Rhossili Beach Gower Peninsula Wales - ThroughMyCam
Rhossili Beach is one the most amazing day trip in Wales. Situated in Gower Peninsula, Rhossili is a small village on the southwestern tip.
Rhossili Bay curves along an arc running northwards from the village. The sandy beach is three miles (5 km) long and is backed with sand dunes. Behind the beach just north of the village is Rhossili Down with the highest point on the Gower Peninsula, the Beacon (193 metres), and a number of prehistoric remains. It is between Rhossili Down and the beach proper that the Warren is found.
At the southern end of the Bay is the small tidal island called Worm's Head. At the north is Burry Holms. These islands are accessible at low tide only. Also at low tide, it is possible to see the remains of several shipwrecks, wood from the wreck of the Helvetia being the most prominent when looking north from Rhossili. Worms Head consists of two islands, Inner and Outer Head.
Rhossili Bay featured in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, a youth choir began a cappella performances of Bread of Heaven live on the beach which was broadcast at the Olympic Stadium. In 2014, it was voted the UK's number one beach, third best in Europe, and 9th best in the world, by TripAdvisor users.

Rhossili bay at sunset
Rhossili Bay has been voted Wales' Best Beach 2018 and 3rd in the UK in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards AND it has it has been in the top 10 for the last 6 years! The awards cabinet is really filling up, as Rhossili has also been described as ‘The supermodel of British beaches’ by The Independent and has also won accolades from UK Travel Writers and awards for being the best spot to have a picnic! And not forgetting our four legged friends, The Times nominated Rhossili as ‘The UK's No.1 dog-friendly beach’. So, it’s pretty much universally agreed that you won’t find a more beautiful spot in the UK!

History | Helvetia Shipwreck at Rhossili Beach
Helvetia Shipwreck at Rhossili Beach
Rhossili Beach, located at the south-western tip of the Gower peninsula in South Wales, UK was voted the UKs best beach. The beach and the waters that surround it are the final resting place for many shipwrecks and their crews, due to the shallow, rocky sea bed around the Worms' Head and the infamous Helwick Sands which are just off the coast of Worms' Head and Rhossili.
This video focuses on the remains of the Helvetia, an oak-constructed barque which struck the Helwick Sands on the morning of 1st November 1887.
Gale force winds prevented the Helvetia from reaching Swansea Harbour, and while attempting to seek shelter in the anchorage
near the Mumbles' Head, the anchor dragged which lead to the ship drifting along the Bristol Channel towards the Helwick Sands.
The ship struck the Helwick Sands, however after the tide had risen sufficiently the ship broke free and drifted towards the shallow waters around Worms' Head near Rhossili. The crew subsequently abandoned ship and evacuated to the relative safety of Rhossili Beach.
The following morning, it became clear that the ship had been destroyed as the vessel now lay in pieces along Rhossili Beach, with its 500 tonne cargo of timber from New Brunswick (Eastern Canada) strewn along the beach. Fortunately though, all crew
members made to shore safely with no casualities.
The majority of the oak-hulled wreck and its cargo was salvaged by local timber merchants, whereby the timber was used locally in the contruction of houses and and farm buildings. The copper clad keel is still buried deep within the sand and despite its value, was unable to be salvaged.
