Remote Myanmar's Kayah State gets ready for tourism boom
After a decades-long blanket ban on tourists, Kayah State in eastern Myanmar has opened up to the outside world. Travellers are pouring in to get a glimpse of its untouched beauty. As Channel NewsAsia's correspondent Pichayada Promchertchoo reports, the remote state is hoping to develop a tourist industry without losing its charm.
Travel to Myanmar 2019
About Myanmar (Burma)
Myanmar is one of the most beautiful countries in Asia. A spectacular combination of people, culture and landscapes and all at low prices relative to other countries.
The people of Myanmar, for the most part, are Buddhists, exceptionally welcoming people from other counties.
Myanmar is a very large country, bigger than any European country, so a trip of several weeks will cover only a certain part of Myanmar and it is quite possible to cover a central part of Myanmar's famous places in a few weeks.
In the link that appears here, we describe the trip we made, a family of five (three small children) and what route we chose to do in order to make the most of our time.
We have spent 23 days in Myanmar. We started the travel to Myanmar in the northern part of Mandalay, although it can also be started in the southern part, Yangon, and from there to the north, it all depends on where you want to land and where you want to take off.
Here is a full article about our trip to Myanmar:
And here is a very short description or our experience:
We visited the following towns and villages:
Mandalay
Sagaing
Amarapura
Pyin Oo Lwin
Monywa
Bagan
Kakku
Mt. Popa
Loikaw
Inle Lake
Taungoo
Yangon
In each of the places, we have seen many unique sites. You can read all the details in the article and watch it in the video.
Recommended season
Everyone recommends traveling to the cooler season between November and January but it is important to remember that this is also the season loaded with tourists and prices of course accordingly, more expensive.
We usually travel in East or Southeast Asia at the end of the monsoon season in September, and if the season is not extreme, the trip experience is excellent.
Monsoon rains usually descend in the afternoon and freshen the air. The hotels and the hostels are almost empty and you do not have to book in advance. You can reach the place and choose where you want to sleep.
Which of course gives a lot of flexibility to the trip.

Kayah Trip (2018)
Just a memory of the friendship trip to Kayah State, Myanmar.
Night Bus in Myanmar from Bagan to Inle Lake (Nyuangnshwe) with JJ Express
This is my second night bus journey in Myanmar, the first journey was from Yangon to Bagan, and now I am taking the bus to Inle Lake which is my next destination here in Myanmar.
The bus actually takes me to the village of Nyuangshwe, the closest village to Inle Lake connected by waterways to the lake. The night bus stops a few times for comfort breaks and also at the entrance to the Inle Lake area where a fee of 13,000 Burmese Kyats is payable.
Both Bagan and Inle Lake are in the central - northern section of Myanmar, towards the border with Thailand, and the bus journey from Bagan to Inle Lake takes about 8 to 10 hours.
The bus itself is a luxurious bus with only 3 seats per row, the bus seats recline and have foot rests, and blankets are provided for your comfort.
I have used JJ Express for all my bus journeys in Myanmar so far. Your hotel will probably help you book your Myanmar bus journeys, or you can book them online with JJ Exprress.
I have had a wonderful time so far in Myanmar,
