Jodhpur tourist places | The blue city of india | Jodhpur tourism
Jodhpur is second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan and has long been a popular destination among international tourists. However, surprisingly few visitors know the origins of its sobriquet, “the blue city”. The old town is a wonderful example of vivid colours providing a photogenic backdrop to everyday life.
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rathore clan. It flourished quickly, fuelled by profits from opium, sandalwood, dates, and copper trade. The city has a charming blue tinge to it when viewed from above or from a distance, and makes a pretty mean picture. With its imposing Mehrangarh fort dominating the skyline, Jodhpur is hard to not be impressed by. The new city is definitely chaotic, but foray into the narrow lanes of the old city, and you'll find pots, pans, idols, bejewelled fabrics, sensual spices, traditional clothes, ornaments and metalware all jammed between rows of shops, tinsel, stalls and hoards of haggling women! A shopper's paradise, Jodhpur is famous for its richly carved furniture, metal arts, lahariya bandhini textiles and traditional footwear.

JODHPUR - World's Most Colourful Cities - Crazy Traffic - Fort
JODHPUR - RAJASTHAN - It may be known as the Blue City meaning a lot of its houses are painted blue. This is especially evident when looking over the city from the massive fort (next blog). While it may be the Blue City we were also struck the the variety of colours evident throughout the city. It is beautiful to perceive and experience even though it is noisy city full of crazy traffic. Added to the cars, motorcycle, bicycles, tuk tuks or auto-rickshaws was a new wrinkle we had not seen anywhere in India - horse carriages. Imagine for a moment how far back in history this mode of transportation has been used and be amazed at how it has survived here in such a splendid fashion right here in Jodhpur. Walking through the streets of Old Jodphur is such a pleasure and eventually you pathway will lead to the massive fort looming over the city. That will be the subject of the next blog.
