Sowerby Bridge is a market town in the Upper Calder Valley in Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The Calderdale Council ward population at the 2011 census was 11,703. Always pronounced Sorby Bridge, the town was originally a fording point over the once much-wider River Calder where it joins the River Ryburn. The town takes its name from the historic bridge which spans the river in the town centre. Before the Industrial Revolution the area was divided between the parishes of Sowerby, Norland, Skircoat and Warley. The boundaries between them being the rivers Calder and Ryburn and Warley Clough, which is now largely culverted. Textiles and engineering industry grew up around the bridge. By the mid-19th century the population had grown and the settlement became an urban district in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1894.
From 1892 to 1930 Pollit & Wigzell manufactured stationary steam engines for the cotton and woollen mills of Yorkshire, Lancashire and India. Wood Brothers, an engineering and millwright company, also produced engines from its Valley Iron Works. The Markfield Beam Engine is an example for its work. Council buildings on Hollins Mill Lane, the old swimming pool, council offices and fire station will be transferred to the community group, Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water, and will be renovated for community use.
Sowerby Bridge is situated about 3 miles (4.8 km) from Halifax town centre. It is at the confluence of the River Calder and River Ryburn, and the name Sowerby Bridge references its situation as a crossing point over the River Calder to the older settlement at Sowerby. The town is served by Sowerby Bridge railway station, which sees a regular service to Manchester, Bradford and Leeds on the Caldervale Line. Unfortunately this station has no public toilets although there are many interesting information panels about the local area.
The town is at the junction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation and the Rochdale Canal; Tuel Lane Lock on the Rochdale Canal is the deepest lock in the United Kingdom. The canal basin and warehouses where the canals meet, Sowerby Bridge Wharf, are listed buildings and house the Moorings Bar and Restaurant, 12-04 Restaurant and Temujin Mongolian Restaurant. The basin is the headquarters of the 12th Halifax Sea Scouts (M.o.D. No. 54 Royal Navy recognised) where Prince Charles opened the William Andrew Memorial Headquarters. Shire Cruisers run holiday hire canal barges, build narrow boats and provide mooring facilities. Sowerby Bridge features in George Gissing's 1891 novel The Emancipated as the hometown of the protagonist Ross Mallard.

Leicester Riverside festival 2019
Now in its 22nd year the Leicester Riverside Festival took place over the weekend of 1st-2nd June, featuring narrow boats traveling along the river, water sports, street food and a wide program of music acts the festival is fun for the whole family.
My film features a look around the festival and features the Bill Bailey band on their 'Jazz Boat' an act so synonymous with the festival it would seem strange not to hear their sound in the air during the festival.
The rain on the Sunday that I visited did nothing to stop visitors enjoying a day by the riverside.

In this video we focus our food hunting on Hong Kong island. We start the day with a yum cha breakfast. Yum cha literally translates to ‘drink tea’ and a meal of yum cha (Cantonese brunch if you will) is accompanied by dim sum- little dishes. We eat classic dim sum like har gow and siu mai at a really local yum cha restaurant where they make the dim sum in house whilst you eat.
Next on the list is an eggette, a really popular snack in Hong Kong. A type of egg waffle the eggette is made out of an egg heavy batter which is poured into a special mould. The resulting waffle is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and easily tearable due to its shape.
We then head to the famous Michelin starred Yat Lok for a feast of roast goose. No visit to Hong Kong would be complete without a taste of this! Crunchy skin, melt in your mouth fat and dark, slightly gamey meat.
We end at a cha chaan teng a local cafe which serves a range of food including fusion Cantonese and Western dishes. These eateries are really nostalgic and good fun and completely unique to Hong Kong- a must visit!

Yum cha at Sun Hing, Hong Kong, Sai Wan, 士美非路8號, Markfield Building. Open daily 3:00am to 4:00pm.

Football on the Softball Pitch, Finsbury Park
This may look like a perfectly normal scene - a fairly large group of men enjoying a game of football in the park, however just to put this clip into context - the film was taken at 5am on a Saturday morning in the Summer after this group had scaled the wooden fences of Finsbury Park to have an early morning game which lasted over 2.5hrs.
What you can't hear is the shouting, yelling and screaming that was taking place and which has awoken my partner and I for the fourth Saturday at this time on the run.
Unfortunately Finsbury Park no longer has a Park Police Unit to deal with these matters so I thought it would be helpful to collate some evidence for the park wardens to see how the situation can be managed.
We love the park, we love the space and opportunity it provides to the community and beyond to learn and enjoy sports in this area. What we don't enjoy (as residents and regular users of the park) is a small majority abusing the right to use the park with vandalism, littering and breaking into the park when it's closed. Early morning games are a great idea, just don't break into our communities beloved park to play them in a unsocialable manner and as a result, upset local residents.
