Petra, Jordania - Jordan
Petra, Jordania. La ciudad Rosa del Desierto.
Petra (Greek πέτρα (petra), meaning rock; Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ) is a historic and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that has rock cut architecture and a water conduits system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourism attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as a rose-red city half as old as time in a Newdigate Prize-winning sonnet by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage. Petra was chosen by the BBC as one of the 40 places you have to see before you die.
Pliny the Elder and other writers identify Petra as the capital of the Nabataeans and the centre of their caravan trade. Enclosed by towering rocks and watered by a perennial stream, Petra not only possessed the advantages of a fortress, but controlled the main commercial routes which passed through it to Gaza in the west, to Bosra and Damascus in the north, to Aqaba and Leuce Come on the Red Sea, and across the desert to the Persian Gulf.
Excavations have demonstrated that it was the ability of the Nabataeans to control the water supply that led to the rise of the desert city, creating an artificial oasis. The area is visited by flash floods and archaeological evidence demonstrates the Nabataeans controlled these floods by the use of dams, cisterns and water conduits. These innovations stored water for prolonged periods of drought, and enabled the city to prosper from its sale.
The Theatre
The narrow passage (Siq) that leads to Petra
Petra is known as the Rose-Red City for the colour of the rocks in which Petra is carvedAlthough in ancient times Petra might have been approached from the south via Saudi Arabia on a track leading around Jabal Haroun (Aaron's Mountain), across the plain of Petra, or possibly from the high plateau to the north, most modern visitors approach the site from the east. The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark, narrow gorge (in places only 3--4 m (9.8--13 ft) wide) called the Siq (the shaft), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa. At the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (popularly known as the Treasury), hewn into the sandstone cliff.
El Deir (The Monastery) A little further from the Treasury, at the foot of the mountain called en-Nejr, is a massive theatre, so placed as to bring the greatest number of tombs within view. At the point where the valley opens out into the plain, the site of the city is revealed with striking effect. The amphitheatre has been cut into the hillside and into several of the tombs during its construction. Rectangular gaps in the seating are still visible. Almost enclosing it on three sides are rose-coloured mountain walls, divided into groups by deep fissures, and lined with knobs cut from the rock in the form of towers.
Wadi Bin Hammad , Al - Karak , Jordan
The amazing Wadi Bin Hammad near Al - Karak city , Jordan.
One of the most beautiful places in the Middle east...
As soon as we enter bin Hammad, you shall see a new world with beautiful hanging gardens, palms and ferns growing wherever you might turn. You might even see orchids and even sugarcane! And a spectacular view of a hot spring falling into an artificial pool! Farther down, the cliffs are more visible, close together and brightly colored!

Madaba, Mount Nebo, and the Hot Springs
I get out of school on Wednesdays at 10 AM so Shukri and I decided to go to Madaba for the day. It was a beautiful day with the sun shining bright but the weather not being too hot. First we stopped off at an old church in Madaba-yes a church; Madaba is known for its majority Christian population. Madaba is also famous for its mosaics that are found mostly in old churches and old homes of the rich. The first church we went to has a map mosaic that has the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and other locations charted on it. After that we went to another church and saw some other very beautiful mosaics. Then we went to the Madaba museum and saw more beautiful mosaics! After wandering around Madaba for a good time (all of Madaba reminds me of downtown Amman) we started to drive towards Mount Nebo. On the way we saw a sign for Moses Springs so decided to go check it out. After going downhill for quite some time we happened upon a mossy area in the middle of the desert that had a tiny trickle of water coming from it....and that was it! So we headed back up the mountain and visited Mount Nebo. My first question to Shukri when he said this is Mount Nebo was, This is it?! I guess I was expecting a real mountain that's steep and noticeable, but this was average. The view was breathtaking though and definitely worth seeing. After that we drove to the Hot Springs in Ma'en. The drive there is completely desert and nothingness. Then, all of a sudden you start going down into a valley and green appears! It's so beautiful and lush there and the 10 JDs we each had to pay to get in was well worth it. The hot spring is a fairly small area and I was glad we had come on a week day when there were few tourists or families around. There is an area at the very top which is like a sauna because the water is so scalding hot. The next level is still pretty hot and I recommend not stepping directly in the water where the waterfall comes down (from experience), the next level is bearable and there was one guy meditating underneath the waterfall for I don't know how long, the fourth level is where I mostly hung out in which feels like a hot tub, and the fifth level is just warm. I decided to wear my swimsuit and not care about traditions or men staring and it was very liberating! Once we were done relaxing we drove back to Madaba and had dinner outside at a nice Lebanese restaurant. I was so surprised at how cheap the food was here compared to Amman!! Following dinner we drove back to Amman. It was a fun day and I enjoyed getting out of Amman and seeing more sites in Jordan.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

After Al kajeune is facing a huge quarries. But looking at the rock cliff seems that the perforated holes here and there. This place was called the Nabataeans residence and tomb were made by digging stones. This house is a tomb and there. Here is a place for people to live, there's the grave. Wadi Bari Drago frills grave and there is a big difference at home. Was death because of faith Nabataeans thought part of your life? I nateot a very large earthquake in the fifth century, then all collapsed house. However, the Nabataeans built their graves because they believed firmly in the life after death. The huge, reminiscent of the golden days of the Nabataeans were spectacular tombs of the royal family. The kingdom is a huge dormant for a thousand years and was discovered by the explorers. Spacious cave inside than it is when using dwaetdago rituals and various meetings. It's a wonderful and spectacular sight. So I'd been selected as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. I visited attractions among far as I can Care.
