One of the best weekend excursions you can take from Hanoi is to Mai Chau. This area is special because you stay in very comfortable lodging next to rice paddies and close to authentic ethnic minority villages of the Thai people. You really feel like you're stepping back into a simpler era and that's what makes it truly special. I really enjoyed the tranquility and peaceful vibes even if it can be touristy at times. I highly recommend it. You also don't really need a tourguide. Just take a bus there from Hanoi and explore yourself.

The Vietnam Ride!
Motorbike trips around southeast Asia are my FAVORITE thing to do. If you are visiting Hanoi or Northern Vietnam, i say this is a MUST DO! Whether its to Mai Chou which is 4-5 hours from Hanoi, or to Sapa to the north, or if its all around N Vietnam or even down to Central or South all the way to Saigon!
Also when you visit Thailand or Cambodia or Lao... I don't care where, DON'T be afraid to go for a ride adventure! This ride was very similar to the Chiang Mai to Pai ride. Mai Chau is like Pai but even smaller. A great place to stop for a night!
Then for a day ride from Mai Chau you can ride up to Hang Kia, the small village we went to and get some cool views along the way. Like this thumbnail pic.
If you do stay in Mai Chau, book a room with our host Chau with Booking.com and search for Lu's Homestay.

48 HOURS IN MAI CHAU VALLEY, VIETNAM · Vietnam Travel Vlog
Episode #022
Where are we? ↠ Mai Chau Valley, Vietnam

Episode 022
After being in Hanoi for a few days, we decided to take a trip to Mai Chau Valley, just 3.5 hours from the city. We do want to explore some more areas of north Vietnam, but we'll probably do this on a separate trip with our own transport, so we can really explore this incredible region.
Mai Chau Valley (pronounced My Cho) is a pretty valley tucked into forested mountains a little to the South West of Hanoi, near the border with Laos. From afar the valley looks quiet and secluded, but make your way down into the cycle paths and roads and you'll find bustling villages, homestays and restaurants.
We spent 1 full day here, and thanks to a cold and misty morning we didn't get to do as much as we planned. But we loved wandering the backroads, watching people go about daily life in the fields and unwind from the noise of the city for a couple of nights.
I know there is much more to do in Mai Chau, so I would recommend staying for a few nights to get out and be adventurous here.

Hello,
I’m Chesca, a 28 year old getting lost in this vast planet of ours. In September 2017, my boyfriend Ben and I quit our jobs, sold the flat, sold our cars and gave up everything for a life on the road. We’re digital nomads, working online as we make our way around the world.
Is Mai Chau better than Sapa?

In this vlog we visited Mai Chau, sometimes compared to Sapa for the trekking, rice fields and rural way of living. We stopped over here on our way to the Laos Border.

Trekking in Mai Chau | Vietnam
The idyllic, rural valley of Mai Chau is just 150km from Hanoi but feels like a completely different world. Fields and rice paddies sprawl out across the vista, and the mountains fade sleepily into the horizon. The only soundtrack here is that of nature, the delicate birdsong, the mumbles of the buffaloes, the squawk of the chickens, and the children playing freely in the fields. Although Mai Chau has become an increasingly popular tourist destination, it has retained its welcoming and laidback ambience.
The town itself sits in a fertile valley enveloped on either side by rambling hills all carpeted in thick green forest. The paddies and fields of the town provide the main sustenance for the people living there and elegantly change colour with the seasons. In Spring, the fields are bursting with the bright, vivid green of the young plants. Over the Summer this gradually changes, the paddies morphing into a sea of gold in the Autumn.
Most of the towns are populated by the White Thai ethnic groups but there are also some others in the area such as the H’mong Village of Xa Linh. The villages are small and blend seamlessly with the environment. The majority of houses are skillfully built using a combination of bamboo and timber with thatched roofs, the natural materials complimenting the unblemished surroundings. The main trades in this undisturbed settling, weaving and farming, are now complemented by the tourism that the area attracts. The hospitality of the local families is one of the main charms of the area. The laid-back atmosphere of the environment seems to be an extension of the warm, easy going people that live there.
Thanks for watching.

HANOI Top 55 Tourist Places | Hanoi Tourism | VIETNAM
Hanoi (Things to do - Places to Visit) - HANOI Top Tourist Places
Capital of Vietnam
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade.
There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Đồng Xuân Market, selling household goods and street food.
