A Tragic end to the Meter Gauge (NER MG) Locomotives : Indian Railways
Meter Gauge (MG) Lines are rapidly disappearing in many parts of India making way for Broad Gauge and Electrification. There are hardly a handful of small MG branch lines that are spared by the Indian Railways which are on the verge of closure.
One such line that is on the verge of closure is the Truncated Pilibhit - Mailani 68 KM MG line breathing its last days. This line once functioned from Moradabad - Bareilly - Izzatnagar - Pilibhit -Mailani-Sitapur and Lucknow Aishbagh.
We were shocked to spot a fleet of 13 Izzatnagar (IZN) YDM4 Locomotives stabled at a remote Station Mala near Pilibhit. The station is located on the Pilibhit - Mailani MG line. From the Local authorities we learnt that these Locomotives will be scrapped once the line gets closed. We were shattered to see these MG beasts that once ruled this Section like warriors in a sorry helpless state.
Train : Pilibhit - Mailani and Mailani - Pilibhit Passenger Trains.
Locomotive : YDM4 Izzatnagar Diesel Shed.
Location : Mala Railway Station, Uttar Pradesh (UP State). North Eastern Railways.

The 10 Most Impressive Railways in the World
Get more Tips here!
We always think trains as just a form of transport, but they are much more than that! Here are the most impressive railways from around the world!
1) Burma Railway, Thailand
This train was built by the Japanese army in WWII. It's also known as Death Railway because 110,000 people died building it. Its tracks run along a very narrow path. If you look down, it seems like there's nothing below but a sheer drop.
2) Gokteik Viaduct, Myanmar
It was once the largest railway in the world. If you are afraid of heights you shouldn't get into this train because there are several bridges that will put you off trains for life!
3) Gelmerbahn Funicular, Switzerland
This is the steepest funicular in Europe, with a 106% incline!!! It's one of the scariest rides but also one of the coolest at the same time! You should try it!
4) Bangladesh Railway
Well, the images speak for themselves. It goes without saying that this train is completely overcrowded. People hang from the sides, jump onto the roof... It's absolutely crazy! And as you can imagine, a lot of them die from riding in this dangerous fashion.
5) Maeklong Railway, Thailand
This is a market that is set up on the actual tracks! When a train comes everybody has to quickly fold up their shops and hop out of the way to let the 30 Km/h train plod by. They then set up everything back to how it was. Business as usual.
6) Tren a las Nubes, Argentina
This is one of the highest railways in the world. With 29 bridges, 21 tunnels and 2 zigzags you won't get bored on this one.
7) Indian Railways
This is one of the largest and busiest train networks in the world. The people just jump on it even if the train hasn't stopped, so every year more than 25,000 people die using it.
8) Pilatus Railway, Switzerland
This is the steepest Cogwheel railway in the world. It has a gradient of 48% to reach its station at 7,000 feet.
9) Naríz del diablo Railway, Ecuador
This is considered the world's most dangerous train journey. It climbs more than 500 metres in 12 Km. So it's full of steep ups and downs where you will prefer to keep your eyes firmly shut.
10) White Pass & Yukon Route, Alaska
This one was built to reach the goldfields during the Gold Rush. It steadily climbs up to 3,000 feet and trawls over some of the most beautiful and terrifying bridges out there!

Arriving at Mailani Jn. - Pilibhit-Aishbagh Metre Gauge Pass. (Aug. 8, 2011)
After crossing a forest area, we slowed down on our approach to Mailani. The line from Gonda joined on the left and our train proceeded towards PF1. It was exciting to see trains parked on the other two platforms. The one nearer to us is the 52224 Lakhimpur Pilibhit Passenger. A video of these two trains departing at the same time time can be seen here - .

INDARA to DOHRIGHAT Full Train Journey inside India's Unique Metre Gauge DMU!
A complete train journey from Indara Jn. to Dohrighat in Uttar Pradesh onboard the one and only metre gauge DMU train of India. The morning 10:10 AM DMU train 72205 to Dohrighat departed on time from Indara Jn. From Indara Jn., the broad gauge mainline to Varanasi continues straight while the metre gauge line to Dohrighat bifurcates to the right. The distance between the two places is 35 kms and the train takes 1 hrs 30 mins to complete its journey. The ride in this unique train is truly an amazing experience! There are 4 stations on the route, namely, Kopaganj, Ghosi, Amila and Muradpur Halt. The route is very scenic and is best to visit in the monsoons. I have also included a very different camera angle in my video for an immersive journey experience, hope you all like it...!
