Mestre is the centre and the most populated urban area of the mainland of Venice, part of the territory of the Metropolitan City of Venice, in Veneto, northern Italy. Administratively speaking, Mestre forms (together with the nearby urban area of Carpenedo) the Municipalità di Mestre-Carpenedo, one of the six boroughs of the commune (Comune) of Venice. Sometimes considered as a frazione, it is Italy's most populated, with 89,373 inhabitants. The mainland of Venice is the territory of the city based on continental land (instead of natural or artificial islands like the most well-known parts of Venice) connected to the historical center by a long rail and road bridge over the Venetian lagoon, called Ponte della Libertà (Freedom Bridge).
Since the end of World War II, Mestre had a quick and disordered urban growth, after which Mestre constitutes a vast human settlement together with the other urban centers of the Venetian mainland (Carpenedo, Marghera, Favaro Veneto, Chirignago, Zelarino, Tessera). Mestre being the center and the most populated area of the mainland, in common language the toponym Mestre is very often used, incorrectly, to define the whole Venetian mainland. Mestre received the title of city in 1923 and maintained it briefly till 1926, when was annexed to the commune of Venice.
Public transport is managed by Azienda del Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano. There are several bus routes and two tramway lines. Several bus routes link mainland with piazzale Roma, the main bus station in Venice, via Ponte della Libertà a road bridge connecting the historical center of the city of Venice, that is a group of islands, to the mainland.
According to legends, Mestre was founded by Mesthles, a companion of the hero Antenor, a fugitive from Troy who founded Padua. The true origins of the city are uncertain, although it is known that a Roman oppidum (fortress) existed here, though this was destroyed by Attila and probably rebuilt in the 10th century. The first historical mention is from an Imperial diploma by Otto III, by which Rambald, count of Treviso, received land in the area named Mestre. In 1152 a papal bull by Pope Eugene III recognized the bishop of Treviso as lord of Mestre, citing the existence of the church of St. Lawrence, a castle and a port. In 1257 the bishops ceded it to Alberico da Romano, podestat of Treviso.
Mestre is now a preferred starting point for tourists visiting Venice, due to Mestre's favorable location, its cheap and frequent connections to the historical center of Venice by train and by bus (available also during the night), and Mestre's more reasonable prices of bars, discos, car parking, hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets, compared to the prices of the same touristic services in the historical and touristic center of Venice. The city already has some experience as host of major international basketball tournaments such as the EuroBasket 1979, which drew many tourists to the city.
Main sights :
Duomo of St. Lawrence (17th century)
Palazzo da Re
Palazzo podestarile
Provvedaria
Torre dell'Orologio (Watchtower, 1108)
Orto Botanico Locatelli, a small botanical garden

Our visit Venice travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to local Italian food, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day and by night including visiting cathedrals, canals, ruins and islands. We cover activities you won't find in a typical Venice tourism brochure, Venice itinerary or Venice, Italy city tour also known as Venezia Italia.
20 Things to do in Venice, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (VENEZIA ITALIA):
We’re taking you on a whirlwind tour of Venice in winter visiting the famed Floating City. Join us as we show you the best things to see, do and eat in Venice.
The Vaporetto is Venice’s water bus service. The standard ticket is 7.50 Euros and valid for 60 minutes, the 1 day pass is 20 Euros and valid for 24 hours.
The most visited attraction in Venice: Piazza San Marco where there is quite a bit to see and do around the square beginning with St Mark’s Basilica.
St Mark’s Campanile, a tall brick bell tower was once used by approaching ships as a beacon to guide them home where you get great views of the city.
Then you have the Doge’s Palace, which was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the ruler of the former Republic of Venice built in the Venetian Gothic style.
Don't forget the Bridge of SIghs, whose name refers to the sighs of prisoners who would get their last glimpse of Venice as they were led from Doge's Palace to their cells.
Across to the other side of the Grand Canal, you have the Basilica of Saint Mary of Health and the Galleria dell’Accademia in case you’re in the mood for art.
A restaurant we really enjoyed La Zucca - a place where all the dishes are made with pumpkin! The Rialto Market specializes in produce and fresh seafood for self-catering.
Let’s talk about island hopping in Venice:
Founded in the 5th century, Torcello is even older than Venice and was the original settlement in the Venetian Lagoon with lots of walking paths, nature and Byzantine mosaics.
Burano is known for its lace work and brightly coloured homes with plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops to browse.
Mazzorbo island sits next to Burano and is connected by a bridge while being known for its vineyards and orchards.
Murano is renowned for its glass production dating back to 1291 when the glassmakers in Venice were forced to relocate by the Venetian government.
Lido is an 11-kilometre sandbar island that shelters the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea with beaches, lots of seaside homes, and this is also where the Venice Film Festival takes place.
A restaurant we liked in Venice is Osteria Mocenigo specializing in local cuisine. Try the “Sarde in saor” - a typical Venetian dish made with sardines.
While your vaporetto pass is valid ride the canals at night and watch the Floating City come to life.
We hope you enjoyed this Venice travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas for your own trip.

Visit Venice - 5 Vital Tips for Visiting Venice, Italy
Heading to Venice on Vacation & Want a bit more insider information on this amazing island city? Here we have 5 quick tips to help travelers get the most out of visiting Venice, Italy. With over 20 million visitors a year Venice is quite popular, but let us help you figure out a few things you should know before you go to Venice.
1. Be Prepared to Get Lost: wandering the back alleys and canals is vital for enjoying Venice, Italy. However, some tourists might get a bit scared not being on a popular tourist route. Well with tons of signs and locals that know tourists get lost you won't be lost long (it is an island after all). So grab a map and still get lost enjoying those amazing hidden squares and cafes.
2. Pack Your Patience: with 20 million tourists Venice is inundated with tourists all parts of the years (especially in summer). So be prepared to wait in line for sights, wait for restauratns, fight through crowds to go over the Railto bridge etc.
3. Don't Expect The Greatest Italian Food: with all of the tourists that come not all the restaurants try their hardest. They know tons more tourists are coming the next day. So ask one of the locals for some local places to try some local food and you will be better off.
4. Dress Modestly: some of the churches will not let you in to visit their collections if you are not dressed appropriately.
5. There Is More Than Just The Venice Island in Venice: go explore some of the outlying islands like Murano where you can see the glass blowers, or visit the beaches just outside of town in the warmer months. Also, you can save a lot of money staying in Mestre instead of on the island of Venice.
