fleurier Ebauches SA, a subsidiary of the Chopard Group, is also located nearby. This will produce movements both for Chopard watches and other manufactures too. Foundation Qualité Fleurier is based in the town hall, it provides unique testing services for the watchmakers of Fleurier and regularly awards watches that meet its criteria, which are said to be the toughest in the watchmaking business. Chopard watches are the most commonly tested, although some complications are awarded the seal such as the L.U.Chopard Triple Certification Tourbillon. The first watch to have been awarded the COSC Chronometer rating, Geneva Seal as well as the QF (Qualité Fleurier) approval. Given the fact that these tests are incredibly ruthless, to have an exceptional complication such as a tourbillon receive approval is a testament to the manufacture's abilities.

The Besançon Museum of Time is a museum of history and watchmaking in Besançon in the Doubs region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté , housed in one of the most beautiful palaces of the city, the Palais Granvelle. This palace was built from 1532 to 1540 inspired by the Italian Renaissance . It bears the name of Granvelle, illustrious family of the region. Indeed, the palace was built for Nicolas Perrenot, lord of Granvelle , who was Minister of Justice and senior advisor of Emperor Charles V . His son Antoine , born in 1517, also worked in the service of the emperor and his son, Philip II of Spain .
The Granvelle will gather in their bisontine residence important collections of art and books. These treasures will be inventoried at the xvii th century by the Abbé Boisot , which expresses the will to make them accessible to all. They will form the first public collection in France and will be at the origin of the Besançon Library and the Museum of Fine Arts , the oldest museum in France.
The palace will experience the splendor as long as it remains the property of the family. But following the extinction of the line in 1637 , he suffered slow degradation. After the French conquest of 1674 , the building will be rented and made available to the governors. Louis XIV will be welcomed there in 1683 , which earned him the title of Louvre during his stay. In 1712 , the palace becomes property of the city and knows an intense cultural activity. It hosts the Academy of Music, the Comedy Hall and the Academy of Sciences, Belles-Lettres and Arts.
At the end of the xviii th century, the watch industry in Switzerland is hit by unemployment and its watchmakers crossed even porous border to settle in Besançon . France encourages and ratifies this movement of immigration by a decree which, in 1793, allows the arrival from Locle (high place of the Swiss watch industry , close to the French border area of Morteau in Franche-Comté ) of Laurent Mégevand , a trader Swiss in watches that will rely at Besancon the ManufactureFrench Watchmaking in Besançon. Laurent Mégevand wants to compete with Swiss industry and develop his own ideas in the development of the watch industry (which the Swiss did not want) thanks to the support of prominent royalists members of the Constituent Assembly such as the Count Mirabeau , the Marquis Nicolas de Condorcet and Pierre-Joseph Briot (founder of the Jacobin Club of Besançon ). In particular, he develops the subcontracting concept by having the various components of the watch manufactured by various local workshops. It goes bankrupt in1798, but the watch industry of Besançon and Franche-Comté is solidly launched.
